Cynthia could see that Julian was distracted, so she smiled and said, "After running around this much, I think everyone must be hungry. Let’s make something to eat on the beach."

Mohn immediately played along.

"Right, right. I really am a little hungry."

Julian nodded.

"Alright. Leave it to me. The Berries on this island just gave me ideas for two dishes that should turn out nicely."

Primarina watched Julian cook with curiosity.

She had also tasted a little of the three kinds of food earlier.

She had clearly watched him use those ingredients with her own eyes, yet the flavour of the finished meal had completely exceeded her expectations.

Although Julian was anxious, there was not the slightest change in the way he cooked.

With Combusken’s help, the two dishes were soon ready.

"Sorry for the simple meal."

Primarina received a portion as well. The more she ate, the rounder her eyes became.

How could it be this delicious?

The Primarina leader returned very quickly.

From the smile at the corner of her mouth, Julian knew she had brought back good news.

"Try these two dishes too. I made them according to human tastes, but I think you should be able to enjoy them."

The elder Primarina had interacted deeply with humans and had indeed eaten quite a few foods brought by them over the years.

With Julian’s skill, she tasted the two dishes with complete confidence.

She nodded in satisfaction.

Such rich flavour

After she tasted the two dishes, Julian took a deep breath.

Although he knew it was most likely a good result, his heart was still tense.

Using Aura to communicate with her, he asked, "How did it go? What did Tapu Fini say?"

The Primarina leader nodded.

"The three kinds of food you made tasted excellent. Lady Tapu Fini liked them very much, and she has decided to give you a chance."

"Tomorrow morning, she will create a mist that covers the entire valley in the north-east of Poni Island."

"As long as you can enter the mist and find her before sunset, she will agree to your request."

"The time is tight, and the mist will be filled with dangers. Do you have confidence?"

Julian clenched his fist.

"This is something I must do. No matter how difficult it is, I’ll try!"

"No."

"I will do it!"

A sharp light flashed through Cynthia’s eyes.

"No time to waste. We’ll investigate the north-eastern valley now."

Julian nodded.

Once the mist covered everything, it would be difficult to identify the surroundings.

If they were not familiar with the valley’s original layout, finding Tapu Fini would probably be even harder.

Sofu thumped his lower back.

"I won’t go with you. I’ll stay here and chat with Primarina."

"Mohn often runs all over Poni Island. Let him take you to Whitewater Valley."

The scientist grinned.

"Leave it to me. No one understands Poni Island better than I do!"

That was indeed the truth.

In the past, old Sofu had definitely been the person who knew Poni Island best.

Every blade of grass and every tree on Poni Island had grown under his watch.

But in recent years, as he had grown older, Sofu no longer had enough energy to patrol the whole island like he had when he was young.

Unfortunately, Julian already had his own career and love.

Otherwise, he really would have wanted to invite Julian to stay on Poni Island and become its kahuna.

The three of them rode their Pokémon to Whitewater Valley, and Mohn introduced it with a smile.

"The water in Whitewater Valley is clear and sweet. Many Pokémon like to come here to drink."

"Legend says that the source of Whitewater Valley’s water was created when Poni Island’s Pokémon fought a Pokémon that came here through an Ultra Wormhole."

"Their attacks pierced through the earth and created a spring at the source. The spring is just ahead."

Mohn pointed forward.

"I suspect that tomorrow, Tapu Fini may be waiting for you at the spring."

They arrived at the spring, and the three of them landed in front of a pool of greenish lake water.

Julian scooped up some water and tasted it.

"The taste really is excellent. Drinking this long term would be very good for a Pokémon’s body."

"Could take us around the whole of Whitewater Valley?"

Mohn nodded. As they walked, he introduced Whitewater Valley’s environment to him.

He explained where each path led, where the landmark plants and rocks were, and how to use them to identify directions.

They spent a full two hours before they finally circled the whole of the valley.

Whitewater Valley was large. Walking the entire route on foot would be very difficult.

And Tapu Fini’s mist would not be simple.

As a primitive totem deity worshipped by the tribes, the power possessed by the Tapu was difficult for Julian to imagine!

They circled once more, committing the terrain to memory.

Only then did Julian say, "That should be enough. Cynthia, we’ll set up camp at the entrance to the Valley. Tomorrow, the moment the mist appears, we’ll enter immediately!"

Cynthia nodded and smiled.

"Such an interesting trial may help Garchomp and me grow as well."

After facing Tapu Fini, Cynthia was certain her Elite Four ranking battle would go even more smoothly.

It was just...

If only Garchomp could master Headlong Rush the way Kommo-o had mastered Victory Dance...

But Cynthia knew that was impossible.

Mohn thought for a moment.

"How about... I go in with you tomorrow?"

Julian shook his head.

"There’s a good chance Tapu Fini will summon past generations of Totem Pokémon from within the mist to battle us."

"It’s too dangerous. You’ve already helped us a great deal. I don’t want to drag you into danger."

Mohn scratched his hair.

His strength was decent by ordinary standards.

But in a trial involving Tapu Fini, ancient Totem Pokémon, Garchomp, and Miraidon, "decent" was nowhere near enough.

If he wanted to take part in a trial at this level, he was still not qualified.

"Alright. I won’t go, then. No need for me to drag you down."

After he left, they began setting up camp.

During dinner, Julian looked at the bright moon near the horizon.

He hoped tomorrow’s plan would go smoothly.

Thinking of that, Julian took out his phone and called Darius.

No one picked up.

He frowned slightly and called Maylene instead.

After quite a while, Maylene finally answered.

"Hello, Brother. What’s up?"

Julian frowned.

"Why did it take so long to answer?"

Maylene laughed.

"We were lucky. As soon as we arrived, Dad became friends with Hala, the kahuna of Melemele Island."

"Hala enthusiastically introduced us to where we might find Tapu Koko. I believe we’ll gain Tapu Koko’s recognition soon!"

Julian nodded.

"Everything is going smoothly on my side too. Tomorrow, I’ll be able to take Tapu Fini’s trial. If I pass, we should be able to meet Mum."

Maylene’s face lit up with surprise.

"Really?"

"Leave it to me. I will definitely gain Tapu Fini’s recognition!"

After hanging up, Julian finally relaxed enough to enjoy dinner.

Cynthia blinked.

She felt as if she had forgotten something.

Julian placed some food into Cynthia’s bowl.

"Cynthia, try this. I think this sweet-and-sour lychee pork is the best dish tonight."

Cynthia smiled.

"Alright."

The thought that had just surfaced was immediately thrown to the back of her mind.

Looking at the entrance to the valley, Julian’s gaze grew even firmer.

Tomorrow, no matter what Pokémon stood in front of him, he would defeat them!
