Meanwhile, things were rather miserable on Caitlin’s side.
From the moment Caitlin and Darach stepped onto Akala Island, they had already been noticed by Tapu Lele.
There was no need for an island kahuna or Totem Pokémon.
Tapu Lele personally appeared in front of them.
Caitlin was rather competitive and refused to let Mewtwo or Darach make a move.
As the daughter of a wealthy family, Caitlin’s starter Pokémon was not something she went out to choose.
They were delivered to her so she could choose from them.
Although Caitlin had wanted a Gothita, the three Psychic-type Pokémon babies that had been brought to her were all so cute.
For a moment, Caitlin could not make a decision.
Gothita, Ralts, and Espurr.
Their watery eyes looked pitifully at Caitlin.
Who could bear to choose only one of them?
In the end, it was Julian who had offered a suggestion. Since Caitlin could not choose, she might as well take them all.
After all, even the annual cost of raising all three together would not use up one month of Caitlin’s allowance.
Despite only having three baby Pokémon, Caitlin seemed to have already decided she was a Psychic-type Elite Four member.
She took the three little ones and went to challenge Tapu Lele.
The result was naturally miserable.
Again and again.
The more unhappy Caitlin became, the happier Tapu Lele grew.
It was a very pleasant cycle of mutual torment.
In that short time, Caitlin’s Psychic ability underwent a transformation in quantity, quality, and control.
Darach was happy to see it happen, while Mewtwo silently observed Tapu Lele.
He discovered that Tapu Lele’s strength was likely not beneath his own right now.
When he had first been born, Mewtwo had thought the only one on his level was Mew.
Now, in Alola, he had actually encountered a Psychic-type Pokémon with strength similar to his.
Without confidence that he could definitely defeat Tapu Lele currently, Mewtwo simply allowed Caitlin to continue challenging her.
While gathering information on Tapu Lele, he meditated to strengthen his own Psychic Power.
Compared to the already mature Tapu Lele, the newly born Mewtwo believed he still had a great deal of room to grow.
After dinner, when they were already preparing to sleep, Cynthia finally remembered that they had come to Alola on Caitlin’s airship.
Cynthia looked at Julian with a slightly strange expression.
"I think we forgot to call Caitlin..."
Julian smiled.
"It’s still early. There’s still time to call her."
"Then I’ll call her once I’m inside the tent and ask how things are going."
When Caitlin received the call, she had just returned to the hotel after being beaten black and blue by Tapu Lele.
"Cynthia, that Tapu Lele is absolutely awful! I’m definitely going to beat her!"
Cynthia was also helpless.
The young Caitlin did not know her limits. Was Tapu Lele really that easy to defeat?
As she listened to Caitlin talking and talking, Cynthia fell asleep.
"Cynthia...? Cynthia! Are you there...?"
There was only silence on the other side of the phone.
"Grrrr! Just you wait!"
Tapu Lele bullied me, and now you bully me too!
Caitlin was close to crying.
Julian did not know what had happened inside Cynthia’s tent.
He closed his eyes and drifted off.
Early the next morning, Julian prepared a simple breakfast.
Once the trial began, there was no telling how intense things would become. A heavy breakfast would only weigh them down.
There were dry rations in the backpack. If they could not light a fire at noon, they would still be able to maintain their strength.
While the two were eating, the valley before their eyes was suddenly covered by thick mist.
Julian sped up his eating.
Their things could stay here. There was no need to waste time before the trial.
Cynthia soon clapped her hands.
"I’m done. Let’s move."
Julian recalled all of his Pokémon except Kommo-o and promised, "Don’t worry. Today, I’ll definitely let all of you battle to your hearts’ content!"
Cynthia also left only Garchomp out.
Not long after the two entered the valley, they heard the distant hoot of an owl.
Julian immediately activated Aura, but the mist’s resistance was strong. His Aura could not spread very far.
He could barely make out the enemies ahead.
"They’re Decidueye. And there are quite a few of them."
The Decidueye had no intention of ambushing them.
Having been pulled from the land of the dead back into reality by Tapu Fini to battle, they no longer had the competitiveness they had possessed while alive.
Five dull-coloured Decidueye stood quietly on the only path forward.
All five Decidueye were very strong, not inferior to Annihilape in his normal state.
Julian waved his hand and released Annihilape, Toxicroak, Miraidon, and Sirfetch’d.
"Cynthia, leave this battle to me."
She nodded.
The Decidueye were not strong enough yet.
Cynthia’s desire to battle was not particularly strong.
Five Pokémon faced one Decidueye spirit each.
Annihilape was the most excited. Before the fight even began, his rage was already burning.
These were ghosts.
It was Annihilape’s first time battling actual ghosts.
The Decidueye drew their bows, and shadow arrows quickly formed.
Spirit Shackle!
Their speed was extremely fast. When it came to controlling Ghost energy, spirits were far more skilled than Ghost-type Pokémon!
Of course, while their speed had increased, the power of their moves had actually dropped quite a bit compared to when they were alive.
That was the difference between having a physical body and not having one.
Annihilape swung Rage Fist, directly scattering Spirit Shackle.
His fury burned even brighter, and he rushed up to unleash a flurry of punches.
The Decidueye cried out miserably and slipped into the mist, disappearing.
Annihilape looked at his fists.
Were his punches really that powerful?
Ghosts really were less durable than Pokémon.
Sirfetch’d’s Throat Chop likewise sent a Decidueye spirit flying.
Kommo-o tried using the Clanging Scales he had just learned. Its power was impressive.
It was just that it lowered his defence.
Kommo-o planned to overcome the side effect of Clanging Scales through training.
Toxicroak opened with Sucker Punch. His movements were refined, and his speed was blistering.
Those thousand basic palm thrusts every day had not been practised for nothing.
Seeing that his teammates had all finished, Miraidon immediately used Wild Charge.
He knocked the final Decidueye into the mist.
And everything happening here was being watched clearly by Tapu Fini through a water mirror.
Julian’s strength was already no worse than many island kahunas.
If Tapu Fini wanted to stop Julian from reaching her, she needed to summon even stronger warriors!
The two continued forward.
A huge Garchomp appeared before them.
Cynthia became extremely excited.
"I’ll take this one! I didn’t expect Alola to have a Totem Garchomp!"
"Garchomp, Dragon Dance!"
Totem Garchomp had spent who knew how many years in the spirit world, his eyes cold and dull.
But when he saw Cynthia’s Garchomp dancing before him...
Shock and envy quickly appeared in Totem Garchomp’s eyes.
We’re both Garchomp
How did you learn Dragon Dance?
Totem Garchomp had even become a Totem, yet he still did not know it.
Did knowing Dragon Dance make you so great?
He had to give this little brother some care from a senior.
Very quickly, Totem Garchomp was sent flying.
Cynthia smiled slightly.
Sorry.
Knowing Dragon Dance really was amazing.
Even Tapu Fini was somewhat surprised.
She had originally thought Julian was already strong enough.
She had not expected there to be someone even stronger!
Fortunately, Tapu Fini still had a trump card she had not used.
