Our Anniversary, You Chose Her – I Chose Divorce
Chapter 894 It Is an Overt Scheme
But he was actually lying to her. He had been lying to her all along...
Anger welled up from the depths of her heart, her expression growing increasingly cold. She remembered the deal they had struck—she had agreed to stay by his side only because he promised to help her find Iris.
"Liar! What a massive liar!" she thought.
Iris was her best friend. She had helplessly watched Iris being taken away to be with a lunatic. She had worried day and night, eventually reaching a point where she didn’t even dare to imagine what Iris might be going through.
But it turned out that he had known everything all along!
Flames of fury surged in her eyes. Chloe Reed tried her hardest to rein in her emotions. After enduring so much, she had become adept at controlling her feelings, and in just a few moments, she forced her anger down.
She analyzed the situation rationally before looking at Nathaniel Monroe. "William Quinn told you this willingly? What is he playing at? Is he trying to drive a wedge between us?"
Nathaniel’s mouth twitched into a bitter smile. "It’s an overt plot. He absolutely wants to drive a wedge, and quite obviously, he has succeeded."
His gaze grew cold. He had always wanted to rescue Iris, but what had Walker Grant said? Walker had constantly stopped him, using Nathaniel’s inadequate physical condition as an excuse to make him stay in the country for training.
But what was the result?
Walker knew Iris’s whereabouts from the very beginning! He had used Iris as a bargaining chip in his dealings with William Quinn! With Iris in hand, given William’s utter obsession with her, what deal couldn’t be struck?
"Hah!" Nathaniel felt a mix of agony and rage, realizing he had placed his trust in the wrong person. He gripped the steering wheel tightly. "Chloe, I came back this time to confront him and ask him exactly why he did this. My methods might not be very civilized, so you had better prepare yourself."
He paused before adding, "I’m telling you this because I don’t want you to be kept in the dark anymore."
"I know." Chloe lowered her eyes slightly, her voice hoarse. "We both care about Iris."
Nathaniel’s eyes looked a bit unfocused. "I truly regret it. If only I had confessed my feelings to her earlier, she might never have had to endure any of this."
Her life used to be so ordinary. She had lived a simple, monotonous routine, occasionally meeting up with Chloe to hang out. But she could never return to that peaceful life again. She was being kept by William as if she were a pet. She had lost her freedom, her family, and her friends. Now, her world was forced to revolve entirely around William.
Chloe turned to look out the window. She reached up to wipe away a stray tear from the corner of her eye, took a deep breath, and said, "I’m going to head out."
Nathaniel nodded in acknowledgment. "Chloe, my return is a secret. You’re the only one who knows, so please don’t tell anyone else for now."
"Okay."
Chloe stepped out of the vehicle, hailed a passing taxi, and left.
Nathaniel watched her leave, exhaling a long, heavy breath. A hint of hatred toward Walker surfaced in his eyes.
He thought, "Walker, the absolute last thing you should have done was hide this from me and disregard Iris’s life. Everything happening to you now is simply your karma."
Once inside the taxi, Chloe finally felt her phone vibrating. She pulled it out and saw it was a call from Daniel Hayes.
"Hello, Daniel," Chloe said as she answered.
Daniel’s tone was extremely serious. "Chloe, what just happened? What was the deal with that car?"
"It suddenly broke down, so I got out," Chloe replied.
"Then why were you in there for so long?" Daniel asked, his confusion evident. "I thought you were in danger."
