Chapter 341: Shadow Trials[24]

?Samantha pulled her terminal from her belt with her free hand.

Her eyes swept over the incoming priority messages. A coded data burst from Team Gamma was flashing across her screen—a frantic, compressed packet bearing Xander’s personal signature.

?[SAMANTHA: REROUTE KEYSTONE TELEMETRY VIA SECTOR FIVE RELAY IMMEDIATELY. WE NEED DUAL-NODE SYNC AT THE CROWN TERMINAL OR WE LOSE THE TRIAL.]

?Cassius peered over her shoulder, his thick dreadlocks swaying.

"Are you insane? If we reroute the Keystone to the Citadel, every team between here and the central plaza will see our data path. They’ll know exactly where the artifact’s verification anchor is!"

?"If we don’t reroute it," Samantha said, her voice dropping into a flat, absolute register, "Xander fails at the door, Lucian takes the Citadel, and our entire second-place standing evaporates. We aren’t just defending a box, Cassius. We’re keeping the board alive."

?Samantha’s thumb hovered over the transmit icon. She looked toward the southern service tunnel, where the sound of approaching footsteps echoed off the concrete walls.

?"Do it," Cassius growled, stepping in front of the console to form a human shield.

"I’ll watch the door."

?Samantha tapped the screen.

?[DATA STREAM REROUTED: KEYSTONE TELEMETRY DIRECTED TO CITADEL TERMINAL GAMMA]

?Up in the VIP observation deck, Jax Sterling leaped out of his seat, his hands slamming onto the console edge.

?"Did she just—?" Jax stammered, pointing a finger at the holographic tracking map.

"Samantha just broadcast the Keystone’s live verification stream straight to Xander’s terminal at the Citadel! She’s handing him the dual-node sync right out in the open for every rival team to track!"

?Nadia Varas leaned forward, her silver-grey eyes wide with sudden, sharp appreciation.

"It’s not a gift, Jax. It’s a calculated gamble. She knows Team Beta can’t hold the transit hub against three converging squads. By transferring the verification anchor to Xander, she shifts the target off her own back and forces Lucian to split his attention between defending the plaza and intercepting a live data transfer."

?"Oh, the strategy is brilliant," Jax groaned, though a broad grin was spreading across his face.

"The assassins are playing four-dimensional chess while poor Cassius is down there getting his ribs rearranged by kinetic hammers!"

?Back at the Citadel entrance, the terminal interface before Xander suddenly flared with a brilliant, blinding wash of blue light.

?[KEYSTONE DATA RECEIVED AND VERIFIED]

[DUAL-NODE SYNCHRONIZATION: COMPLETE]

[CROWN ACCESS UNLOCKED: ALL RESTRICTIONS LIFTED]

?A deep, resonant chime echoed across the central plaza as the massive bronze-and-glass doors of the Citadel slid completely open, revealing the cavernous, amber-lit interior of the inner sanctum where the Crown rested upon its basalt pedestal.

?"The doors are open!" Warren shouted, his arms trembling as he maintained a sweeping wall of swirling air that kept Lucian Ash pinned behind a stone planter twenty feet away.

"Xander, grab the relic!"

?"I don’t need to grab it," Xander called back, his fingers flying across the console as he initiated the final registration sequence.

"The system just needs the physical presence of a Team Gamma representative inside the threshold to log the primary objective completion. Warren, cover the door! Edmund, get inside!"

?Edmund didn’t hesitate.

Ignoring the sharp, tearing agony in his injured thigh, he limped past Xander through the threshold, stepping into the amber glow of the inner sanctum.

He raised his hand toward the basalt pedestal, channeling a controlled, stabilizing frost current around the Crown’s housing to lock its verification signature into the academy’s main database.

?[CROWN SECURED: TEAM GAMMA]

[POINTS AWARDED: +200]

?The giant holographic standings hovering above the Bastion flickered instantly, the numbers shifting with the violent speed of an avalanche:

Lucian Ash stopped moving.

?He stood behind the stone planter, his dark Umbralis-infused dagger resting loosely at his side. He stared up at the massive holographic leaderboard floating against the afternoon sky, watching Xander Gray’s name lock firmly into first place with 515 cumulative points.

?The plaza fell into a sudden, eerie silence, broken only by the hum of the cooling terminal and the heavy breathing of Warren and Edmund.

?Lucian slowly sheathed his weapon, his dark eyes shifting from the glowing board down to Xander, who stood leaning against the Citadel terminal with a quiet, exhausted smile.

?"You traded information with Jonas, you manipulated Kaelen into corrupting Team Alpha’s data feed, you forced Samantha into a live telemetry sync, and you used Warren as a human battering ram," Lucian said, his voice entirely even, carrying no trace of bitterness—only a cold, razor-sharp acknowledgment of reality.

It’s not about being stronger, Lucian," Xander replied softly, straightening his dust-stained collar.

"It’s about knowing whose pieces are willing to move."

?High above the Bastion, the automated system chime rang out across the entire academy grounds, signaling the official end of Trial Four: The Broken Covenant.

?Headmaster Gregory Whizen’s authoritative voice echoed from the central speakers:

?[SHADOW TRIALS: CONCLUDED]

[ALL CONTESTANTS RETURN TO THE CENTRAL AMPHITHEATER FOR FINAL PLACEMENT VERIFICATION]

?Across the training complex, the holographic streets began to dissolve back into quiet concrete shells.

Automated extraction portals hissed open, venting gray operational steam as the twenty-four exhausted contestants began making their way back toward the central briefing hall.

?In the Sector Seven transit hub, Cassius leaned against a shattered terminal, panting heavily as he wiped a streak of blood from his forehead, while Samantha secured her spear in its harness, her dark eyes reflecting the fading amber light of the simulation grid.

?In the central plaza, Warren helped Edmund down the Citadel steps, the two Talented sharing a silent, grudging nod of mutual respect that bridged the deep political divide of their respective houses.

?And up in the VIP observation deck, Jax Sterling let out a long, theatrical sigh, sinking back into his chair with a broad grin.

?"Well, Nadia," Jax chuckled.

"The academy wanted a test of leadership, cooperation, and judgment under uncertainty. I’d say Master Gray gave them quite a show."

?Nadia Varas adjusted the brim of her black baseball cap, her silver-grey eyes fixed on the retreating figures of the finalists below. She watched Samantha walk alongside Cassius, and she watched Xander lead Warren and Edmund away from the Citadel doors.

?"He passed the trial, Jax," Nadia said quietly, her voice carrying a deep, understated gravity. "But the Bastion has walls and rules.

"The Masquerade Ball tonight... that’s where the real game begins."

?A few minutes later, inside the grand amphitheater of Pyreptar Academy, the final standings were locked in bronze text across the central wall.

Headmaster Gregory Whizen stood at the central podium, flanked by representatives of the Great Houses.

The mandatory representation quotas had been successfully met: three Talented contestants—Samantha, Warren, and Edmund—sat firmly within the overall top five, securing their eligibility for the upcoming Veilrend Games alongside the top-ranking assassins.

?"The Shadow Trials are officially closed," Headmaster Whizen announced, his voice carrying the full weight of the institution. "You have proved your resilience, your tactical intelligence, and your adaptability. Tonight, you celebrate. Tomorrow, you prepare for the Veilrend Games."

As the amphitheater lights dimmed and the contestants dispersed toward their dormitories to exchange their dust-stained combat gear for formal evening attire, the atmosphere in the academy shifted.

?The combat phase was over.

?Across the northern and southern wings, heavy wooden doors swung open to reveal polished marble ballrooms hung with deep crimson draperies and glittering crystal chandeliers.

Servants delivered formal engraved invitations to every dormitory room, bearing the seals of the Great Houses and the academy board.

?In her private quarters, Samantha stood before her long mirror, sliding her locked armory chest closed over the spear.

On her mahogany desk rested a heavy, silver-embossed envelope—her formal invitation to the Masquerade Ball.

?She picked it up, her fingers tracing the cold metal crest.

?The trials had tested who could survive a structured war.

The masquerade ball would test who could survive a room full of people who had learned to hide their intentions behind a mask.

?Across the academy dormitories, the transition from tactical discipline to social maneuvering was already underway.

In the quiet sanctuary of the assassins’ wing, Lucian Ash unfastened the clasps of his combat suit, letting the weighted leather drop onto the polished hardwood floor with a dull, heavy thud.

He walked over to the washbasin, splashed cold water over his face, and reached for the pristine, formal suit laid out across his bed. He had finished second—behind Xander Gray by a margin of twenty points.

Yet, as Lucian fastened the silver brooches at his throat, his expression held no trace of bitterness.

He had spent the afternoon replaying the final sequence of the trial, tracing every node of Xander’s information network.

It was not a defeat born of inferior combat ability, but of a wider strategic visibility. Lucian recognized that the Masquerade Ball offered an entirely different theater of operations—one where wealth, lineage, and carefully whispered alliances would carry far more weight than an umbralis-infused blade.
