Chapter 340: Shadow Trial[23]

  • Next Chapter

Outside the Citadel’s sunlit, soaring stone portico, the air hung thick with the scent of ozone and the deep, resonant hum of the academy’s automated verification systems.

Xander, Warren, and Edmund stumbled out from the narrow service maintenance hatch, gasping for clean air as the bright daylight of the central plaza hit them.

Edmund pressed a hand against his bleeding thigh, his face pale from the exertion, but his ice Talent was already sealing the minor tear in his uniform.

"We’re inside the inner perimeter," Warren said, his eyes scanning the massive dual doors of the Citadel looming a few feet ahead.

"There are no security patrols visible. But Lucian is right behind us. If he locked the sub-level behind us, he’s taking the surface service lift."

"Then we don’t have minutes," Xander said, stepping up to the towering bronze-and-glass portal that formed the main entrance of the Citadel.

He pulled the decrypted data drive he had taken from Kaelen’s sequence out of his pocket, along with the secondary access codes he had bartered from Jonas.

"Edmund," Xander said without looking back, his fingers already flying across the encrypted terminal port built into the Citadel’s stone frame.

"You have the thermal stabilization protocol ready?"

Edmund stepped up to his left flank, his palms igniting with a steady, pale blue aura.

"Ready. If the system triggers a defensive feedback loop when you input the corrupted data packet, I’ll freeze the circuit board before the shock reaches your terminal."

"And Warren?" Xander asked quietly.

"I’m watching the plaza approach," Warren replied, his elemental affinities humming in a dense, quiet resonance as he faced the open plaza behind them.

"If Lucian steps out of that service lift, he has to cross only a short distance of open stone before he reaches this portico. He won’t take a single uncontested step."

Xander smiled—a sharp, quiet expression of pure, unfiltered focus.

He slotted the data drive into the terminal port.

"Come on," Xander whispered, tapping the final override sequence.

"Complete the circuit."

The massive seals of the Citadel doors hissed, their heavy bronze panels trembling as the automated verification bar ticked from amber to brilliant, unyielding green.

[CROWN ACCESS VERIFIED: TEAM GAMMA]

As the grand doors began to slide inward, revealing the vast, darkened hall of the inner sanctum where the Crown rested upon its pedestal, the sound of a lone set of boots echoed sharply across the stone plaza behind them.

Warren turned his gaze in the direction of the footfalls.

Standing a few feet away at the edge of the open plaza, Lucian Ash stood motionless, his dark dagger resting loosely at his side, watching them with an expression of quiet, unwavering determination.

The trial wasn’t over yet.

*****

Lucian remained still. His dark eyes tracked the movement of Team Gamma with a precision that bordered on absolute certainty.

He knew Xander had not triggered the Citadel’s access just to stand in a doorway. He knew there was a secondary mechanism at play—a hidden cost or a dependent verification loop that required Team Gamma to hold the threshold while the system processed the data.

?"He’s stalling," Lucian murmured quietly to himself.

?Across the open plaza, Warren Frost sensed the shift in Lucian’s weight. Warren’s eyes narrowed, shining with an eerie glow, his quadra-elemental affinities hummed with a dense, silent resonance.

With a flick of his wrist and a sharp expulsion of breath, Warren channeled a controlled Gale Anchor downward, shearing the surface of the stone plaza and sending a violent, razor-sharp crescent of compressed air.

With uncanny precision, the air sliced through the sir like a scythe pushing directly toward Lucian’s feet.

?The wind blade tore across the paving stones with a screech of fracturing granite, throwing up a cloud of white dust.

Dipping his torso to the right, he let the compressed airflow hiss harmlessly past his left shoulder.

As his body dropped, his left foot found purchase on a protruding block of stone, and he surged forward in a low, blurring rush, closing half the distance in a single heartbeat.

?"Edmund!" Warren shouted, his hands shifting from air to earth as he slammed his palms against the ground to raise a jagged masonry barrier.

?Edmund stood a few paces back, his face pale, his breath coming in shallow gasps.

The deep tear in his academy trousers, sustained during the parking deck escape, was caked in dried blood where his ice Talent had only partially succeeded in freezing the underlying tissue.

Every shift of his weight sent a fresh wave of fire shooting up his thigh.

Yet, despite the pain, his concentration remained razor-sharp.

?As Lucian cleared Warren’s earth wall with a fluid vault, Edmund swept his left arm through the air.

?FROST ANCHOR.

A sheet of slick, blue ice crystallized across the open flagstones directly in Lucian’s landing zone.

?Lucian’s boots touched the frozen surface, and for a fraction of a second, his momentum betrayed him.

His right foot slipped outward. Any lesser assasin would have gone down, but Lucian’s core control was absolute. He threw his weight backward, plunging his umbralis-infused dagger an inch deep into a masonry crack to arrest his slide, pivoting on his knee while a sheet of Edmund’s ice shattered against his shin guard.

?"Impressive, Edmund," Lucian said, his voice entirely steady as he wrenched his dagger free and surged back to his feet.

"Your ice is getting faster. But you’re bleeding on the floor. How much longer can you maintain that anchor before your leg gives out?"

?Edmund didn’t bother to answer.

He simply gritted his teeth, his pale blue eyes burning with cold defiance as he gathered the remaining moisture in the air to form a dense, hovering wall of ice shards at his flank.

?Meanwhile, at the terminal port embedded in the Citadel’s stone frame, Xander Gray’s fingers were a blur of motion.

?The system display flashed amber, then green, then amber again.

[WARNING: MULTI-RELIC RECONCILIATION REQUIRED FOR FINAL CROWN LOCK]

?Xander’s heart hammered against his ribs.

The decrypted data drive from Kaelen’s sequence had successfully bypassed the primary firewall, and Jonas’s access codes had cleared the regional routing filters.

But the terminal’s prompt was flashing an unexpected constraint:

[ Multi-Relic Reconciliation Required.]

?The system wasn’t just asking for the Crown. It was demanding that Team Gamma verify a second Covenant Relic—either the Cipher or the Keystone—simultaneously within a ninety-second synchronization window, or the Citadel doors would automatically re-seal, locking them out permanently.

?"Kaelen’s sabotage," Xander realized with a sudden, chilling clarity.

By corrupting the data stream in Sector Four, he didn’t just split Team Alpha’s intelligence—he forced the system to require a dual-node sync.

"To claim the Crown, we have to prove we control a second relic right now..."

?Xander glanced over his shoulder.

Warren and Edmund were holding the line against Lucian, but Lucian was systematically dismantling their spacing, forcing Warren to spend his elemental energy on containment rather than offense, while Edmund’s injured leg was visibly trembling under the strain of his ice anchors.

"Bloody..."

?And Samantha and Cassius were at the transit hub, holding the Keystone—far out of reach.

?"Or are they? Xander’s eyes narrowed as his fingers danced across the terminal port, pulling up the Bastion’s live grid.

*****

?Two miles away, inside the reinforced concrete bunker of the Sector Seven transit hub, the air smelled of scorched rubber and ozone.

Samantha stood with her boots braced against the control console, her hands locked firmly around the shaft of her spear.

The dark, lusterless mineral shaft thrummed with a deep, liquid shadow that seemed to swallow the flickering emergency lights overhead.

?Across the shattered intake doors of the hub, three members of Team Delta—led by an aggressive mid-tier Talented wielding a kinetic hammer—were launching a desperate, coordinated assault to pry the Keystone from its automated mounting bracket.

?"She’s holding the terminal!" the kinetic Talented roared, bringing his heavy hammer down in a devastating overhead arc aimed at Samantha’s position.

Without flinching, Samantha stepped forward, bringing the spear up in a clean block.

The spear’s core absorbed the kinetic shockwave entirely, the mineral shaft pulsing once with a deep, consuming blackness that instantly sucked the momentum out of the heavy swing.

The Talented stumbled forward, thrown completely off balance by the unexpected lack of resistance.

?"Cassius! Now!" Samantha called out.

?Cassius didn’t need to be told twice. His skin shimmering with the dense, bronze hide of his A-2 Biological Talent, he lunged forward, his massive shoulder driving squarely into the Talented’s chest and sending him crashing through a bank of automated control terminals in a shower of sparks and shattered plastic.

?"That’s two down!" Cassius grunted, his breath heaving as he stood over the downed student.

"But we’ve got more coming down the southern service tunnel. Samantha, we can’t hold this checkpoint indefinitely. The whole Bastion knows we have the Keystone!"

"And that’s all the more reason to plan our next move carefully."
