Chapter 339: Shadow Trials[22]

A tense silence filled the air.

Warren’s expression hardened. "Then we don’t go around. We break through."

Before Xander could interject, Warren silently stepped out from the shadow of the pillar.

His elemental affinities surged through his frame with terrifying, silent efficiency, channeling his signature Gale Anchor through the air currents of the hallway.

A concentrated vortex of compressed, high-velocity wind erupted from Warren’s outstretched palm, tearing across the open floorboards with the force of a localized storm.

An optical camo field shimmering near the stairwell shattered instantly under the impact.

Two Team Alpha operatives materialized out of the distortion, their daggers raised as they were violently thrown back against the reinforced concrete wall by the compressed shockwave.

"Now, Edmund!" Warren barked.

Edmund didn’t hesitate. He swept his arm across the floor, executing a precise, lightning-fast Frost Anchor.

Thick, jagged spikes of blue ice erupted from the tile, encasing the operatives’ boots and lower legs, pinning them fast to the ground before they could recover their footing.

"Clean," Xander muttered, sprinting past the pinned operatives toward the stairwell door.

"Now let’s move before Lucian realizes his welcoming committee has been grounded."

They descended three flights of concrete stairs into the dim, subterranean sprawl of the parking deck.

Rows of simulated electric vehicles sat abandoned beneath flickering fluorescent tubes that hummed with a high-pitched, abrasive whine.

The air here was colder, thick with stale exhaust and damp earth.

As they reached the far exit bulkhead—the final passage leading out to the Citadel’s western portico—Xander stepped up to the automated terminal mounted beside the reinforced steel door.

He pulled out his terminal, preparing to input the override codes.

Instead of lighting up with an authorization text, a harsh, crimson warning banner flashed across the glass:

[ACCESS DENIED: MANUAL OVERRIDE ENGAGED FROM PRIMARY NODE]

[WARNING: SECTOR SEAL INITIATED]

Edmund froze, his eyes darting to the heavy overhead steel bulkhead as it began to drop with a slow, grinding mechanical groan.

"A remote lock-out. Lucian anticipated we’d take the parking deck."

"He didn’t just anticipate it," Xander said, his playful composure finally cracking into sharp, urgent focus as he looked up toward the ceiling ventilation grates.

"He’s watching us."

From the shadows above, a single figure dropped silently onto the concrete floor ten paces away.

Lucian Ash stood amidst the drifting dust, his dark umbralis-infused dagger catching the harsh red glow of the warning lights.

His posture was balanced, his dark eyes completely calm as they locked onto Xander.

"End of the line, Xander," Lucian said quietly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.

"You can manipulate the data streams, you can buy off junior assassins, and you can outmaneuver Kaelen Sorel. But not me. This is where it ends."

Warren stepped forward, his elemental affinities flaring around his hands in a silent, crackling aura, while Edmund moved to his flank, his palms glowing with pale, freezing mist.

Xander raised a hand, motioning for his allies to hold their positions. He looked at Lucian, then up at the descending steel bulkhead that was now halfway closed, cutting off their primary exit.

The margin for error had evaporated.

The alliance was holding by a thread; Lucian had closed the trap precisely as planned, and the Crown was sitting less than a hundred yards away behind a sealed administrative door.

Xander’s dark eyes flashed with a sudden, dangerous intensity.

Without stepping back, he smiled—a fierce, calculating smile of a competitor who had just realized the board was entirely open.

"Lucian," Xander called out, his voice cutting cleanly through the grinding roar of the closing bulkhead. "You’re entirely right about most of those things. But you forgot one tiny, insignificant detail."

Lucian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "And what is that?"

"I don’t need to open the door," Xander said, stepping sideways

"I just need you to look the other way while Warren blows the foundation."

The grinding groan of the descending steel bulkhead slowed, its serrated lower edge halting six feet above the scratched concrete floor.

The emergency red lights painted long, angular streaks across the dust motes spinning in the stale subterranean air.

Lucian did not turn his head toward the ceiling, refusing to waver. His boots remained anchored, his weight balanced forward on the balls of his feet, the dark, umbralis-infused dagger in his hand catching the harsh crimson glare.

He knew better than to take an opponent’s bluff at face value, especially an opponent who had spent the last hour manipulating every pawn on this current elaborate chessboard.

"Blowing the foundation, Xander?" Lucian’s voice cut through the ambient whine of the ventilation fans with unhurried coldness.

"We have four floors of reinforced steel and concrete above us. If Warren blows a hole here, the ceiling comes down on all four of us. The academy’s safety protocols might prevent lethal crushing, but it will trigger an immediate disqualification."

"Who said anything about blowing up anything?" Xander replied smoothly, his feet shifting to the left.

Warren didn’t wait for permission or further debate. His dark eyes narrowed.

A moment later, they ignited with dark light, his affinities flaring with silent, lethal precision. He stepped forward, his palm hovering inches above the floor near the base of the concrete bulkhead where the primary automated lock housing was embedded.

He channeled a Gale Anchor downward, driving a thin, highly compressed lance of air directly into the expansion gap of the housing.

A jet of high-pressure fluid vented instantly into the parking deck, white mist spraying outward as the locking pin shrieked under the forced load.

Lucian had already anticipated the diversion the second Warren shifted his stance.

Utilizing his assassin training, Lucian burst forward in a low, blurring rush, crossing the distance in a blur of motion.

"Not so fast," Edmund Brewer barked.

He slammed his palm downward onto the concrete between them, executing a rapid Frost Anchor.

A wall of jagged, dense blue ice erupted upward from a floor seam, shooting directly into Lucian’s path.

Without missing a beat, he dipped his shoulder, sliding sideways across the slick surface of the newly formed ice sheet, using his momentum to carry him past the barrier while his dagger swept out in a low, horizontal arc aimed at Edmund’s thigh.

Edmund twisted his torso backward, the dark blade shearing through the fabric of his gear and drawing a thin line of warmth against his skin.

But that was all the delay that Warren needed.

With a sharp, cracking sound, the housing on the bulkhead gave way under the combined pressure of Warren’s compressed air current and the automated release.

The heavy steel door dropped the remaining six feet with a deafening slam, hitting the floor and sealing off the parking deck from the outside portico—but not before Warren’s controlled blast blew a jagged fracture through the concrete.

"The seal is broken!" Warren shouted, his breath coming in sharp gasps as he channeled a gust of wind to clear the concrete dust.

"Move, move, move!" Xander ordered, dropping the playful facade entirely.

Xander didn’t wait to see if Lucian would recover his footing.

He hooked his arm through the fracture, using his slender frame and agility to squeeze through the narrow gap.

Edmund followed instantly, sliding low through the dust and shards of masonry, while Warren covered their retreat, unleashing a sweeping wall of swirling air that kicked up a blinding screen of grey debris across the parking deck floor.

When the dust settled, Lucian stood alone in the dim crimson glow of the subterranean garage.

His dark eyes tracked the space near the fractured bulkhead.

He didn’t pursue them blindly through the narrow gap. Instead, his gaze dropped to the floor, where Xander had left behind a small, discarded decoy terminal blinking a mocking amber light.

Lucian crushed the decoy beneath his heel, his expression remaining impassive. He tapped his comm unit.

"Team Alpha operatives," Lucian’s voice was cold and entirely steady.

"They’ve breached the western. They’re heading into the inner portico approach. Drop the containment shutters at the checkpoint. Let’s see how fast they run when the entire inner ring starts closing in."

Up in the VIP observation deck, Jax Sterling slammed both hands down on the control console, a loud whistle escaping his lips.

"Did you see that?" Jax laughed, shaking his head. "Warren cracks the housing, Edmund takes a blade to the thigh to buy a quarter-second, and Xander slides through a hole the size of a dinner plate like a greased otter!"

Nadia Varas crossed her arms, her grey eyes fixed intently on the sector map where Team Gamma’s blue indicator light had just reappeared inside the inner ring of the Citadel.

"It worked because Lucian had to choose between stopping Warren’s breach and stopping Xander," Nadia noted, her voice analytical and sharp.

"If Lucian had ignored any of them, Warren would have blown the entire access seal wide open. If he committed to stopping Warren, Edmund and Xander exploited the gap. Lucian made the correct choice under pressure, but Xander engineered a scenario where every correct choice cost him precious time."

"And time is an eternity when you’re racing toward the Crown," Jax grinned, leaning back.

"Look at the board. Lucian is still holding the lead overall, but Team Gamma just bypassed the final choke point. The race for the Citadel door is officially down to the wire."
