Nightblade (Darkest night)
Chapter 342: Masquerade Ball
The Masquerade Ball of Pyreptar Academy occupied the grand West Wing ballroom—a cavernous hall where history and architecture bowed to the ambitions of the Great Houses.
Towering marble pillars, veined in pale obsidian and deep lapis lazuli, rose to meet a vaulted ceiling painted with star charts that shimmered under the shifting light of four colossal crystal chandeliers.
Deep crimson draperies framed the tall arched windows, and a live orchestra positioned upon a raised dais filled the cool, vaulted air with an undulating, measured waltz.
Servants in black-and-silver livery moved silently across the polished parquet floor, carrying silver trays laden with chilled fruit nectars and sparkling crystal flutes.
?Outside, in the quieter corridors leading to the ballroom, the personal negotiations were already taking shape.
?Edmund found Emily standing near the tall arched windows of the eastern gallery, watching the dusk settle over the academy courtyards.
The pale light caught the fine, silvery threads of her gown and the delicate silver filigree of the mask resting in her hand.
She had spent the afternoon studying the final reports of the Shadow Trials.
?Edmund approached with a measured stride, his boots making almost no sound against the thick runner carpet. He did not wear the stiff, defensive posture that had defined his early days at Pyreptar; his victory in securing fifth place overall and the respect of his peers had settled his frame into something more composed.
?"Emily," he said, his voice quiet, carrying a formal cadence.
?She turned, her green eyes meeting his with a calm, appraising stillness.
"Edmund. I thought you would be resting your leg."
?"It’s nothing my ice Talent couldn’t stabilize," Edmund replied, stopping a respectful distance away. He looked down at the polished floor for a fraction of a second before lifting his gaze back to her face.
"The academy is hosting the Masquerade Ball tonight. The Great Houses will be observing, and the faculty expects us to represent our respective affiliations. But... I was hoping you might attend not as Headmaster Whizen’s daughter, or as a Talented studying under Merlin Hale Crest, but with me."
?Emily studied him for a long moment, the quiet intelligence behind her expression unreadable.
She knew the political weight attached to House Brewer, especially after the turbulence surrounding her and the recent security breaches.
Yet she also knew Edmund—his discipline, his refusal to yield and his quiet loyalty to those who earned his trust.
?A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of her lips.
"I would find that acceptable, Edmund. Provided you promise not to spend the entire evening analyzing the rest of the Talented families for the rest of the evening."
?"Only if you promise not to read my fortune before the first dance," Edmund replied, a rare, genuine trace of dry humor warming his voice.
?As the evening deepened, the ballroom began to fill with the academy’s elite.
?The first notable arrivals drew the immediate attention of the student body and the visiting dignitaries. Cassius Wulfric strode through the grand double doors, his broad shoulders easily parting the sea of tailored velvet and silk.
Gone was the combat-worn tactical gear of the Bastion; tonight, he wore a sharp charcoal coat with silver piping that emphasized his commanding physical presence.
Beside him walked Kelia. Her gown of deep emerald silk moved with a fluid, effortless grace, and her silver mask—shaped like the delicate wings of a nocturnal bird—partially concealed her face, leaving only her sharp, perceptive eyes visible.
?Cassius offered a brief, good-natured nod to several junior contestants who hastily stepped aside, his hand resting lightly near Kelia’s elbow as they navigated the polished floor toward the VIP seating area.
?Following close behind them came Anthony Grant and Amanda Gardner.
Amanda’s arrival caused a distinct ripple of murmurs among the younger Talented students.
Known for her A-4 Lightning classification and her mastery of wind-based flight applications, she moved with an absolute, floating lightness that seemed to defy the heavy atmosphere of the room.
Her gown, spun from a pale, luminescent fabric that caught the chandelier light like static electricity, was complemented by
Anthony’s tailored black suit and understated silver mask. They did not linger for long in at the entrance, slipping quietly into the quieter periphery where the representatives of the Gardner family sat observing the room.
?Near the western arched entrance, Xander Gray stood leaning against a marble pillar, his silver stylus once again twirling between his fingers. He had won Trial Four, securing 515 cumulative points and taking first place overall, yet his demeanor remained just as casual as before.
When Gloria Gracian stepped out from the private receiving alcove, Xander pushed off the pillar and walked over to her.
Gloria wore a gown of midnight blue brocade that shimmered like deep water, her hair arranged in an intricate sweep beneath a porcelain mask etched with delicate gold leaf.
As a student council member from House Gracian, her social standing was unimpeachable, and her presence beside the Bastion’s ultimate victor instantly drew the eyes of half the room.
?"You’re cutting it close, Gray," Gloria said, her voice dry and laced with amusement as she looked up at him.
"Most people who manage to outmaneuver twenty-four assassins and Talented arrive with at least a veneer of exhausted triumph. You look like you’ve just walked out of a particularly pleasant library."
?"Triumphs are terribly overrated, Gloria," Xander smiled, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners. " Besides, I wanted to ensure I was adequately dressed before asking the most discerning member of the Student Council to dance."
?Gloria raised an eyebrow behind her golden mask.
"And here I thought your only talent was trading stolen data packets and convincing junior assassins to walk into walls."
?"Those were merely extracurriculars," Xander replied smoothly, offering his arm with a formal, mock-chivalrous bow.
"Tonight’s curriculum is entirely social. Shall we?"
?With a light, skeptical laugh, Gloria accepted his arm, and together they stepped past the towering obsidian pillars into the center of the ballroom, their arrival immediately triggering a fresh wave of hushed commentary among the gathered students.
?On the opposite side of the hall, near the southern balcony doors that opened out onto the moonlit stone terraces, Warren Frost stood waiting.
He wore a high-collared coat of deep plum velvet, his silver-grey eyes scanning the crowd with steady focus until he saw Samantha Drake approaching.
?Samantha wore a structured gown of obsidian-black silk that fell in clean, severe lines, entirely devoid of excessive ornamentation. Her dark mask was forged from a matte metal that absorbed the light, matching the austere, uncompromising elegance of her presence.
?Warren stepped forward, his expression softening slightly as he met her gaze.
"You made it."
?"Of course I made it, Warren," Samantha said, a faint, dry note in her voice.
"The academy doesn’t award extra credits for skipping formal functions, though I suspect Cassius would have paid a high price to try."
?"Cassius is currently trying to determine whether the buffet service includes roasted meats or merely decorative garnish," Warren observed, a corner of his mouth lifting in a brief smile.
He held out his hand, his fingers steady.
"The orchestra is playing something reasonably tolerable. Would you care to step away from the Great House delegations for a few minutes?"
?Samantha looked at his extended hand, then up into his eyes.
The trials had forced them into competition, temporary alliance, and unspoken understanding. The noise of the ballroom, the whispers of the visiting dignitaries, and the heavy political machinery of Pyreptar Academy seemed to recede for a heartbeat.
?"All right, Warren," she said quietly, placing her hand in his. "Show me the terrace."
As Warren led her through the crimson draperies out into the cool night air, and as Xander and Gloria joined the turning couples on the polished parquet floor, the grand ballroom of Pyreptar Academy hummed with a quiet, persistent tension.
The masked guests moved with practiced elegance beneath the glittering chandeliers, exchanging polite smiles and formal bows. But beneath the velvet and silk, every person in the room knew the truth: the structured war of the Shadow Trials was over, and the real game was just beginning.
Out on the moonlit stone terrace, away from the glittering sea of masked faces and the insistent, mechanical rhythm of the waltz, the night air was cool and smelled faintly of damp mountain pine.
Yet the quiet did not offer sanctuary. Through the tall glass balcony doors, the ballroom remained a living tapestry of light and shadow, beautiful in its execution yet heavy with an unspoken malice.
Every graceful turn of a couple, every polite inclination of a masked head, was a prelude to the Veilrend Games.
Inside the hall, the amber light caught the silver filigree of Xander Gray’s mask as he spun Gloria Gracian through a complex turn near the center of the floor.
Despite the relaxed, almost effortless smile on Xander’s face, Samantha noticed the subtle shift in his posture—the way his shoulders remained loose, his eyes constantly tracking the reflection of the surrounding guests in the gilded moldings.
He knew precisely how many people were watching him. To the Great Houses, the son of an obscure lineage taking first place with 515 points was an anomaly; pairing him with a prominent Student Council member from House Gracian transformed that anomaly into a political statement.
