Chapter 564

The Aberrants—a race of unknown creatures that loved battle and bloodshed more than anything else.

They were always searching for stronger opponents, driven in part by their passive trait: the more injuries they sustained, the stronger they became.

Weak opponents meant nothing to them.

They were nothing more than trash and cannon fodder, insignificant creatures that could barely push them to their limits, let alone provide the kind of battle they craved.

And now, more than fifty of these monsters on the battlefield had paused whatever attacks they were carrying out to turn their attention towards the two strongest individuals on the Wall at that moment.

They had already had their fun with the kids, and the youngsters weren’t giving them much of a challenge anymore.

So, the moment Layla’s attack drew their attention, they abandoned their previous targets and dashed towards her like a horde of mindless zombies.

About a dozen Aberrants had already been fighting Captain Raze, but more of the fifty-plus creatures broke away from their previous opponents and charged towards him. The rest threw themselves towards the young lady hovering in the air.

A burst of static crackled through the others’ earpieces as Kai shouted, his voice strained from exhaustion.

"G-Guys, wherever you are, leave there and find a safe space. If you are close to the girl in the air, leave there now, otherwise you will regret it. She’s about to lock in, and in the process, might take out anything in her way. HURRY!"

Trisha didn’t wait to be warned a second time.

She had already exhausted her Meta-Force.

Her suit was deactivated, and she could barely stand, let alone fight. She desperately tried to push herself upright, but her battered body refused to cooperate.

Fortunately, shadows rippled beneath her.

The same shadows from the wing Layla had dropped spread beneath the girl. Without warning, Trisha sank into them, her fallen sword disappearing alongside her.

One by one, the cohort began scattering, desperately trying to put as much distance as possible between themselves and whatever was about to erupt.

The sound of the charging Aberrants resembled hordes of horses galloping across the earth. Their massive feet pounded against the ground, kicking up dust and wet soil as they surged forward.

Some of the teenagers struggled to evade the creatures’ enormous feet, narrowly avoiding being crushed beneath them as they scrambled out of the way.

Trisha reappeared from the shadows in a safe location, dozens of metres away from where Raze and Layla stood.

Van clutched his side as he picked up his pace, his suit already crumbling from its lack of a power source. With his equipment failing and his injuries catching up to him, he had no choice but to run with everything he had left.

Felix held Chloe tighter and began speeding away.

Thanks to his overwhelming agility, he crossed metres in a flash, rushing through the streets with stunning grace while keeping the girl secure in his arms.

Meanwhile, Kai and Caster could be seen riding on Caster’s wolf as they blurred through the streets.

The beast itself was bleeding after sustaining several injuries. The same could be said for Caster, whose hand was fractured, with broken bones protruding through the damaged flesh.

Despite their injuries, they continued moving away from the approaching danger.

Shockwaves kept erupting across the battlefield as Captain Raze continued cutting down Aberrant after Aberrant with relentless speed.

He had briefly taken notice of Layla’s appearance during the previous exchange. Seeing that she wasn’t attacking his squad and was targeting only the Aberrants, he had concluded that she was an ally.

...For now.

Although he was curious to know who she was and how she had managed to get there, that wasn’t the main issue at the moment.

Raze had been holding back because he didn’t want his attacks to affect his squad. But upon seeing them retreating towards a safer location, he nodded and exhaled.

The moment the squad covered the remaining distance and reached the spot where Trisha knelt, the entire earth erupted with such force that the explosion nearly threw them off their feet.

The rain and thunder rumbling overhead had nothing on the two monsters fighting in the distance.

The earth burst upwards, pillars rising as hands of solid earth reached out and seized the feet of several Aberrants. Raze vaulted from one pillar to another at such incredible speed that he became little more than a blur.

His axe sliced through the rain, its blade gleaming as he swung it with deadly precision.

For a brief moment, the head of the weapon glowed, as though burning with an unfamiliar heat that none could explain.

CLANG!

The axe collided with the claw hurtling towards the Captain. The impact erupted into a deafening explosion, tearing the Aberrant’s entire arm open.

Raze immediately moved beneath the creature, lunging sideways just as a second Aberrant attempted to crush him beneath its massive body.

All forty-something Aberrants were launching attack after attack at him.

Yet Raze didn’t care.

The earth rumbled beneath his feet, propelling him forward as he tore past the creatures with astonishing speed, making their attacks look almost meaningless.

His robe clung to his frame as he brought down one Aberrant after another.

Nonstop.

Relentless.

Kicking off the earth, Raze launched himself upwards. He rolled across a raised platform before pushing off again, leaping towards another Aberrant before it could properly react.

He was moving so quickly that the creatures could barely tell who would become his next target. One moment he was before them; the next, he was already tearing through another opponent with furious efficiency.

TCHAAAAK!

His axe swept around an Aberrant’s neck. With a fluid spin of his body, Raze tore the creature’s head clean off before kicking it into the face of another Aberrant.

The force of the kick propelled him backwards, allowing him to evade a punch descending from above. The massive fist crashed into the earth where he had been, leaving a deep crater in its wake.

Without missing a beat, Raze reached into his pocket, pulled out a candy, and tossed it into the air.

He twirled around, bringing his battle-axe in front of him just as another claw came slashing towards him. The weapon deflected the attack to the side, its force barely moving his limbs.

Raze parried the strike away, pulled back one hand, and reached into the air.

Applying a little force, he pushed himself off the claw in front of him and vaulted backwards, his mouth opening as he did so.

The rain and candy fell straight into his mouth.

He landed on a pillar with a skid.

"Ah...."

Planting his battle-axe beside him, the man briefly surveyed the battlefield, only to realise that he had taken down about five Aberrants in the time it had taken him to perform those movements.

’Not enough. Not fast enough.’

Grabbing his weapon, Raze pulled it upwards just as a shockwave reached him.

His head tilted towards the distance, where Layla was having her fun.
