Captain Wright, who had been taking notes, suddenly looked up. ’What did he just say?’

’On purpose?!’

Seeing all eyes on him, Kane Lloyd closed his own, seeming to savor the moment.

"Explain yourself!" Captain Wright slammed his hand on the desk, his expression stern.

Kane Lloyd opened his eyes and pouted, as if his fun had been spoiled. "It’s their fault for flaunting their pregnant bellies. It reminded my parents of what they lost."

A while back, when the young couple was on their way to a prenatal check-up, they happened to walk past Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd.

The happy look on the couple’s faces as they caressed the woman’s belly reminded Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd of the grandson they never had.

Then they looked at their younger son, who was disfigured and had no chance of finding a wife to carry on the family line. Overcome with grief, they cried all the way home.

At that moment, Kane Lloyd was in the middle of a heated argument with the author of a novel he was following online, and his temper was already running high.

After finding out why his parents were so upset, something in his head snapped, and he made a decision on the spot.

’He was going to prove to that author that his point of view was right!’

For his first target, he randomly chose the Lee Family. He made a quick plan and, using the cover of bad weather that night, he killed them.

It wasn’t until the next morning, when Mrs. Lloyd got up to make breakfast for her husband and son, that she noticed something was wrong. After pressing him, she finally learned that her son had killed someone.

To keep their son from going back to prison, the two of them acted almost without thinking, immediately cleaning up the aftermath.

After that came the young couple, and then today, Rose Jennings’s family.

Except for the first murder, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd were aware of all the subsequent ones. You could even call them accomplices.

"My parents have suffered so much. If I can make them happy just by lifting a finger, why would I refuse?" Kane Lloyd’s smile was chilling. From start to finish, he had never regretted his actions.

"You know better than anyone why your parents lost their grandson, don’t you?

If you hadn’t caused your older brother’s death and then forced Rose Jennings to sign that settlement agreement, would she have been angry enough to abort the child?" Captain Wright frowned and slammed his hand on the table again.

To put it bluntly, it had never once occurred to Kane Lloyd that he himself was the sole cause of his parents’ current suffering.

"So what? She married my brother. Even if he died, she should have dutifully given birth to the child and stayed home to serve her parents-in-law. Not run back to her own family, get an abortion, and cut off my family’s bloodline!

If I wasn’t afraid of getting caught right away, she would’ve been the first one I killed. If I’d known I’d be caught on the third day, I would’ve just killed her on day one to send her down to keep my brother company!" Kane Lloyd completely ignored what Captain Wright was saying.

In his mind, Rose Jennings was the ultimate culprit who had betrayed his brother, betrayed the Lloyd Family, and caused his parents so much grief.

Hearing this, Zoe Sawyer shook her head, not wanting to listen any longer.

’You can’t change the way Kane Lloyd thinks.’

’People like him are just stubborn to a fault.’

"It’s all just twisted logic. Don’t mind him. We can leave the rest to Captain Wright and his team." Heath Hale also watched for a moment, then, confirming their part was done, decided it was time to pack up and head back to Varden.

They had a pile of their own work to do, after all.

More importantly, they needed to seize the opportunity while the local police were still busy with the Kane Lloyd case to quickly take Beau and her family back with them.

Only after the paperwork was officially processed could they consider her truly "poached" for their side.

After informing the local chief, Zoe Sawyer and her group of four hurried toward Beau’s home.

The neighbors around the Lee Family’s home breathed a sigh of relief when they heard the killer had been caught.

’It’s a good thing he’s caught. Otherwise, we’d be on edge every single day.’

’Couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep.’

Heath Hale explained that they were heading back and asked if Beau’s grandparents were free to come along.

The department back there had everything they needed; they just had to bring their identification and some clothes.

Beau’s grandparents thought for a moment, then shook their heads. "We were neighbors, after all. With what happened to their family, and no other elders around, we should wait until after we’ve arranged the funeral for all four of them before we go.

"But, we might have to trouble you to take Beau with you first."

There would be a lot to do, and Beau’s grandparents were worried they’d be too busy to look after their granddaughter.

Zoe Sawyer’s group of four naturally wouldn’t refuse, but this was something the grandparents had to tell Beau themselves.

Perhaps because her grandparents had explained everything to her beforehand, Beau didn’t cry and fuss as Zoe Sawyer’s team had expected. Instead, she straightforwardly put on her backpack and, early the next morning, boarded the high-speed train back to Varden with them.

"You’re back? Good work. I’ve already received the report on this mission and submitted it right away. Now we just wait for the good news." The bureau chief stopped what he was doing and looked at the four of them with a smile.

He knew Zoe Sawyer had impressive abilities that were very useful for solving cases.

But to have caught the killer in just over a day... and according to a private text from Heath Hale, Zoe Sawyer’s ability had even leveled up.

This was truly a huge, pleasant surprise for him and Elder Crowe.

"Chief, did the rest of the interrogation results come in? Why did Kane Lloyd’s parents burn down Rose Jennings’s parents’ house? Isn’t that an easy way to get exposed?" Sean Hughes asked, a little curious.

They had been in a hurry to get back yesterday, so they hadn’t heard the full story.

Their only option was to ask the chief now.

"According to their testimony, Mr. Lloyd has a malignant tumor and doesn’t have long to live.

"Coupled with the fact that his son had also killed people and had set his sights on Rose Jennings as the third target, they decided to go all in and just burn down her parents’ house as well." The chief recalled the records from the report and gave a simple explanation.

’If they got caught, it didn’t matter; they’d just treat it as retiring in prison, as long as their son wasn’t discovered.’

With that thought in mind, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd decided to act without a moment’s hesitation.

The bigger the scene they made, the more all the attention would be on them, giving Kane Lloyd a better chance to escape.

They had calculated everything perfectly, but they never expected to run into Zoe Sawyer. They were all taken down in one fell swoop.

All their plans went up in smoke.

"Retiring, my ass. They’ll probably have to see their son off one last time," Evan Keller said with a scornful expression and a dismissive tone.

Given the heinous nature of Kane Lloyd’s crimes, he would most likely be sentenced to immediate execution.

"Let’s not talk about that for now. Chief, we brought you back a special talent." Sean Hughes interrupted the conversation, then pulled Beau in from outside and explained to the chief the role she played in the case.

The chief’s eyes lit up after hearing the full story. ’What a talent!’

"Well done! Quickly, take her to get the paperwork done!" The chief knew that only after the paperwork was complete would Beau officially be one of them, so he hurriedly urged Sean Hughes to take her to get it processed.

Just as Evan Keller was about to leave with them, he heard what the chief said next.

"Evan, your brother sent a letter for you and Lynn Grant."
