Zoe Sawyer and Sean Hughes, who had been on their way out, stopped in their tracks. They took a few steps back, perked up their ears, and started eavesdropping without any attempt to hide it.

Zoe Sawyer remembered asking Officer Lee about Evan Keller and Lynn Grant’s relationship before. He had brushed her off with a few vague words back then. ’Now’s my chance to find out!’

Heath Hale reached the doorway before realizing the other two weren’t following. He turned around, looked at them, and fell silent.

’Curiosity killed the cat...’

That’s what he thought, but his feet had a mind of their own. He and Beau stopped at the door to watch.

Evan Keller saw what the four of them were doing, but he couldn’t be bothered with them right now. His eyes were glued to the envelope in front of him.

"Chief, is this the only letter? Is there nothing else?" Evan Keller’s expression was cold, but his tone held a faint trace of hope.

But all that hope was extinguished when the chief shook his head.

"Then I won’t disturb you any longer. I’m heading back to my office." Evan Keller took the envelope, stuffed it in his pocket, and strode out of the office.

He didn’t pause or acknowledge the four people who were openly eavesdropping in the office.

The chief watched Evan Keller’s retreating figure, then looked over at Sean Hughes, who was still in the office. He sighed. "Sean, you two should go and talk to him."

"Okay!"

Sean Hughes didn’t refuse. He nodded, then grabbed Zoe Sawyer and hurried after him.

As he passed Beau and Heath Hale, Sean Hughes paused for a moment and asked, "Do you two want to come with us?"

"Nah, I need to take Beau to get his paperwork done. You guys hurry up and catch him." Heath Hale had no intention of following, just urging Sean Hughes to hurry so they wouldn’t lose him.

Zoe Sawyer followed along, a puzzled look on her face. "I asked Officer Lee before what the deal was with Evan Keller and Medical Examiner Grant. He didn’t tell me, just said I should guess, and that the answer would make my jaw drop."

"So, what is their relationship?"

There had been too many cases afterward, plus training, so she’d completely forgotten about it.

But now, the chief’s sudden comment had thoroughly piqued Zoe Sawyer’s curiosity.

Sean Hughes was in no mood to make Zoe Sawyer guess now. He simply explained the relationship between the three of them. "To put it simply, it’s a stable love triangle."

A stable love triangle...

"He loves her, she loves another man, but she’s actually in love with the first guy! A solid love triangle!" Zoe Sawyer blurted out.

Sean Hughes’s eyes widened, a hint of a smile in his voice. "Close. A little more melodramatic."

Zoe Sawyer kept her head down, walking in step with Sean Hughes, and was just about to offer another melodramatic theory when she walked right into someone’s back.

"When you’re gossiping about someone, could you at least try to avoid the person you’re talking about?" Evan Keller’s expression was one of resignation.

’I’ve never seen people gossip so loudly right behind someone’s back!’

A soft chuckle came from up ahead.

Zoe Sawyer looked up and saw that Evan Keller’s destination was, surprisingly, the medical examiner’s office.

Evan Keller stood there with his arms crossed. The envelope he’d been holding was now in Lynn Grant’s hands.

Shifting her gaze to Sean Hughes beside her, Zoe Sawyer saw that he was grinning with his hands clasped behind his head, completely ignoring Evan Keller’s cold expression.

*Hiss...* ’Is he really that bold?’

Zoe Sawyer stared at Sean Hughes and drew in a sharp breath.

"Relax. Everything we know, Captain Keller told us himself. They don’t care, so you don’t need to worry so much." Sean Hughes grinned, slinging an arm over Zoe Sawyer’s shoulder and pulling her close.

Evan Keller rubbed the bridge of his nose, once again regretting getting drunk and spilling everything.

"Basically, the melodrama isn’t about us, it’s about my brother’s and my parents, and Lynn Grant’s parents. The four of them fell for each other, but they were too deeply tied by mutual interests to get divorced."

"In the end, they compromised. The four of them live together, and they raised the three of us kids together." Evan Keller chose his words carefully as he explained the situation to Zoe Sawyer.

His family and Lynn Grant’s family were neighbors. The parents always got along well and saw each other every day.

Then one day, two of them suddenly fell for each other.

They wanted to be together all the time, so they decided to confess to their respective spouses. But when they did, they discovered their spouses had also fallen for each other and were about to do the same.

Well, that solved that. No need for a divorce.

They just knocked down the wall between their houses, combined them into one, and raised the kids together.

Evan Keller and Lynn Grant basically grew up together, and they accepted their parents’ relationship without any issue.

When they grew up, Evan Keller had his first crush and fell for Lynn Grant. After he confessed his feelings, he found out she was in love with his younger brother.

Just when he thought the older generation’s melodrama was about to repeat itself with them, Evan Keller’s brother confessed that he was gay and in love with his own brother, so he couldn’t accept Lynn Grant’s feelings. However, that turned out to be a misunderstanding; they later learned his brother was actually a narcissist.

Feeling like he had caused trouble for the family, Evan Keller’s brother chose to go abroad for further studies and hasn’t been back in several years.

He doesn’t answer calls or reply to messages, just sends one letter a month to let them know he’s okay.

Because of their own messy relationship, the older generation felt they had no right to discipline him, so they decided to let him do as he pleased.

When Evan Keller received the letter in the office, his reaction was actually directed at his brother’s refusal to answer his calls.

After hearing the whole story, Zoe Sawyer had to pick her jaw up off the floor.

Each part of the story sounded normal enough on its own, but all together, it was just bizarre.

"Evan, have you ever considered checking on your ancestral graves?" Zoe Sawyer’s expression was hard to read. ’How did one family end up with all this drama?’

’Parents in an open relationship, a narcissistic brother, and then himself, stuck in unrequited love.’

’No wonder Officer Lee said the story between Evan Keller and Lynn Grant would make your jaw drop.’

’He wasn’t lying!’

The way Zoe Sawyer looked at Evan Keller turned exceptionally strange.

Evan Keller irritably tapped Zoe Sawyer on the head. "What ancestral graves? I’m a staunch materialist!"

"My family’s situation might be rare, but it’s just a coincidence!"

’It’s not like there aren’t even more explosive relationships out there; they just don’t know about them!’

Besides, he and Lynn Grant had already moved on. Otherwise, how could they treat it like a joke with their colleagues at the station, even letting them tease him about it?

Before Zoe Sawyer could say anything, Sean Hughes noticed that Lynn Grant’s expression seemed off.

She was turning the perfectly fine pages of the letter over and over, folding them and trying to piece them together with other pages.

"Lynn, is something wrong with the letter?" Sean Hughes asked, looking puzzled.

Evan Keller turned to look at Lynn Grant. Seeing the familiar way she was handling the letter, a bad feeling washed over him.

"What is it? What happened?" Evan Keller strode over to Lynn Grant’s side, reaching out to take the letter from her.

Lynn Grant handed it to him. Her expression was exceptionally serious as she pointed to a spot on the envelope and spoke.

"Something’s happened to Frank Keller. Look here!"
