Chapter 86: Chapter 86: Arriving at the Door with an Axe

As Rose Jennings spoke, her face was etched with blatant disgust and fear.

She would never forget that night when the three of them had cornered her in a room, tearfully begging her to sign a letter of forgiveness.

And yet, her husband had died on that very spot, right at their feet.

It was as if the three of them had completely forgotten.

When Rose Jennings refused, Mrs. Lloyd’s expression twisted, and she declared that she had already lost one son and couldn’t bear to lose another.

After Rose Jennings refused again, Kane Lloyd, who had been silent the whole time, pulled a fruit knife out of nowhere. He brutally sliced open both corners of his mouth, exposing his gums.

The sound of dripping blood was punctuated by Mrs. Lloyd’s screams and the muffled laughter of that madman, Kane Lloyd.

"Sister-in-law, are you satisfied now? If this isn’t enough, how about I cut you, too?"

Those words haunted her like a nightmare.

At the same time, she regretted her impulsiveness. ’I should have just agreed from the start. If I really provoked that madman and he’d stabbed me, it would have all been over.’

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd rushed their son to the hospital for stitches, but not before shoving Rose Jennings into the bathroom. They took her phone, leaving her with absolutely nothing.

With no food or water, Rose eventually relented and signed the letter of forgiveness to regain her freedom.

The day she was let out was also the day the verdict came down.

Rose Jennings packed her things and went straight back to her parents’ house. To completely sever ties with the Lloyd family, the first thing she did was have an abortion. But her former parents-in-law found out and raised hell for a long time.

It was only with the help of her neighbors that she was finally able to get rid of the old couple.

Her life had finally been heading in a better direction. But now, the police had shown up asking about Kane Lloyd, instantly dragging Rose back into the nightmare of those few days.

Sean Hughes pursed her lips after hearing the entire story.

They hadn’t wanted to dredge up Rose Jennings’s painful memories, but the situation was urgent. They had no other choice.

"Officer, why are you suddenly asking about that madman, Kane Lloyd?" Rose Jennings had a bad feeling.

’That’s right,’ she thought. ’I remember that madman got out of prison a few months ago. Don’t tell me he’s still nursing a grudge and wants to come after me for revenge?’

"Is he coming to get revenge on me?" Rose Jennings’s face went deathly pale. ’There’s still time. Maybe I should pack our things, take my child, and go into hiding for a while.’ 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

’No, wait. If he can’t find me, will my parents be his next target?’

After all, her late ex-husband had once mentioned that Kane Lloyd had killed another child back in the countryside when they were young.

But it had happened a long time ago, and since the Lloyd family never went back there, Rose had no way of knowing if it was true.

Rose Jennings looked at Sean Hughes and the two officers with her, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. ’Since the police are here, surely there’s something they can do, right?’

"It’s a bit complicated, and right now it’s just a suspicion. However, to ensure your family’s safety, we’ll have officers stationed inside and around your house tonight."

"Would that arrangement be acceptable to you?" Sean Hughes asked, briefly explaining their plan.

Rose Jennings, of course, did not refuse. She agreed immediately upon hearing Sean’s explanation.

"Should I tell my husband not to come home tonight?" Rose Jennings asked nervously. If she could, she would have taken her child and left herself.

Sean Hughes patted Rose Jennings’s shoulder reassuringly. "Calm down. We won’t let you or your family be put in danger. We’re confirming Kane Lloyd’s location right now. As soon as we know he’s not in the vicinity, we’ll get you and your child out through a back door or window."

As for Rose Jennings’s husband, he would have to return home first. They needed to keep up appearances, at the very least.

Soon, Sean Hughes received a message from Heath Hale confirming that Kane Lloyd and his parents were at home. She quickly arranged for Rose Jennings and her child to leave through a concealed exit.

Afterward, she and Captain Wright led the team members to set up an ambush in various corners of the house, ready to arrest their target the moment he appeared.

As night fell, Rose Jennings’s current husband returned home as instructed by the police, his expression perfectly normal.

He was whisked away at the first opportunity.

The police then chose two officers from the team whose builds matched the descriptions of the couple, having them take their place as decoys.

They drew the curtains and had one officer hold a doll. From the outside, the scene looked quite convincing.

As the hours ticked by, an inexplicable tension mounted for everyone, from Sean Hughes and the others inside Rose’s house to Zoe Sawyer standing guard out front.

Meanwhile, Heath Hale and his team were lying in wait across from the Lloyd house.

It was a two-story, self-built house with no back door. The walkways on either side were each shaded by a large tree.

Heath Hale stared at the building, a flicker of confusion in his eyes as he saw the tree branches stir slightly.

’There’s no wind,’ he thought. ’Why are those branches moving?’

He then recalled that the patrons at the late-night food stall had all said they never saw Kane Lloyd leave. Suddenly, it all made sense.

’He didn’t use the front door! He climbed the tree to get away behind the vacant house next door. Of course no one saw him leave!’

"Kane Lloyd is on the move! All units, be ready!" Heath Hale pressed his earpiece, reporting the development.

"Copy!"

"Copy!"

A few acknowledgments came over the radio.

Everyone was on high alert, fully prepared for what was to come.

At eleven o’clock at night, the surrounding streets were deserted. Kane Lloyd, dressed in a black raincoat and holding a brand-new axe, stood a short distance from Rose Jennings’s house.

The intimate silhouettes moving behind the window, bathed in the warm yellow light of the lamp, was a picture of domestic bliss that stung his eyes. A cold glint flashed in Kane Lloyd’s gaze.

’Go on, laugh,’ he thought. ’After tonight, you won’t be laughing anymore.’

’Rose Jennings, you bitch. How dare you remarry, cuckolding my brother like that. Fine. You and your little bastard can go to hell together!’

’Then you can repent to my brother in the afterlife!’

Kane Lloyd put on a face mask, then pulled a ski mask over his head.

With practiced ease, he picked the lock on Rose Jennings’s front door with a piece of wire.

Without a glance elsewhere, he gripped his axe and charged straight for the room where the light had been on.

He must have cased the place many times, because Kane Lloyd knew the layout of the house like the back of his hand.

He raised his axe high and brought it down hard on the door. He wrenched it free, then kicked the door open.

A sadistic grin spread across Kane Lloyd’s face, anticipating Rose Jennings’s screams.

But when he burst in, he found two uniformed police officers standing inside.

"Fuck! It’s a trap!"
