Chapter 208: Chapter 208: From Passive to Active

As everyone watched, Zoe Sawyer circled the location of Yvette Yates’s apartment complex on a nearby map.

"This complex is a bit far from the station, but it’s still within our jurisdiction.

As for this premonition... is it like before, where the range expands the more I use it?" Zoe Sawyer posed her question.

Beside her, Heath Hale crossed his arms, looking thoughtful.

If that was the case, they could intervene in more situations, which also meant Zoe would need more personnel.

Otherwise, with the increased workload, everyone would be working around the clock with no time to rest.

They definitely needed to increase their manpower so people could at least work in shifts.

"We’ll verify that later. You’ve been running around all day, so go back to the dorm with Beau and get some rest. I’m going to see the chief," Heath Hale said, then hurried off toward the chief’s office.

After hearing Heath Hale out, the chief fell into a pensive silence. He had initially thought that since she had just been transferred, few of his colleagues at the provincial bureau had actually witnessed Zoe Sawyer’s special ability, even if they knew about it.

Assigning too many people at once could easily cause resentment, and they hadn’t had a chance to gel as a team yet, which would be a problem on missions.

It seemed better to continue with Evan Keller, Sean Hughes, and the others for now. He could add more people after the new colleagues had gone through an adjustment period.

But just today, Zoe Sawyer’s ability had evolved again, increasing the probability of encountering a case every time she opened a door.

If they stuck with the same number of people, it would indeed be too much for them to handle.

"I understand. Leave this to me. I’ll take care of it," the chief said, looking at Heath Hale, who stood before his desk.

In less than two days, Zoe Sawyer’s team had grown considerably.

"So, when you said you were going to see the chief... you were talking about getting more people?" Zoe Sawyer stared at Heath Hale in disbelief, looking at the two new teams standing before her.

The new teams were modeled after Evan Keller’s and Sean Hughes’s.

Zoe Sawyer glanced to the side, where a male and a female doctor also stood.

’The number of people under my command is almost as large as a whole police station!’

"Special circumstances call for special measures. Given the frequency with which you’re running into cases, we can’t just have Evan Keller and the others working nonstop, can we? Even a man of steel couldn’t take that," Heath Hale said, his tone matter-of-fact.

In truth, an even more important factor was Zoe Sawyer’s physical and mental well-being.

But Zoe Sawyer’s ability was too unique; there was no one who could take shifts with her. The chief had no choice but to report the situation up the chain of command, and his superiors gave special approval for him to assign two dedicated doctors to Zoe.

"From now on, they’ll be responsible for your health. No one can view your medical data except the chief and higher-ups, so don’t worry," Heath Hale explained, noticing the look in Zoe Sawyer’s eyes.

To start, however, Evan Keller and Sean Hughes would still take the lead. They would guide the two new teams through the entire process and help them gradually adapt to Zoe Sawyer’s rhythm.

After all, they were there to support Zoe Sawyer, not the other way around.

Although Zoe Sawyer was inwardly shocked by the numbers, her training over the past period helped her remain composed. She simply nodded at them and said, "I look forward to working with you all."

The two new teams saluted Zoe Sawyer in unison, and with that, the matter was settled.

"You know... before, it’s always been a passive thing, stumbling into cases. What do you think would happen if I tried to open the door proactively?" Zoe Sawyer said, an idea suddenly sparking in her mind as she stared at the report in front of her.

’If I open it proactively, does that mean I can control it?’

’Could I choose to see a premonition, or choose to see something that’s already happened?’

Once the idea took root, Zoe Sawyer found it hard to sit still.

If her theory was correct, she could shift from being reactive to proactive and even prevent some bad things from happening.

"How did I not think of this before? Let’s go, Heath! Let’s go try it!" Zoe Sawyer exclaimed, excitedly slamming her hand on the desk as she shot to her feet.

With that, she marched toward the other side of the room, under the curious gazes of everyone in the office.

Heath Hale followed behind her, answering her earlier question. "This ability came on so suddenly, and it didn’t come with a manual. It’s normal to be cautious while you’re figuring it out.

Now that you’ve got a handle on it, it makes sense that you’d think about switching from defense to offense."

Previously, Zoe Sawyer had been so exhausted just dealing with the cases that even if they had thought of it, it wouldn’t have been a good time to bring it up.

But now that her ability had evolved, it was perfectly normal for her to consider this possibility.

"So, what are we doing now?" the new officer, Hayden Shaw, asked Sean Hughes in a low voice, watching Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale’s retreating backs.

Sean Hughes glanced over before quickly looking away. He answered her quietly, "At times like this, we just wait. If something happens, Zoe will let us know immediately. Don’t worry."

A lot of equipment was set up next to the door.

Officer Lee had a computer specifically connected to this equipment, so he would be the first to notice if any image appeared.

"I see," Hayden Shaw said, pulling her gaze away.

Meanwhile, Zoe Sawyer, still under everyone’s curious stares, walked up to the door.

She gripped the doorknob, took a deep breath, and silently focused her thoughts on seeing a premonition.

When that familiar sensation washed over her, a look of delight spread across Zoe Sawyer’s face. ’It worked!’

Zoe Sawyer opened the door. The first thing she saw was a sidewalk.

Zoe Sawyer reached out her hand, trying to pass through, but that familiar resistance stopped her.

Coupled with the dimming sky on the other side, she clenched her fists in excitement. "It worked!"

After a moment of excitement, Zoe Sawyer focused her attention on the scene beyond the door. After all, that was the main event.

The signs of the shops along the sidewalk were now lit up. Zoe Sawyer scanned her surroundings, trying to find any information that could pinpoint the location.

Soon, her gaze was drawn to a vase-shaped plaque on a streetlight.

Just as Zoe Sawyer was about to look for more clues, a gentle female voice came from not far away.

"We’re taking our little Niuniu to Grandma’s for some yummy treats~ Let’s go see what Grandma made for us~"

Following the voice, a family of three appeared in Zoe Sawyer’s line of sight.

A tall young man was holding a small baby, a doting, gentle smile on his face.

His wife, walking beside him, carried the baby’s clothes and a bottle, radiating a gentle aura.

The young couple chatted back and forth, making the baby in the man’s arms giggle with delight.

The heartwarming scene brought an unconscious smile to Zoe Sawyer’s lips, but then her expression stiffened.

’Since they’re the focus of this vision, what’s going to happen next?’

’Is this family of three about to be in a terrible accident?’

’A car crash?’

’Or a targeted killing?’

The thought had barely crossed Zoe Sawyer’s mind when a speeding sedan suddenly swerved onto the sidewalk, hurtling straight toward the unsuspecting family of three.

"No!"
