My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 207: Getting Sick from a Wild Life
Chapter 207: Chapter 207: Getting Sick from a Wild Life
Yvette Yates looked hesitant and ashamed, her tone awkward as she finished her sentence.
The disdain she expected never came. Evan Keller’s expression remained neutral as he continued his questioning. "So, to be clear, you didn’t want us to go in because you thought your current boyfriend was inside at the time?
And due to... certain personal preferences, it would have been inconvenient?"
Yvette Yates looked embarrassed, but she nodded. After hesitating for a moment, she asked in a low voice, "Don’t you... don’t you think what I do is wrong?"
After all, her boyfriend’s profession wasn’t exactly respectable, and a lot of people were prejudiced against it.
Evan Keller wrote in his notepad without looking up. "That’s your private business. As long as you’re not breaking any laws and your safety and property aren’t being compromised, the police won’t stop you from doing whatever you want."
As for Yvette Yates’s hobbies?
It really wasn’t a big deal.
Yvette Yates breathed a sigh of relief after getting his reassurance.
"What about that ex-boyfriend of yours? What did he say to you that made you suddenly change your story?" Evan Keller pressed.
At the mention of this, the color drained from Yvette Yates’s face.
"We’ve already arrested him. If you know of any other illegal activities he’s committed, you need to tell us now. It will help us build a stronger case against him." Evan Keller explained the situation to Yvette Yates, then added reassuringly, "Don’t worry. We’ve dealt with plenty of situations like this, and we’ve resolved them successfully. Please, trust us."
She was just a kind girl, not some criminal, so of course Evan Keller and the others held no judgment against her.
"He said... he said he secretly hid a phone in the closet. He always set it to record... Everything we did... it was all recorded.
He also said that if I’d dared to say anything to you, he’d release it all." Yvette Yates twisted a lock of her hair in terror, her fingers knotting it around themselves.
She was pulling so hard she even snapped a few strands.
’Of course, I knew what he did was illegal. But if he really released the videos, I would be utterly ruined.’
’Even if I said they were fakes, that he used deepfake technology, people would just ask, ’Why did he only target you? Did you do something to deserve it?’’
It was classic victim-blaming, but the threat held immense power over her.
She didn’t want to bring shame to her parents in their later years or tarnish their reputation.
"You could have told us. We could have helped you." Evan Keller looked at Yvette Yates, his expression serious. "If you’re being threatened or harassed, you can always call the police."
Yvette Yates shook her head hesitantly and explained her worries.
She’d heard from her parents about a girl a year ahead of her in school. The girl’s fiancé had deepfaked her face onto indecent videos and then "accidentally" played them at their engagement party.
Even though the woman reported it and the videos were later proven to be fake, too many people had seen them.
Vicious rumors spread like wildfire, casting a dark cloud over her entire family.
In the end, the woman’s family couldn’t withstand the public pressure and moved away.
Her fiancé insisted he had made the videos for his own private viewing and had simply grabbed the wrong file in his haste.
The police had no evidence to prove it was intentional, so all they could do was fine him and give him a formal warning.
For the man, it was a slap on the wrist. That’s why Yvette Yates hadn’t dared to take the risk.
Evan Keller sighed, frustrated. He knew she was right. If not for the subsequent attempt on Yvette Yates’s life, her ex-boyfriend’s actions—even if reported—would have likely resulted in nothing more than a fine and a formal warning.
Even if convicted for illegal recording, he’d be out of jail in no time.
"It’s alright. You don’t have to worry about that now," Evan Keller said, his tone reassuring.
Yvette Yates forced a difficult smile. The recent chain of events had left her timid and paranoid.
’What if... what if this new boyfriend is the same? What would I do then?’
"Don’t worry," Evan Keller said, walking over to her. He patted her shoulder, then poured her a glass of water. "We’ll get you justice. Just sit here and rest for a bit."
Just as he stepped out of the interrogation room, he saw Sean Hughes approaching with another deposition.
"Did he confess?" Evan Keller asked.
"He did. Two months ago, he caught an STD from sleeping around and his other marks dropped him.
He’s also a big spender and had no savings left. Desperate, he waited until Yvette Yates was at work, snuck into her apartment, and hid on top of the wardrobe in her bedroom." Sean Hughes handed the file to Evan Keller.
After living with her for several years, he knew her habits well. Yvette Yates was a neat freak, but she only cleaned the top of the wardrobe about once a year.
As a result, the top of the wardrobe was just a storage space for miscellaneous, unused items.
By pushing aside some of the clutter, he created a gap just large enough for a man to lie down in.
When she wasn’t home, he would climb down to eat, drink, and use the bathroom.
Since Yvette Yates didn’t have any security cameras in her home, and the man was careful to cover his tracks, he went completely unnoticed.
This went on for two months. The agony of his illness, combined with the constant sight of Yvette Yates and her new boyfriend’s intimacy, became a torment to him.
The man began to entertain a horrifying idea: kill Yvette Yates, take her money, and live a life of leisure.
And that’s what led to today’s incident.
If Zoe Sawyer hadn’t discovered it in time, a true tragedy would have occurred.
"Now that we have the full story, let’s proceed by the book. I need you to go and console Yvette Yates.
Some things will be better coming from you." Evan Keller flipped through the deposition, and once he was sure nothing was missing, he closed the file.
This case was straightforward. With witness testimony, physical evidence, and a confession from the culprit, it would be closed quickly.
Sean Hughes nodded and accepted the assignment.
"Where’s Zoe Sawyer?" Evan Keller asked, stopping just before he left.
"In her office," Sean Hughes replied before pushing open the interrogation room door to go talk with Yvette Yates.
Having discovered a new ability, Zoe Sawyer, as the one directly involved, would definitely have to write a report for the chief of police.
When Evan Keller got back, he saw Heath Hale and a few others crowded around Zoe Sawyer’s desk.
"From the initial vision to the moment the attacker made his move... it was just over two hours." Zoe Sawyer looked at the timeline she’d made, calculating the duration of her premonition.
’I wonder if that window of time can be extended.’
Compared to post-cognition, precognition of future events was far more unpredictable. It required much more preparation and contingency planning.
"There’s one more thing we need to confirm."
