My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 206: Saving the Courtesan
Chapter 206: Chapter 206: Saving the Courtesan
Before Yvette Yates could say anything, she heard Zoe Sawyer whisper, "I’m not sure what you’re worried about, but you can tell this guy is up to no good.
Here, take this. If there’s an emergency, spray it in his eyes. Your safety comes first, no matter what."
After giving her instructions and making sure Yvette Yates understood, Zoe Sawyer finally felt a bit more at ease.
Luckily, the weather was cold, so tucking a small canister of pepper spray into a sleeve wouldn’t be noticeable.
She pretended to go inside to wash her hands. When she came back out, Evan Keller and the others were already waiting by the living room door.
As she walked over, Zoe Sawyer noticed out of the corner of her eye that the sky outside the curtains now looked no different from how it had when she was inside!
It was almost time!
Before closing the door, Zoe Sawyer felt a little more relieved after seeing Yvette Yates give her a slight nod.
However, Yvette Yates had the presence of mind to only leave the door ajar.
She breathed a sigh of relief once she was sure the man sitting on the living room sofa hadn’t noticed.
Meanwhile, after stepping out of the Yates residence, Zoe Sawyer and the others quickly split into two groups, stationing themselves on either side of the entrance. If anything unexpected happened, they could rush in to save her at a moment’s notice.
This was especially true for Heath Hale, who, upon noticing Yvette Yates hadn’t locked the door, became even more certain of his suspicions.
Yvette Yates returned to the living room and faced the man with a stern expression. "Let me make this clear one more time: we’ve already broken up! Stop harassing me!
If there’s a next time, I’m really going to call the police!"
As she spoke, Yvette Yates subconsciously squeezed the small canister in her sleeve.
Hearing Yvette Yates’s words, the man stood up from the sofa and advanced on her, one step at a time. "What right do you have to bring up breaking up? If anyone’s going to do it, it’ll be me.
What right does a bitch like you have to say it!"
As he finished his sentence, the man lunged forward, grabbing Yvette Yates by the neck and slamming her against the wall with a loud THUD.
Outside, Zoe Sawyer couldn’t take it anymore and was about to charge in when Heath Hale grabbed her arm and shook his head.
’It hasn’t gone far enough yet. If they go in now, the guy will be locked up for a few days at most and then get out.’
’It would be no deterrent at all!’
"How many women have you been seeing on the side? Did I get you out of that life just so you could cheat on me?" Yvette Yates coughed a few times, glaring at the enraged man before her and letting out a cold sneer.
The man casually released his grip. He watched Yvette Yates clutch her throat as she crumpled to the floor, coughing nonstop. "What am I? I’m a gigolo. You knew this kind of thing from the start, didn’t you?
You played with me for a few years, and now you’re tired of me, think I’m too old, so you found someone younger and better-looking? Let me tell you, it’s not that easy!"
At this, the man’s expression clearly grew furious again.
He grabbed Yvette Yates by the ankle and dragged her over to the sofa.
From under the coffee table, he pulled out a fruit knife and brandished it next to Yvette Yates’s face. "You actually dared to call the cops on me? Tell me, how should I punish you?
I don’t have much longer to live anyway. I might as well take you down with me. You have no idea how long I’ve been planning this."
With that, the man reached out and clamped his hand tightly over Yvette Yates’s mouth and nose, trying to suffocate her.
Yvette Yates struggled frantically, staring at the ferocious expression on her former lover’s face.
As the air in her lungs dwindled, Yvette Yates painstakingly pulled the item Zoe Sawyer had given her from her sleeve.
Then she aimed it at the man’s eyes and pressed the button.
As a blast of irritating gas hit his eyes, the man abruptly let go, clutching his face and screaming in agony.
Hearing the commotion inside, Zoe Sawyer and the others burst through the door. They saw the man, who had been so arrogant and domineering just moments ago, now on the ground, clutching his eyes and wailing. Next to him lay a fruit knife.
Yvette Yates was clutching her own neck, coughing uncontrollably. The bright red marks on her throat said it all.
"Officers, I want to file a report! He broke into my home and tried to kill me!" Upon seeing Zoe Sawyer and Evan Keller, Yvette Yates pointed a finger at the man on the floor, her voice hoarse.
"Breaking and entering, attempted murder... you can save it for the station." Evan Keller gestured for the team members beside him to take the man away.
As for Yvette Yates, she would naturally have to go back with them as well. But before that, they needed to take photos for evidence and get her to a hospital to see how serious her injuries were.
"So, tell me. Why were you so insistent on doing this your way?
If we hadn’t sensed something was wrong, left that item with you, and waited by the door, things might not have turned out so fortunately.
You should trust the police, not lock yourself in a room alone with that man when you know it’s dangerous!" Evan Keller rapped his knuckles on the table, his tone severe as he looked at Yvette Yates sitting across from him.
Yvette Yates looked down at her hands, unconsciously picking at her manicure.
Finally, as if she had made up her mind, she explained her situation. "I have a... thing. I like to play the savior, especially for young boys who have gone astray. I always feel this urge to reach out and pull them back."
’So that’s it,’ Evan thought. ’A genuine savior complex.’
A flash of understanding crossed Evan Keller’s face, but he didn’t interrupt, instead listening to Yvette Yates’s entire story.
The Yates family was well-known and respected in the area. Her elders were all educators with many students.
Because of this, almost every year, the family would sponsor some poor but outstanding students to help them continue their education.
And some of those sponsored students, after completing their studies and finding success, would return each year with gifts to visit the family of their benefactors.
Having grown up in this environment, Yvette Yates also wanted to be someone’s savior.
But her path went astray.
She wanted to save young boys who had gone astray and gotten into the "business" at a young age.
She wanted to be on the receiving end of their worshipful gazes.
And the man who had just attacked her was the very first person Yvette Yates had paid to get out of one of those establishments.
The two young people were like dry tinder and a burning flame. As they spent more time together, they became boyfriend and girlfriend and even moved in together into the house where the attack took place.
But less than two years later, Yvette Yates discovered he was hooking up with other people on the side. He even shamelessly declared that since he was young and handsome, he should date around more. Maybe he’d land a rich older woman and never have to work a day in his life.
Yvette Yates broke up with him on the spot and moved on to her next relationship.
Soon after, she repeated the process, getting an even younger and more handsome boy out.
This new one was more obedient, more clingy.
"The reason I didn’t want you to come in earlier... was because my new, younger boyfriend was still inside.
And we were... um, dressed rather lightly."
