Seeing Zoe Sawyer’s enthusiastic look, Evan Keller was just about to let her tag along when a knock sounded at the office door.

Everyone looked toward the sound and saw the Chief standing there.

"Sawyer, you and Heath Hale, come here for a moment," the Chief said, beckoning to them.

After he spoke, the Chief glanced at Evan Keller, who was sitting off to the side, and said pointedly, "Get a move on. We don’t have much time."

Seeing this, Evan Keller gave up on the idea of having Zoe Sawyer join him. He grabbed the file and went to conduct the interrogation.

He also made sure to have his team bring in all the members of the Miller family and the perpetrator’s relatives.

Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale exchanged a confused look. ’What do they want us for? Is there some important job for us?’

Though they were confused, they both followed the Chief and soon arrived in his office.

Looking at the two people standing before his desk, the Chief mulled it over for a moment before speaking. "Sawyer, you don’t have any plans to start dating, do you? Or, to put it another way, is there anyone you’re interested in?"

Zoe Sawyer shook her head, looking puzzled. "Do video game characters count? If we’re including otome games, I could list ten."

The Chief was taken aback by her answer but quickly recovered.

"Not those. Never mind. It’s good that there isn’t anyone. When the time comes, you and Heath Hale will come with me." The Chief tapped the desk, having made his decision.

A flash of understanding crossed Heath Hale’s eyes, but Zoe Sawyer was still out of the loop. "Go where? Is there some kind of trip planned?"

"The Chief got promoted. He probably wants us to transfer with him," Heath Hale said, giving Zoe Sawyer a light, exasperated tap on the head.

Having cracked so many cases this year, it was about time for the Chief to get promoted.

"That’s right. Someone new will be taking over here at the Varden West Precinct soon. The new chief is arriving in a couple of days. I hear he specially hand-picked two handsome young lads from his own team to bring over. Said they need to get familiar with the environment first so they can hit the ground running." The Chief pouted, clearly displeased.

’So annoying. Does he really think no one can see through his little scheme?’

’Trying to use pretty boys to keep Zoe Sawyer here?’

’In his dreams!’

At this thought, the Chief shot Heath Hale a look of disdain. ’Useless man. Can’t even capture Zoe Sawyer’s heart.’

’If he could win her over, would I have to be this worried?’

’He has a prime opportunity and doesn’t even know how to use it!’

’Thank goodness Sawyer is still willing to come with me!’

With this thought, the Chief couldn’t help but inwardly curse Heath Hale again. ’Useless man!’

Heath Hale, who caught the Chief’s glare and understood exactly what it meant, looked completely helpless.

’You can’t force matters of the heart!’

Zoe Sawyer was no fool. She naturally picked up on the Chief’s underlying meaning and immediately said with a serious expression, "I promise you there’s no one. I want to keep working for you, Chief. But if I transfer, what about Evan Keller and Sean Hughes?"

’A new place... does that mean I’ll have to break in a whole new team of colleagues?’

Zoe Sawyer actually really liked the Varden West Precinct. Other bosses might not be as easygoing as the Chief, who gave them free rein to handle things their own way.

The thought of having to build rapport with new colleagues from scratch made Zoe Sawyer feel quite uneasy.

"Of course they’re coming with us. They’ll be officially assigned to your team. No matter what case or suspect you uncover, they’ll be in charge of handling it," the Chief said, tapping the desk as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Ever since Zoe Sawyer arrived, Evan Keller, Sean Hughes, and the others had barely had a break, solving one major case after another and catching countless criminals.

Their achievements were more than enough to earn them promotions long ago.

The only reason they were still here was that they had listened to Elder Crowe’s advice to rack up more credit, which would give them better leverage to make requests.

And now, case in point, he could bring all his trusted subordinates with him and even place them on Zoe Sawyer’s team.

"Oh, that’s good. That’s great." Hearing that she would still be working with people she knew, Zoe Sawyer patted her chest with a sigh of relief.

"All right, go and pack your things. It’ll be time to move right after the New Year holiday," the Chief said, waving his hand to dismiss Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale.

As he turned to leave, Heath Hale noticed the Chief make a "keep trying" gesture at him.

The corner of his mouth twitched. Pretending he hadn’t seen a thing, he followed right behind Zoe Sawyer out the door.

"Thank goodness you’ll all be there. If I had to go on assignment with a bunch of new people, I’d be completely on edge," Zoe Sawyer said, her voice laced with relief.

She understood that, at the end of the day, she was a registered police officer. Normally, she would have to obey transfers and follow orders.

But the thought of having to break in so many strangers from scratch still made Zoe Sawyer feel uneasy.

Heath Hale shook his head, patting Zoe Sawyer on the head. "Don’t worry," he said. "Your wishes are definitely the top priority."

If they were ever going to be forceful about her placement, she would have been sent to the provincial bureau from the very beginning, with an escort following her every move.

It might have been a case of imprinting. Ever since Zoe Sawyer discovered her abilities, Evan Keller and Sean Hughes had been the ones by her side, helping her handle everything.

Zoe Sawyer had instinctively grown to rely on them.

And given the leniency afforded to "special talents," no one had made any hard demands about where Zoe Sawyer had to be stationed.

"Come on, let’s go. I’m done thinking about it. Let’s go see what’s happening with Evan Keller," Zoe Sawyer said, quickly pushing the matter to the back of her mind.

’Anyway, I’ll still be working with people I know, my direct superior will still be the Chief, and Heath Hale, Beau, and the others will be coming too.’

’I have nothing to worry about. I might as well go watch Evan Keller’s interrogation. Maybe I’ll even learn something.’

Heath Hale didn’t continue the conversation, instead falling into step just behind Zoe Sawyer in a protective stance.

When the two of them got there, they saw Sean Hughes walking out of one of the rooms.

"How did it go? Did he talk?" Zoe Sawyer asked excitedly, her gaze fixed on Second Brother Miller inside the room.

Sean Hughes nodded, his tone light. "We got it. These guys are real cowards. We just told them we had a video of their transaction, and they spilled everything."

They confessed every step in detail, from formulating the plan and hiring someone, to the final act of hitting the victim with the car.

First Brother Miller’s wife was a much tougher nut to crack, but it didn’t matter when her own husband sold her out.

Once she knew her husband had told them everything, she lost the will to keep hiding it and confessed to it all.

Judging from their statements, the group hadn’t lied.

Still, it was a good thing it was resolved so easily!

"Good, that’s one down. Now all that’s left is Evan Keller’s side. I wonder how he’s doing," Zoe Sawyer said, turning her gaze toward the other interrogation room.

Right on cue, Evan Keller’s voice drifted out.

"Talk. What’s this about the slow poisoning?"
