Chapter 989 - 992: Not Someone to Be Messed With

The silhouettes of several men disappeared, and Selina Sloan pulled Melody Thorne out of the fitting room.

"How did you know these people were following me?" Melody Thorne asked in confusion.

Selina Sloan’s gaze grew deeper, and instinct told her that Selina Sloan wasn’t that simple.

"They’ve been following you the whole time, so I guessed that’s the case. Miss Thorne, you’d better be careful next time you go out. I noticed those men in black suits were well-trained, and they seem to be targeting you specifically. They probably aren’t to be trifled with."

"Okay, thank you for today. I’ll have someone look into it."

Back at the Quinn Family’s residence,

Jared Quinn and Harold Chapman were discussing something in the study when Melody Thorne came in and made two cups of tea.

"What are you talking about?"

There was a painting on Jared Quinn’s desk, handcrafted. Melody Thorne found it somewhat familiar, "What is this again?"

It looked a lot like the item that Weston Hawthorne had given her when he died.

"This is the military token of The Hawthorne Family’s private army. With it, one can command The Hawthorne Family’s private army. Right now, The Hawthorne Family is searching for it everywhere. Unfortunately, it seems Weston Hawthorne deliberately didn’t leave it to his descendants, and it disappeared without a trace," Harold Chapman explained.

Melody Thorne "..."

The more she looked at the shape, the more it resembled The Hawthorne Family’s military token. Could it really be such a coincidence?

She had saved Weston Hawthorne on the mountain that day, and he gave it to her as he was dying?

What did Weston Hawthorne mean by that?

No, it must have been a fake, right?

"What’s wrong?" Jared Quinn ruffled her hair with his large hand, "Why do you have that expression? Are you feeling unwell?"

"No, I was just thinking, if it’s possible to create a fake, could it still be used?"

"No, this military token can command The Hawthorne Family’s army, but every time it’s used, it goes through a unique verification process to determine its authenticity, so even a fake wouldn’t work."

"Then how do you determine whether it’s real or fake?"

"We’re not quite sure either. Only Weston Hawthorne knew, and there might be an adjutant with the surname Chaucer who knows as well."

"Oh."

Melody Thorne put down the paper, her heart pounding. No, she had to confirm with Adjutant Chaucer. This matter was too terrifying — with a simple mistake, she could end up holding an entire army in her hands!

"Go back to the bedroom and rest for a while. I’ll call you for dinner later," Jared Quinn thought she was unwell.

Melody Thorne walked out of the study, her mind racing, "What if I really have such a military token in my hand?"

Jared Quinn "...go sleep."

Harold Chapman chuckled, "Sister-in-law, this military token isn’t a toy to be played with. The army it commands could frighten the entire underworld, let alone if it falls into outsiders’ hands. If The Hawthorne Family knew it fell into an outsider’s hands, they’d likely kill that person without hesitation."

Melody Thorne "...I better go to sleep."

She closed the bedroom door, retrieved that item from the drawer, along with Adjutant Chaucer’s business card. She had thought it was something valuable and had casually tossed it in with her jewelry.

"Miss Thorne," Adjutant Chaucer’s voice came from inside.

"Hello, Adjutant Chaucer, there’s something I need to clarify. What exactly was the item that Mr. Hawthorne personally handed to me that day?"
