Chapter 475 - 307: Interviewing Jiangg Ning? Chen Yuan’s Background Revealed (2)
If Jiangg Ning hadn’t already struck out at so many other companies, she never would have come here.
After all, Lanjing wasn’t a big city, and there weren’t many well-known companies in the industry. Bauhinia Investment Company’s salary and benefits were considered absolutely top-tier; she really should have given it a shot.
But when Jiangg Ning was first considering her options, she had ruled out Bauhinia Company. She knew it was a holding company under the Jiang Group, and if she worked here, malicious gossips might say the Jiangg Family was trying to ride the coattails of the Jiang Group.
Jiangg Ruxue had previously told her to greet her seniors at a cocktail party, so coming to this company would have inadvertently fulfilled her mother’s wishes.
In truth, Jiangg Ning had a rebellious streak and didn’t want to do as her mother wished.
But there was no helping it. There weren’t many good companies left to choose from if she wanted to stay in Lanjing, and she shouldn’t let her pique get in the way of something as important as her career.
Cheng Ya’s cousin had interviewed here before and was easily rejected. Jiangg Ning believed she was more than qualified, and she gave herself a silent pep talk.
She clenched her small fists in the car.
Grabbing her resume, Jiangg Ning pushed open the car door and stepped out. The CLICK-CLACK of her high heels echoed in the empty underground garage.
...
"I told you not to drag me into things like this again. Just coordinate between your departments. How much friction can there possibly be? Make concessions where you should, get done what needs to be done, and smooth things over with the subordinates. He’s a capable man; shouldn’t they listen to his orders?"
"I did," Pei Youwen said helplessly. "The strategy department just doesn’t want to let go easily. After all, they’ve been rushing on that project for two months."
"This is the only time. Don’t let it happen again."
Chen Yuan took a deep breath. Dressed in a formal suit, he strode through the corridor. Describing him as "strikingly gallant" would be no exaggeration.
Power really did cultivate a certain aura.
As the chairman, he was becoming increasingly familiar with his company. He was a young, hardworking prodigy, and with his handsome face, he perfectly matched the sharp, ambitious spirit of Bauhinia Company’s young workforce.
He and Pei Youwen had just left Ji Hai’s office.
Pei had previously guaranteed that once Ji Hai was on board, he would make all his departments and employees cooperate fully with his work, with everyone working together for the company’s benefit.
But it had only been three days since he started, and a project was already having problems. Subordinates were deliberately making things difficult for Ji Hai, stubbornly insisting they wouldn’t pause the project or release the funds without a personally signed document from Pei. They were basically just shirking responsibility and playing dumb.
Ji Hai couldn’t stand it and went to Pei Youwen, but Pei was unwilling to be harsh and order his subordinates around, which is why a meeting had to be called. Everyone was dissatisfied with this leader who had been parachuted in.
Only Chen Yuan and his circle knew that this top talent had been transferred from headquarters in Northern Europe. He had real skills and knowledge. It was normal for capable people to be a bit arrogant, and that was probably the source of the conflict.
Pei Youwen went to apologize but got the cold shoulder, so he dragged Chen Yuan over to swallow his pride and clean up the mess.
With that matter settled, Chen Yuan wasn’t in the best of moods. He walked all the way back to his top-floor office, planning to take a good rest.
Inside the quiet office, Chen Yuan was all alone.
At two in the afternoon, he had to go to the finance department for new employee interviews. The recruitment process was nearing its end. After a grueling mass selection, Mo Nana and the interviewers had picked out several high-caliber candidates with excellent resumes, filling almost all the vacancies.
A few more rounds of screening, and the previous mistakes could be rectified. With an injection of fresh blood, the lifeless department could also be revived.
Chen Yuan took a sip of tea, signing documents while wondering if he should head back early after he was done. If Ningning was off today, he could spend some time with her.
When he left this morning, Jiangg Ning had mysteriously told him that his nineteenth birthday present was ready and would be revealed on the day itself.
At this thought, a sweet smile spread across his face. The cold facade he had put on instantly melted away, and a youthful air, filled with the joy of being in love, finally emerged.
In three days, he would turn nineteen.
「Two in the afternoon.」
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. The sound of knocking came from the door, and Pei Youwen, still wearing his trademark glasses, poked his head in.
"Chairman Jiang, it’s time for the interviews. The people downstairs are waiting for you, and Mo Nana and the other interviewers are ready too."
"Okay."
CLICK.
Chen Yuan capped his pen and slowly stood up. He adjusted the buttons on his suit jacket, his tousled hair resting lazily on his forehead.
A kid trying to act cool is usually a boring sight, but thankfully, Chen Yuan was handsome. So when he put on a straight face, the formal suit made him look the part.
Chen Yuan had gone through similar interviews countless times and knew the routine by heart.
He walked out of his office and down the corridor. The rhythmic tap of his heels echoed on the floor, its polished surface reflecting the deep black of his jacket. A new depth appeared in the young man’s eyes.
As usual, Chen Yuan led the way. A group of the company’s most powerful people followed him, all dressed in formal suits. The procession was incredibly intimidating to behold.
No one thought this interview would be any different from the usual—the same questions, the same neat room with rows of chairs along the wall. Chen Yuan thought so too. He appeared cold on the surface, but as he walked, the nineteen-year-old chairman was wondering if he should take a detour on the way home to buy some cream puffs for Ningning and Yaoyao.
It was a perfectly unremarkable day.
But fate is a tangled web of chance and connection. If anything was to blame, it was that Lanjing was too small. And within this small city, Chen Yuan and Jiangg Ning were always attracting and drawing closer to one another.
From teacher and student, to... the workplace.
Chen Yuan descended to the third floor and rounded a corner of the corridor. His gaze was fixed straight ahead, not sparing a single glance for the interview candidates to the side.
Just as on previous occasions, the overwhelming presence of the approaching group forced the candidates to sit bolt upright. Their eyes followed Chen Yuan and the people behind him, and they felt an incomparable pressure.
But among the crowd of onlookers, there was one person whose delicate eyes flashed with disbelief, her pupils contracting sharply.
She stood out among the dozens of candidates, yet she failed to catch Chen Yuan’s eye.
Chen Yuan walked right past her and pushed open the door to the room. The group then filed in after him.
Nearby, the others whispered amongst themselves, but she alone sat in silence.
Inside, however, a tempest was raging!
This person was Jiangg Ning.
She had arrived on the third floor half an hour ago. At first, she waited in the lobby. By the time an interviewer came down to call them, it was already past two. Jiangg Ning went up with the others, found a seat, and listened to everyone discuss how strict the interview would be. Rumor had it the pass rate was only three percent.
Ningning was silently cheering herself on. She had been through many high-pressure situations and wasn’t afraid. In fact, she was rather curious to see just how terrifying this interview would be.
But at this very moment, the process hadn’t even begun, yet she could hear her own heart thundering like a drum.
THUMP THUMP.
THUMP THUMP THUMP.
And it was still accelerating at an unimaginable speed.
Jiangg Ning couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Her boyfriend, the man she loved, the very same Chen who had left the house at eight in the morning, had just walked right past her. He was wearing a suit, standing at the head of everyone, and entering the room where she was about to be interviewed—as a leader.
’What in the world is going on?’
For a moment, Jiangg Ning’s brain simply shut down.
Her mind was flooded with questions.
’Didn’t Chen just find some random part-time job at a company? Why is he here? And he looks like he holds a high position...’
’No...’
Then, an even more terrifying thought appeared in her mind.
’Don’t tell me... Chen is going to be the one interviewing me?’
When this idea popped into her head, Jiangg Ning instantly found it hard to stay seated. To say she felt like she was on pins and needles would be no exaggeration.
