Chapter 1040 - 1042: Camp Fire Scalers
The fresh scent of wyvern spread through the camp. Soldiers just stood there, watching Damon and the two young ladies.
They had killed and now were eating a wyvern at the sixth class like it was nothing.
“Can you pass me the sauce” Evangeline said, pointing at a bottle next to Damon. He waved his hand and shadows slid the bottle across the ground toward her.
“They’re monsters, actual monsters.”
“I’ve heard the Ascendants are strong but they are stronger than I thought.”
“Hmph you newbies haven’t seen anything yet they are far more powerful than that.”
Damon didn’t even look in the direction of the soldiers. This was a way for them to blow off steam and rest up from the mental and physical toll the battlefield takes on them.
The battlefield had a way of bringing out the worst in every person. It had a way of dragging out the beast in man.
Any semblance of order you know gets reduced to the lost primordial rules.
The rules of violence.
Here men cried out to anything to save them.
That didn’t change even in the past.
In the past people would call out to the gods to save them. Depending on the region they had different lesser gods they worshipped.
The soldiers in their camps could talk. Damon didn’t mind so he merely listened to their conversation.
Soon it devolved into an argument on who was the strongest of the Ascendants.
For whatever reason Damon wasn’t mentioned at all.
“Shut up we all know lady Leona is the best she can make enemies explode in a flash.” someone stood up and pointed at another soldier.
“Nonsense so what if she can. Lady Evangeline can heal and do all that stuff and she can fly and move at the speed of light.”
“No she can’t she’s fast and she uses light magic but that doesn’t mean she can. In order to move at light speed your body needs to be at the seventh class at least as matter can not maintain a solid form at light speed.” a knight with glasses argued back, pushing them up his nose.
A scruffy man scoffed, raising a hand.
“But but magic.. so everything goes.”
The argument got more heated and devolved into stating their feats in battle and physical stats.
Damon found the whole thing amusing.
“Ahhh power scalers you find them anywhere.” Ashcroft’s mocking voice echoed in his head.
The word power scalers was a first for him so he just assumed Ashcroft made it up.
“I see what all of you are saying but personally I would say lady Sylvia is the best. Her powers are way better and honestly I’ve never seen her take any damage.” a young woman’s voice argued between them.
They stopped then turned to her.
“You mean she has no feats…”
“Sounds like a fraud to me…”
“No way her potential is—”
“Is what” someone cut her off.
“Always will be but never is. She has a legendary understanding of magic but never uses it. Zero feats.”
Damon didn’t even know what to say. He wasn’t sure if he should be angry on Sylvia’s behalf.
He wanted to speak when Ashcroft spoke.
“Its better not to do anything. If you talk they’ll drag you into the quagmire of endless power scaling debate. Suddenly you’ll find your night and brain cells wasted talking about realms of power you have zero understanding of and devolve into full time live action role play.”
Damon felt as if Ashcroft was telling him a traumatizing experience.
“Yeah whatever I don’t even care.” he said that aloud.
Which made Leona laugh a little, covering her mouth with the back of her hand.
“Don’t worry about that. Its the same in other camps. The troops like to praise their leaders while scaling down other camps leaders. They don’t mean any disrespect.”
It felt like she was trying to defend them.
Damon shook his head.
“It’s alright I don’t mind at all as long as everyone here knows Xander Ravenscroft is a bum.”
“Wow Xander really catching a stray on his honey moon to boot.” Leona gulped down her drink.
“I’ll be sure to pass the word around.”
Evangeline didn’t say anything. She just kept looking at him. Then she crossed her arms tightly over her chest.
“You’re really not going to tell me your plan to deal with the great dragon aren’t you.”
He shook his head slowly.
“I want to say I dont trust you at all but that would be a lie. I’m not telling you because…”
He watched her face go through several expressions before adding with a smirk.
“I do not have a plan. Not a one. Nothing. I actually came here on hopes and prayers hoping I would get lucky but with my luck I figured I’d be leaving here half dead.”
Evangeline really wanted to get angry. In fact she was angry. But she couldn’t because she knew the morale of the troops was at an all time high due to Damon being here.
She really hated the bastard and she hated that she loved him too but one thing that couldn’t be denied was he had a win rate no one could match.
He was adaptable and quick on his feet.
Well as long as he was decisive unless he wasn’t and that would be trouble but he seemed like he had made up his mind so she didn’t have to worry.
“Let me guess I’m important to this plan of yours that you don’t have.”
“Yep thats right. You being here could mean life or death for us.”
“So you have a plan then” Leona asked.
“No I do not. I’ll make one as I go.”
Evangeline rolled her eyes and stood up, brushing dust off her clothes.
“I’m going to rest, you guys have first watch.”
With that she left without getting into a fight with Damon.
He gasped and leaned forward.
“Wha.. where are you going. Get back here young lady. Get angry at me. Fight me. You cant just give up. Why are you acting so mature…”
Her eyes twitched but she refused to be dragged down to his level.
“Did.. did you get fat” he added.
She stopped mid step. A flash of gold burst from her hand and Damon was hit square in the head.
Evangeline went to bed fuming.
