My Living Shadow System Devours To Make Me Stronger

Chapter 1041 - 1043: Shadow Prison

Their march continued for a few days, reaching upper into the forest. The process was simple. Fight and kill the horrors. Burn the forest. Plant runes. Then advance.

The process was simple on paper but harder to carry out than ever.

The horrors born in the forest were strong and each area was a new problem. The forest could displace people, curse them, corrupt them, infect them, among many horrible things.

And the smoke mixed with the mist created a foul toxin in the air. Its effects differed from person to person.

Damon watched his system panel as he walked. He had missed a lot, but he had been feeding his shadow with all the countless corpses here and his stats were higher than ever, not that weak monsters gave him much.

Overall Damon had grown greatly.

[Description]

“I want to see the outside, mother may I go,” unknown asked.

“My dear, the outside world is too small for you and still too vast,” his mother had said, her long silver hair falling past her large wings.

Why did his mother turn this small wish of his into such a cryptic answer.

“I want to see what lies beyond the crystal palace. I wish to spread my wings, they have grown stiff staying here,” he replied softly, for he did not wish to hurt his mother with his words.

“My dear unknown, if it is your wish to spread your wings then a new sky I shall create for you and I will fill it with countless galaxies so you may spread your wings.” Her smile was gentle and warm.

Unknown understood she was saying no once more.

“Why do all my siblings come and go as they please and still I watch the outside world through a looking glass.”

He felt his wrath rise with his words. He never forgot the silence. She did not reply. Only later did he understand.

“The outside world is too small for you and still too vast,” she whispered as if she had wronged him.

“Why is it so. Tell me.”

“You are too big for the outside and still so frail that it can hurt you. It can taint your beauty. The resentment of many will break you. Stay here with your mother for I am only capable of loving you.”

“You can’t keep me here forever. I will not be here forever.”

I never forgot how she looked away. I just did not understand.

“This place is a prison.”

My words broke her heart. I did not understand.

I am free and I walk where I please, still my heart longs for the confines of home and the warmth I once called my prison.

[Effect]

This grants you the ability to imprison the shadow and body of your target, corroding their will until they desire no more to leave.

This was just one of the skills in Damon’s arsenal. However this would do nothing against Ashergon and Damon knew that, so he had something else in mind.

Damon had read over that passage over and over again after he woke up and still he did not quite understand the words.

The outside world is too small for you and still too vast.

The person in the passage talking to his mother was clearly Unknown and he was lamenting a memory of his past.

And his mother seemed to have her own difficulties.

The outside world was too small for him because he was the Unknown God. It was vast because the Unknown God had a peculiarity about him.

And it was what made him terrifying.

The Unknown God could feel and live through the pain of anyone and everyone. It was like seeing life from someone’s perspective, but only for people who had gone through the worst things imaginable.

All their pain. Their sadness. Their resentment.

At least that was how Ashcroft had explained it to him.

Perhaps it was why he wished to end all of these things, but it was cruel to take only the things he did not like away.

For that reason he was removing everything.

Truly he was fighting against cruelty, pain, and suffering. That was his choice.

“But what about us,” Damon whispered as he walked.

“What about our choice. Do we not have the right to suffer, the right to resent.”

He was talking to himself, but Ashcroft in his mind could hear him.

Then he answered.

“Yes. I once asked him the same thing and his response was.

“Regret is a cruel teacher and a hypocritical storyteller. It shows you what could have been and convinces you there was another choice, that you could go back and change everything. It denies what is. You cannot. And so we regret.

Damon was quiet. He had no answer for that reply. He bit his lip and when he raised his head he spotted a wide area of the forest with several massive war engines being constructed.

Other divisions were moving in and helping with the construction of what would be a massive fort.

Evangeline stepped up beside him, her boots crunching ash as her eyes took in the scene ahead.

“We’re here,” she muttered.
