Chapter 113| First Easy Point
Chapter 113: Chapter 113| First Easy Point
Reeves feinted left.
Cole committed.
Reeves went right.
Past Cole. Past the interception. Two steps from the zone boundary.
Nyx appeared from his right.
She didn’t need to touch him.
She read the kinetic force of his approach. The direction, the momentum, the committed trajectory and redirected it. Not back at him. Sideways. The specific precision of someone who had caught a moving person’s force vector and simply changed its direction.
Reeves went sideways instead of forward.
Stumbled. Recovered. But he was three meters from where he’d been pointing and the zone boundary was still intact.
He looked at Nyx.
She looked back.
"Interesting," he said.
She said nothing, just stared at him in a focused expression.
Zane watched from his position.
’Kinetic Force in a live engagement,’ he thought. ’She doesn’t fight the opponent’s movement. She files it and reroutes it. Cole committed to an intercept and Reeves went around him. Nyx didn’t need to intercept anything, she just changed where Reeves ended up.’
’Running that alongside Impact Breaker,’ he thought. ’Generate force with one hand. Redirect counter-force with the other.’
’That’s a complete system,’ he thought.
The system surfaced.
『 The system concurs. The host has identified the tactical compatibility accurately. The system notes acquisition at current familiarity would produce 40% output, sufficient for basic redirection but below the ceiling this Sigil is capable of. 』
’40% Kinetic Force,’ he thought. ’Barely worth the slot at that ceiling. I’d be redirecting at less than half of what she’s producing right now.’ He watched Nyx reset her stance across the zone boundary. ’When I take it I want it at a level that actually means something. Not a watered down version of what I just watched.’
’We wait,’ he thought.
Then Nyx repositioned.
Moving laterally along the zone boundary, reading Team B’s new formation and adjusting Team A’s defensive line accordingly. The repositioning carried her directly through Zane’s position.
She moved past him.
Close.
The aura range catching her at full proximity for the first time in a live context.
The system surfaced immediately.
『 NYX HALE — full proximity confirmed 』
『 ACQUISITION PROMPT ACTIVE 』
『 Kinetic Force — B-rank — acquire now? 』
He looked at her as she moved past.
The dark hair. The pale skin, her big boobs juggling in rythm n of her movements. The Kinetic Force running at whatever output she was choosing in a live drill. The specific way she moved, not like someone fighting the environment, like someone reading it.
’Not yet,’ he thought.
『 Confirmed. Prompt dismissed. 』
Nyx stopped beside him at the new position.
Looked at the floor map.
"They’re going to push the left flank next," she said quietly. "Sera’s been redirecting their heat signatures toward the left for the last ninety seconds. She’s moving them without them knowing she’s moving them."
Zane looked at the left flank.
Maren was there.
He looked at Nyx.
"You can read that from heat signatures?"
"I can read kinetic force patterns," she said. "The way people move when they’re being directed versus when they’re choosing. Different signature." A glance at him. "Sera is a good field director. But she’s been doing it long enough that the pattern is visible if you know what to look for."
He looked at her.
’18% familiarity,’ he thought. ’And she’s giving me tactical intelligence in the middle of a live drill like it’s a training conversation.’
The system surfaced.
『 Nyx Hale — Familiarity +2% 』
『 Current: 20% — Stranger tier 』
『 System Note: Genuine tactical cooperation in a live context. The system notes this is exactly the kind of interaction that builds familiarity efficiently. 』
"Maren," Zane called across the zone.
She looked back.
"Left flank. They’re coming."
She looked at the left boundary. Then back at him. A single nod.
Activated Overdrive.
The push came thirty seconds later.
Trace Carter Team B activated Gravity Manipulation, not at a person, at the zone boundary itself. The gravitational pull increased along the left edge, making approach from Team A’s side heavier and slower while Team B’s push came from neutral gravity territory.
Maren hit it at full Overdrive output.
Her C-rank burst sequence cutting through the gravitational differential with the speed that full chain activation produced. Fast enough that Trace’s gravity pull didn’t have time to fully register on her movement before she was already through the affected zone and at the boundary line.
She met Reid Cross Team B at the boundary line.
A-rank output against C-rank output.
Reid raised his hand.
The temperature around the boundary line dropped immediately. Not gradually, just a sudden shift in the air quality that Zane felt from his position across the zone. Frost spreading across the composite floor from Reid’s palm outward in a clean radius. The specific visual of Absolute Zero at A-rank doing what A-rank output did, not suggesting cold, enforcing it.
Maren hit the frost line at full Overdrive.
Her boots found less grip than expected. The burst sequence carrying her through it but not cleanly. The frost affecting her footing in the half second before she adjusted her approach angle.
Reid pressed forward. Ice forming along the boundary line as a partial barrier. Not a full wall, just enough to create a contested surface that C-rank speed had to work around rather than through.
Neither of them broke the advantage for more than two seconds before adjusting.
Zane activated both.
Impact Breaker — C-rank equivalent 50% output. Overdrive — B-rank 10%.
He moved to Maren’s support position.
The combination running clean. The floor under him reading differently from Dario’s surface manipulation. The terrain noise working in Team A’s favour as much as Sera’s thermal map. He reached Maren’s position as Reid was setting for a second exchange.
Reid looked at him.
Then at the way he’d just crossed the floor.
Something registered in Reid’s expression that wasn’t entirely about the drill.
Zane pressed his palm flat.
Impact Breaker — controlled output. The shockwave rolling through the floor between them. Not at Reid directly, at the composite surface under his feet. The density shift from Dario’s manipulation amplifying the wave’s effect on the terrain.
Reid’s footing shifted from the shockwave running through Dario’s manipulated floor. One step back, two, the frost under his boots finding uneven composite beneath it and losing the grip it had been using as a foundation. The ice cracked along the boundary line where the wave had passed through it.
Three steps back.
Past the boundary line.
Into the unmarked zone between the two sides.
Zone control transferred to Team A the moment Reid’s foot crossed the line. A player out of their zone counted as a point of control lost. The drill rules were clear on that. Reyes had been watching from the floor and had clocked the crossing immediately.
"Phase one — Team A." She called it cleanly. "One point."
Zane stepped back from the boundary.
Looked at his hands.
Then at Nyx who had appeared beside him again without announcement.
She was looking at the floor where his shockwave had run.
"You hit the floor," she said. "Not him."
"It was more efficient," Zane said.
She looked at him.
"With Earth Manipulation already active on the surface." A pause. "You read Dario’s output and used it."
"Yes, play according to your surroundings". He said, throwing a shallow smirk.
She filed it.
Looked at Team B regrouping across the floor.
"Phase two starts in thirty seconds," she said. "Sera is going to change her approach. She knows the floor is compromised now."
"What do you think she’ll do," Zane said.
Nyx looked at him.
Something in her expression, not the full calculation, something more direct.
"She’ll go herself," Nyx said. "She’s been directing from the back because she didn’t need to move. Now she does."
Zane looked across the floor at Sera Dunne.
Third place trials. A-rank Heat Sense. The lunch table version of her completely absent from the person standing on the opposite side of the zone boundary right now.
’Heatwave,’ he thought.
’Phase two is going to be different, Trust the A ranks are using this as rehearsals’
Instructor Reyes raised her hand.
