Chapter 112| Doubled Force on Return
Chapter 112: Chapter 112| Doubled Force on Return
Zane registered it coming.
Then Nyx moved.
She stepped forward one pace. Both arms came up. Her palms facing the incoming wave with the specific stance of someone who had done this exact thing enough times that it had become a default position.
The Pressure Wave hit her range.
And stopped.
Not blocked, caught. The specific visual of kinetic force arriving at a destination and finding someone already holding it.
Then Nyx turned her palms outward.
The wave went back.
Doubled.
Ryan’s expression in the half second before his own output returned to him at twice the force said everything that needed to be said about what Kinetic Force looked like in a live engagement. He dove sideways. The redirected wave hit the floor where he’d been standing and sent composite dust in a clean arc across Team B’s zone.
Zane stared.
His thoughts were already categorizing. Filing the output, the mechanics, the specific way she’d held the force before redirecting it. The mental index updating in real time.
’Who would’ve thought her ability extended to this extent,’ he thought. ’I’ve been watching her in corridors and water dispensers and I never fully clocked what she was actually carrying.’
The system surfaced.
『 Kinetic Force — live output confirmed. Detection range: approximately 7 meters from host position. Redirection precision: high. Force doubled on return from B-rank threshold input. Acquisition prompt available on host command. 』
’Not yet,’ he thought.
『 Understood. The system is patient. 』
Who would’ve thought,’ he thought. ’I’ve been busy admiring her hair, figure and her womanly presence. Completely missed what she was actually carrying.’
The system surfaced.
『 The system notes the host used the word admiring. The system is not judging. 』
’Don’t,’ he thought.
『 The system is simply logging vocabulary choices. 』
Team B regrouped fast. Sera hadn’t moved from her position, she didn’t need to. Heat Sense at A-rank meant she already knew where every person on Team A was standing through their thermal signatures. She was directing her team quietly from the back with the specific calm of someone who could see the whole board and was simply telling people where to be.
Zane clocked it.
’She’s been running the field since phase one started,’ he thought. ’She doesn’t need to be in front. She just needs to see everything.’
He looked at Maren on his left.
She was already running Overdrive at minimum output. The pre-activation warmup she did before committing to a burst sequence. Her eyes were on Sera across the floor. The specific focused expression of someone who had been placed third in trials and had a direct opinion about being read by a thermal map.
"She can see us." Maren’s voice was quiet. Not panicking. Just noting it the way she noted everything. "All of us. The whole time."
Zane looked across the floor at Sera’s position. Still near the back. Still calm. Still directing her team with the economy of someone who already knew where everyone was going before they moved.
"Heat signatures," he said. "She doesn’t need line of sight."
Maren glanced at him sideways. "So we’re already cooked."
"Not yet." He looked at the floor between the zones. "She reads what’s already producing a signature. She can’t read what isn’t there yet."
Maren followed his eyes to the floor.
A brief moment.
She then glanced at him. "You have something," she said. Not a question."So what do we do?".
He looked at the floor between the two zones. The space between Team A’s boundary and Team B’s boundary. The specific geography of Arena Two that Sera’s Heat Sense had already mapped completely.
’She can see heat signatures,’ he thought. ’She knows where we are. She knows how fast we’re moving. She knows when Overdrive activates because it produces heat.’
’But she reads what’s already there,’ he thought. ’She can’t read what isn’t producing a signature yet.’
He looked at Dario Marsh on the right flank.
"Dario," he said quietly. "Can you harden the floor between the zones."
Dario looked at him. "How much."
"Enough that movement across it changes. Uneven surface. Not enough to stop anyone. Just enough to make Heat Sense read the terrain differently from the people on it."
Dario looked at the floor. Then back at Zane.
’He’s processing it,’ Zane thought. ’Earth Manipulation — the same Sigil that locked Maren’s legs and my torso in the previous drill and ended the round before either of us could adjust. If he can manipulate the composite floor the same way he manipulated the platform surface. Different density readings, irregular terrain. Sera’s thermal map gets noise in it. She reads heat signatures not material density. The two aren’t the same thing.’
Dario nodded once.
Pressed his hand to the floor.
The composite surface between the zones shifted subtly. Not visibly dramatic, just the specific texture change of material that had been uniform becoming variable. Ridges. Density pockets. The kind of terrain irregularity that showed up differently under a thermal scan than a flat surface.
Across the floor Sera’s expression changed slightly.
Just slightly.
’She felt it,’ Zane thought. ’The floor changed and her read changed with it.’
’Good,’ he thought.
The system surfaced.
『 Haha. 』
Zane looked at the notification.
’Did you just laugh at me,’ he thought.
『 The system notes the host’s assessment is incorrect. Heat Sense reads thermal body signatures, not material density. Dario’s floor manipulation has zero effect on Sera’s thermal map. She can still see every person on this floor clearly regardless of terrain irregularity. The system found the host’s confidence amusing. 』
He looked at Sera across the floor.
Her expression was just an irregularity after all.
Team B pushed again.
Reeves Dash B team activated Flashstep.
The speed was immediate. The B-rank output carrying him across the floor in a burst that closed half the zone gap before Zane had fully registered the activation. Not Overdrive speed, a totally different architecture entirely. Pure translocation rather than enhanced movement.
He was heading for the zone boundary directly.
Cole Brennan A team moved to intercept. Titan Fist activated, the specific mass concentration that turned a standard punch into something that dented composite surfaces. He planted himself in Reeves’ path.
