Chapter 114: Chapter 114| Sera’s Heat

PHASE TWO — 5:00

Reyes dropped her hand.

The timer clicked down.

Team B didn’t wait.

Sera moved.

Not directing from the back this time, forward. Past Ryan, past Reid, past Trace. Crossing into the neutral zone with the specific purposeful energy of someone who had spent phase one building a complete picture of the floor and had decided phase two required her on it personally.

Zane watched her come.

He envisioned the lunch table version of her, olive green hoodie, stolen fries, that settled unbothered expression. Gone. Completely. This was a different person wearing the same face. Focused eyes. The composed energy of a third place trial prodigy moving across Arena Two like she owned the thermal reading rights to every heat signature in the building.

’Heatwave,’ he thought. ’There she is.’

The system surfaced.

『 Sera Dunne — Heat Sense active — A-rank output confirmed 』

『 System Note: The host is now facing an opponent who can see everyone on this floor simultaneously at A-rank output. The system notes this is not the cafeteria version. 』

’No,’ he thought. ’It’s not.’

PHASE TWO — 4:41

Sera raised her hand.

No warning. No buildup. Just raised it. Palm forward.

Heat Emission fired at Maren.

Not a probe. Not a test shot. Full A-rank output from the first activation.

The burst hit Maren’s position before Maren had time to complete her Overdrive sequence. The sudden heat spike precise, concentrated, A-rank calibrated, hit her thermal regulation like a wall. The disorientation window opened immediately.

Maren’s chain sequence broke.

One step sideways. Footing compromised. The burst had landed exactly where Sera’s thermal read said it would land and it had landed correctly.

Maren reset fast, faster than most C-rank operators could manage. But the exchange had already ended. Sera had fired once and the result was already filed.

She looked at Maren across the distance. Throwing an intimidating smirk as if a she was toying with her.

Then looked away.

Moving to the next target.

Zane stared.

’One shot,’ he thought. ’One burst at controlled A-rank output and Maren’s sequence broke completely.’ He looked at Sera across the floor. ’And that wasn’t even full output. She’s calibrating enough to disrupt without injuring. Full output would have put Maren on the medical floor.’

The system surfaced.

『 System Note: Sera Dunne is running Heat Emission at approximately 40-50% of A-rank ceiling. Sufficient for drill disruption. The system notes full A-rank Heat Emission output in an enclosed space would be a significant hazard to all participants including teammates. She is being precise. Not restrained. Precise. 』

’There’s a difference,’ Zane thought.

『 The system notes the host is learning to read the distinction. Progress. 』

’That’s the ceiling difference,’ he thought. ’C-rank speed against A-rank precision. Maren is fast. Sera doesn’t need to be faster. She just needs to know where fast is going before it gets there.’

PHASE TWO — 4:15

Maren reset and tried again.

Overdrive at full output. Different angle this time. Cutting left before committing to the forward burst. Breaking her own movement pattern deliberately.

Sera tracked it.

Heat Emission fired at the projected position, not where Maren was, where she was going. The A-rank read predicting the sequence continuation with the specific precision of someone who had been reading thermal movement patterns since before this drill started.

The burst landed.

Maren cut direction mid-sequence.

Too late.

The disorientation hit her right shoulder. Not a full landing, a glancing contact. Enough to throw the chain sequence timing off by half a second. Maren recovered but the burst sequence died before completion.

She pulled back to Team A’s zone.

Looked at Zane.

He looked at her.

"She’s reading my heat trail," Maren said quietly. The flat analytical version of her voice. Not panicking, just processing.

"Overdrive produces a different thermal signature than your baseline," Zane said. "She knows when you’re activating before the burst hits speed."

Maren looked at Sera across the floor.

"So I can’t use Overdrive against her directly."

"Not at full sequence buildup," he said. "She sees the activation coming."

A pause.

"Dead stop," Maren said. More to herself than him.

He looked at her.

’She’s already working out the counter,’ he thought. ’Don’t interfere.’

PHASE TWO — 3:28

Maren moved again.

Full Overdrive. Rapid sequence. The burst carrying her forward at speed that had placed her eighteenth in trials — fast enough that even A-rank thermal tracking had to work to keep the projection accurate at full movement speed.

Sera fired.

Maren cut.

The burst missed.

Then — dead stop. Mid-sequence. Complete. The specific move of someone who had decided the pattern needed to break entirely.

Sera’s next burst fired at the projected continuation.

Empty floor.

Maren activated from the dead stop — no sequence buildup, just immediate full output from stationary. The burst carrying her forward at an angle Sera’s projection hadn’t fully accounted for.

She crossed half the neutral zone.

Sera stepped back.

Their eyes met across the closing distance.

Something passed between them, the specific mutual acknowledgment of two people who had revised their ceiling estimate of the other upward simultaneously.

Then Reid — Team B — stepped forward.

Absolute Zero activating — the temperature dropping in a sharp contained radius. Frost spreading across the floor in front of Maren’s approach vector. A-rank output making the frost line significantly more aggressive than anything C-rank cold generation produced.

Maren hit the frost line.

Her footing went immediately. The burst sequence carrying her into the affected zone before she could pull back. She went down on one knee, not out of the zone, but stopped. The frost consumed the momentum completely.

She pushed back up.

But the approach was dead.

Reid looked at her from behind the frost line.

She looked back.

Then retreated to Team A’s boundary.

Zane watched.

’The dead stop bought her one exchange,’ he thought. ’Sera adjusted immediately after. Reid sealed it.’ He looked at the frost still spreading across the neutral zone floor. ’Three A-ranks working together don’t need to be flashy. They just need to cover each other’s gaps.’

PHASE TWO — 2:15

Ryan — Team B — activated Pressure Wave from the right flank.

Concentrated beam this time. Not the wide dispersal from phase one. Narrow. Focused. The architecture of someone who had learned from Nyx’s redirect and had adjusted accordingly.

Nyx stepped forward.

Caught it.

The concentrated form hit her range differently from the dispersal — the force mass denser, the kinetic load heavier. She held it for a full second longer than phase one had required.

Her arms visibly working.

Then she redirected it upward. Not doubled back. Just removed from the equation. The beam going vertical into the Arena Two ceiling where the reinforced composite absorbed it with a deep resonant sound.
