My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 413: The Second Gate
The fifth ruin stood beneath a mountain range northeast of Nexus, where enormous stone platforms extended from the mountainside like the remains of a buried transportation hub.
Unlike the Observatory or the Forge, the structure showed little evidence of having been designed for a single purpose.
Its buildings were connected by elevated walkways, circular chambers, and several enormous rings embedded in the surrounding rock.
Kai stood before the main entrance with Starbreaker in his hand, examining the ancient markings carved into the stone. The connection revealed by the Grave had led them here, but the ruin’s scale suggested that it was more than a simple gateway.
Aren studied the construction with growing interest. He had explored dozens of ruins across Nexus, and several of them contained foundations resembling the structures beneath his feet.
"I’ve seen this design before. Three of the ruins I explored had circular foundations and similar metal channels, but I never understood why they were built that way."
Lily crouched beside one of the channels, brushing away a layer of dust to expose the metal underneath.
"They weren’t necessarily built for the same purpose, but they may have used the same underlying technology. If this complex connected different transportation systems, those smaller ruins could have been stations along a much larger network."
Aren looked toward the enormous rings rising from the mountainside.
"That would explain why some of those ruins had almost no equipment. I assumed they were incomplete facilities, but perhaps they were only one part of something much larger."
Kai raised Starbreaker toward the entrance. The relic recognized the structure and traced a faint line of light across the ancient markings, causing the sealed doors to separate.
Beyond them lay an enormous chamber filled with circular platforms and suspended navigation instruments. Some platforms were large enough to accommodate several modern vehicles, while others were barely wide enough for a single person to stand on.
There were no weapon racks or extensive storage rooms. Almost every part of the chamber had been arranged around the movement of people, objects, or something that could travel between distant locations.
Sera looked across the chamber before turning toward Kai.
"So this entire place was built to move things from one location to another?"
"That’s the most likely explanation, but we should find the records before deciding how it worked."
The group spread out across the chamber. Gabriel examined a collection of inscriptions along the eastern wall, while Lily began inspecting the navigation instruments and Aren mapped the surrounding platforms.
Kai moved toward the central console, where several rings surrounded a dark circular panel. Starbreaker detected traces of ancient energy beneath the surface, but its Recognition function could not determine how the entire system had been connected.
Lily eventually found a control station that still retained some of its records. When she activated it, several diagrams appeared above the platform, displaying different transportation systems and the conditions required to operate them.
Her expression changed as she examined the information.
"There’s more than one type of transit system recorded here. The Gate is only one method they developed, and the other systems don’t all operate according to the same principles."
She expanded the first diagram, revealing two circular structures connected by a stable line of energy.
"Gates connect two prepared locations. Once both ends are established and synchronized, they can create a passage between them without requiring travelers to cross the distance normally."
The second diagram showed an enormous launch platform surrounded by mechanical supports and energy channels.
"These are launch systems. They were designed to send objects or people beyond the planet along a controlled route, although we don’t know whether every facility was capable of carrying living passengers."
A third diagram depicted a narrow passage surrounded by distorted lines, with the space between two locations appearing compressed.
"Dimensional paths work differently. Instead of connecting two fixed points through a permanent structure, they alter the space between locations so that a traveler can cross a distance that would otherwise be impossible to traverse normally."
Aren examined the final diagram, which contained several intersecting lines extending beyond the edges of the display.
"And this one?"
Lily enlarged the image, revealing a series of connected points that did not correspond to any recognizable physical map.
"Worldline routes. The records describe them as paths between locations or states of space that ordinary navigation systems cannot represent. I can’t tell whether these routes connected separate regions of the same world or something farther away."
Gabriel looked at the four diagrams, considering their implications.
"Then the ancient civilization didn’t rely on a single method of departure. It developed several systems, each capable of solving a different transportation problem."
"Or each system solved a problem the others couldn’t," Kai replied. "We need to find out why they built so many different methods instead of improving just one."
Lily searched the records for an explanation. She discovered that the systems had different operating requirements, and some could not function without information or infrastructure supplied by the others.
A Gate required prepared endpoints and a stable connection. A launch system needed a controlled route and enough energy to sustain its journey. Dimensional paths depended on the stability of the space they crossed, while worldline routes required accurate navigation data before a connection could be attempted.
The systems were complementary, but none was universally reliable.
Aren found a warning attached to a damaged transit record. It described a failed activation in which a destination became unstable before the connection had been fully established, leaving the route unusable.
He read the surviving text twice before looking at the others.
"This warning says the destination began losing stability before the transit was complete. The connection collapsed, and the system couldn’t restore the route afterward."
Sera glanced toward the enormous rings surrounding the chamber.
"So if someone tried to use one of these systems without preparing it properly, they could lose their destination before they even arrived?"
"That’s what the record suggests," Aren replied. "The ancient builders had to prepare the route, verify its stability, and make sure the destination could support the connection. Opening a passage wasn’t enough."
The discovery changed how Kai viewed the transportation network. These structures were not convenient shortcuts that the ancient civilization could activate whenever it wanted. They were complex systems that required preparation, coordination, and reliable information, and an error could make an entire route unusable.
He remembered the departure manifest recovered from the Grave. Its inhabitants had shut down their city in an orderly sequence, prepared supplies for a large population, and left behind a message explaining that they had chosen to depart before the sky opened.
They might have used one of these systems, but the surviving manifest had not revealed their destination. Even if the team found the route they had taken, there was no guarantee it would still function.
Kai stepped toward the central navigation console, and Starbreaker began responding to the surrounding machinery. Its Recognition function traced the Gate’s structure, then extended its analysis toward the records Lily had recovered.
A series of symbols appeared across the relic’s interface. For the first time, it began comparing the Gate with the other ancient structures they had already explored.
ANCIENT SYSTEM CONNECTION DETECTED
NETWORK RELATIONSHIPS: INCOMPLETE
Starbreaker identified the Observatory, the Forge, the Archive, and the Grave, but it could not establish all the connections between them. It recognized each structure individually without understanding how their routes fit together.
Kai watched as the relic attempted to reconstruct the network. The process stalled several times, with incomplete lines appearing across the projection before fading away.
Lily noticed the problem and moved closer.
"Starbreaker can identify the individual structures, but it doesn’t have the information needed to connect them into a complete route map. The Gate’s records might provide what it’s missing, but the relic needs a better way to interpret those connections."
Kai placed Starbreaker against the central console, allowing it to process the navigation data directly. The relic drew information from the surviving records, comparing the physical layout of the Gate with the routes recorded in the Archive and the departure manifest recovered from the Grave.
The interface flickered, then stabilized.
FUNCTION EXPANSION CONDITION SATISFIED
ANCIENT ROUTE RECOGNITION — UNLOCKED
Kai felt the change immediately as Starbreaker processed the chamber around him. Its Recognition function no longer stopped at identifying individual structures; it could now analyze their relationships and identify possible paths between connected ancient systems.
The new ability did not grant him unrestricted transportation or reveal every route across the world. It gave him the information needed to determine which connections might be used, which remained incomplete, and which had been deliberately sealed.
Sera noticed the change in his expression.
"Another upgrade?"
"Ancient Route Recognition. Starbreaker can now identify possible paths between connected ancient structures and determine whether those routes appear viable."
Aren turned toward the relic, his interest renewed.
"Can it identify the connections between the ruins we’ve already visited?"
"I’m about to find out."
Kai activated the new function and directed it toward the central console. The chamber’s ancient network appeared above the platform, with lines connecting the Gate to the Observatory, the Forge, the Archive, and the Grave.
Several additional connections emerged as Starbreaker processed the surrounding records. One route was incomplete, with several sections missing from the available data, while another ended at a structure that appeared to have been deliberately sealed.
Then a third route appeared.
It extended beyond the explored region, passing through several unidentified locations before disappearing beyond the boundaries of the current map.
Lily leaned toward the projection, examining the newly revealed connections.
"That route wasn’t visible before. Starbreaker has identified a possible connection to a structure we haven’t discovered yet, although the records don’t provide enough information to establish whether the entire route is still usable."
Gabriel studied the expanding map.
"If these connections extend beyond the continent, then the network may have linked civilizations that modern history treats as completely separate. We could be looking at only a small part of a much larger system."
Aren nodded as he compared the projected routes with his own records of previously explored ruins.
"That would explain the similarities between structures scattered across Nexus. Some of them may have been built as stations, while others served as relays or navigation points. We might have mistaken parts of one system for separate ruins because we never understood how they connected."
Kai examined the incomplete route and the sealed connection. Ancient Route Recognition had given them a practical way to investigate the network, but it had also revealed how much remained unknown.
The team could now map possible paths between the structures they had discovered and identify locations worth exploring next. However, activating those routes would require more than knowing where they led; the warnings found throughout the complex made it clear that the ancient systems had strict operating requirements.
Lily returned to the records and searched for information about the route used by the vanished city. She found a reference connected to the departure manifest, but the destination remained missing.
The surviving entry contained a repeated instruction associated with several transportation systems.
DEPARTURE PROHIBITED UNTIL WORLD PREPARATION IS COMPLETE.
Lily compared the instruction with the records recovered from the Grave. The wording differed slightly, but the same condition appeared in both locations, suggesting that the departure system and the wider network followed a shared requirement.
Kai looked toward the eastern passage, where the route to the next ruin had been marked on the network display.
"The Warning site may explain what the builders meant by world preparation. If this condition applied to multiple transit systems, we need to understand why they considered it necessary before we attempt to activate any of these routes."
Gabriel gathered the recovered records while Aren marked the newly identified connections for future exploration. The Gate had provided more than another piece of ancient history: Starbreaker now possessed a new function, and the team had gained a practical method for tracing the network beyond the ruins they already knew.
As they prepared to leave, the central console displayed one final record. Its destination information was incomplete, but its activation condition matched the warning they had just recovered.
The route remained sealed until the world was ready.
Kai studied the message before turning away from the console. They had learned how the ancient civilization moved between distant locations, but they still did not know why it had required so much preparation before departure.
The next ruin might provide that answer, and with all seven sites awakening, the team could no longer assume that the ancient network was merely preserving the past.
