The sixth ruin stood inside a narrow valley surrounded by towering cliffs. Unlike the other ancient facilities, it had no visible entrance to a large underground complex, no weapon platforms, and no machinery extending across the surrounding landscape. A single stone structure stood at the center of the valley, protected by layers of metal plates and unfamiliar symbols.

Kai examined the structure while Starbreaker scanned its exterior. The relic detected a weak energy source beneath the walls, but almost every other system appeared to have shut down centuries ago.

Aren walked around the building, checking its corners and searching for another entrance.

"That’s it? After the Forge and the Gate, I expected something a little more impressive."

Lily crouched beside one of the protective markings, brushing dust from its surface. Unlike the inscriptions they had found in the previous ruins, these markings formed several overlapping layers around the building’s foundation.

"Don’t judge it by its size. These markings aren’t decorative, and they’re not part of the building’s structural support either. Someone deliberately placed them here to protect whatever is inside."

Gabriel examined the outer wall, recognizing a pattern that appeared in several records recovered from the Archive.

"The Church has preserved references to similar markings, although none of our surviving documents explain their purpose. They’re usually found around sealed chambers or objects that someone wanted to preserve."

Kai directed Starbreaker toward the entrance, and the relic traced the protective markings one by one. The outer door opened, revealing a narrow passage that led into a small chamber with a damaged console at its center.

The room contained almost nothing else. There were no storage compartments, weapon racks, or collections of ancient records, only a circular platform and a wall covered in protective markings that had survived far better than the machinery around them.

Aren looked around the empty chamber with disappointment.

"We traveled all this way for a broken console and a wall?"

Lily ignored him and examined the platform. She discovered that the protective markings continued beneath the floor, forming a complete pattern around the central console, and the system appeared to be preserving the chamber rather than powering it.

"This place wasn’t built to store equipment. The entire structure is protecting something specific, and the console is probably the only part we need to activate."

Kai approached the platform and raised Starbreaker. The relic recognized the ancient system, but unlike the previous ruins, it did not immediately begin restoring the machinery around it.

Instead, the protective markings illuminated one after another, spreading from the floor to the walls. The console responded with a faint vibration, and the damaged display flickered to life.

WARNING FACILITY — PRESERVATION MODE

ACTIVATION CONDITION: UNVERIFIED

Kai watched as the system attempted to verify its surroundings. Starbreaker projected the six ruins they had explored, then added the central structure beneath Nexus as the seventh point in the network.

The console remained inactive for several seconds before the first message appeared across the wall.

DO NOT OPEN THE SKY BEFORE THE WORLD IS READY.

Nobody spoke immediately.

The words were simple, but their meaning was difficult to ignore. The Observatory had tracked something beyond ordinary celestial boundaries, the Forge contained weapons designed to interact with dimensional space, and the Grave had preserved a message from a civilization that chose to leave before the sky opened.

Now the sixth ruin had delivered a warning directly connected to that phrase.

Aren stared at the inscription, his earlier disappointment replaced by unease.

"What does that mean?"

Lily studied the words and examined the protective markings surrounding them. The inscription was not a fragment of a historical record, and it showed no signs of being added after the chamber was built.

"I think we’re about to find out."

She connected her equipment to the console and began examining the system’s remaining functions. The message was stored in a protected memory section, but several layers of information remained inaccessible until the facility verified its activation conditions.

Gabriel moved closer to the wall, carefully comparing the inscription with the records recovered from the Grave.

"The wording is important. It doesn’t say the sky will open, or that someone should prevent it from opening. It says not to open it before the world is ready, which suggests that opening it might be intentional."

Sera looked toward Kai.

"So the ancient civilization might have been preparing to do something themselves?"

"Possibly. But we don’t know whether the warning refers to a physical gateway, a dimensional boundary, or something else entirely."

Kai examined the console again. The Observatory’s records had established that the ancient civilization tracked a presence beyond its ordinary observation limits, while the Forge had shown that its weapons failed to kill whatever they were designed to affect.

The warning offered a new possibility: the ancient builders might not have been trying only to defend themselves. They could have been preparing for an event that required their entire world to reach a particular condition first.

Lily’s equipment chimed as the console completed another diagnostic sequence. She looked at the results, then quickly checked them against Starbreaker’s network map.

"The facility is receiving signals from all seven sites. It’s comparing their status against a set of conditions, but the activation requirements are different from the ones we encountered at the other ruins."

Kai stepped closer to the display.

"What conditions?"

"The system isn’t checking whether the ruins are simply powered on. It’s checking whether their signals are synchronized and whether the central network can communicate with every site."

Lily adjusted the interface, allowing Starbreaker to compare the incoming signals with the console’s stored requirements. The six explored ruins and the central structure beneath Nexus appeared as separate points, each carrying a different function within the network.

The Observatory supplied observation data, the Forge preserved manufacturing records, the Archive stored historical information, the Grave contained departure records, and the Gate provided transit data. The warning facility appeared to regulate the activation sequence, while the central structure coordinated the network as a whole.

The console’s display changed.

NETWORK STATUS: SEVEN SITES DETECTED

SIGNAL SYNCHRONIZATION: COMPLETE

PREPARATION CONDITION: SATISFIED

A second message appeared beneath the first.

THE PREPARATION WILL BEGIN WHEN THE SEVEN AWAKEN.

Sera looked at the display, then toward the others.

"Wait. Does that mean the preparation has already started?"

Lily checked the readings again, searching for evidence that the console had misinterpreted the network’s status. The signal synchronization was complete, and the activation condition matched the records exactly.

"Yes. The system wasn’t waiting for us to find this room. It was waiting for all seven sites to awaken, and that condition has now been met."

The revelation changed the meaning of their entire investigation. The ruins had not simply been dormant structures waiting to be explored; their activation was part of a sequence designed by the ancient builders, and the warning facility had been waiting for the network to reach this specific state.

Aren looked toward the entrance, as though expecting the surrounding valley to change.

"Then we’ve triggered something without knowing what it does. That’s not exactly reassuring."

Gabriel remained focused on the inscription.

"It may not be something we triggered deliberately. The network could have been waiting for its own conditions to be satisfied, and our exploration simply restored the connections it needed."

Kai considered the distinction. They had activated the ruins because they wanted to understand the ancient network, but they had not known that restoring the seven sites would satisfy a separate condition.

Whatever the preparation involved, it had now begun without their permission or understanding.

Lily continued searching the console for instructions. The first message remained unchanged, but a new section of the interface opened beneath it, revealing a damaged sequence of commands linked to the central network.

"The facility has another record. Most of the instructions are missing, but it identifies the central structure as the next destination and requests a complete network status report."

Kai examined the recovered sequence. The warning facility was not instructing them to activate another ruin or open a transit route, but to return to the central structure after the seven signals synchronized.

That gave them a concrete next step.

"Download everything the console can recover. I want the original records preserved, including the parts that appear damaged, and I want the network’s current status compared with the instructions stored here."

Lily immediately began copying the data, while Gabriel sent the recovered warning to the Church’s researchers. Aren recorded the chamber’s layout and protective markings, ensuring that they could return if the facility changed after its activation.

Sera stayed near Kai, watching the console as its lights dimmed and brightened again.

"If the preparation has already started, could the network do something else without us knowing? We still don’t understand what opening the sky means, and the signal from the Observatory hasn’t been explained."

"That’s why we’re going back to the central structure. We need to determine what has changed before we allow the network to progress any further, assuming we even have a way to stop it."

The team finished collecting the available records and prepared to leave the chamber. Kai took one final look at the warning, considering the possibility that the ancient civilization had deliberately built this facility to prevent an event from occurring too early.

The inscription did not say that the sky must never open. It warned that the world had to be ready first, which meant the ancient builders believed readiness could be achieved through some kind of preparation.

The question was what the world needed to prepare for, and whether the seven ruins were restoring the conditions that would allow it to happen.

As Kai stepped into the passage, Starbreaker suddenly registered a change in the network. The six ruins they had explored and the central structure beneath Nexus appeared on its display, each transmitting a stable signal toward the warning facility.

The console behind them activated again.

SEVEN SITES SYNCHRONIZED

PREPARATION SEQUENCE: INITIATED

Kai stopped and turned back toward the chamber. Nobody had touched the console, and the team had already completed the data download, yet the warning facility had begun transmitting information into the network on its own.

Lily checked Starbreaker’s readings, confirming that the signal originated from the warning facility before spreading toward the central structure.

"The network is responding without any input from us. The warning facility has started sending its own data, and the central structure is receiving it."

Gabriel’s expression tightened as she watched the signal stabilize.

"Then this isn’t just an old message waiting to be read. The facility is part of an active process, and it has begun carrying out its instructions."

Kai looked toward the valley entrance, knowing that the team had no reliable way to predict what the next stage would do. They had recovered the warning, identified the activation condition, and discovered that the network had begun operating independently.

The ancient builders had left them a clear instruction, but not the knowledge needed to understand its full meaning.

Kai turned toward the route leading back to Nexus.

"Let’s return to the central structure. Whatever this preparation is, we need to understand what it’s doing before the next stage begins."

Behind them, the warning facility continued transmitting its message through the ancient network, and the seven sites remained synchronized for the first time in centuries.

The preparation had begun.
