The fourth ruin lay beyond the outskirts of Nexus, buried beneath a vast protective structure that stretched across an entire valley. From above, the structure looked like a collection of ancient buildings swallowed by the earth, with only their highest towers visible through the surrounding stone.

When Kai and the others arrived, the entrance opened without resistance. Their Starbreaker’s connection to the ancient network had allowed them to locate the site, but none of them knew what they would find inside.

The passage led downward before opening onto a wide avenue. Beyond it stood an entire city, its buildings rising in orderly rows beneath a translucent dome that covered the valley.

Kai stopped at the entrance and studied the streets below. The architecture was unfamiliar, but the city itself looked remarkably ordinary. There were residential buildings, public squares, shops, workshops, and elevated transportation lines connecting different districts.

What made the sight unsettling was the complete absence of damage.

There were no collapsed buildings, scorched walls, or defensive barriers. The streets remained intact, and the windows of the nearest buildings reflected the faint light filtering through the dome.

Sera looked down the empty avenue.

"This place doesn’t look like Aegis. There’s no sign of a battle, and I can’t see any damage that would suggest a disaster destroyed the city."

Aren examined the nearest buildings before checking the surrounding streets.

"She’s right. Aegis was full of evidence showing how its people fought and failed to protect their civilization. Here, I can’t find a single sign that the city ever came under attack."

Gabriel looked toward the distant towers, her expression thoughtful.

"Then perhaps we have finally found a civilization that survived long enough to leave on its own terms."

"Perhaps," Kai replied. "But we need to establish what happened before we decide that."

He led the group down the avenue, keeping Starbreaker active as they entered the first residential district. The relic detected no active defenses or hostile entities, although several ancient systems remained powered beneath the streets.

The first building they entered was a home with an open front door. Inside, furniture remained arranged around a dining table, and several sets of clothing hung inside cupboards. A small collection of household tools sat beside an unfinished repair, while preserved food remained in storage containers near the kitchen.

Sera walked through the rooms, examining the belongings without disturbing them. She stopped beside a cupboard containing several sets of clothes, including smaller garments that appeared to belong to children.

"They didn’t pack everything. Whoever left expected to return, or they didn’t have time to take the things they needed."

She looked toward the dining table, where several dishes remained arranged as though the family had been preparing a meal.

"But if they were forced to leave suddenly, why isn’t there any damage? No broken doors, no overturned furniture, nothing that suggests a struggle."

Aren examined the entrance and checked the surrounding walls.

"There’s no sign of forced entry. The door wasn’t damaged, and the furniture hasn’t been moved. Whatever happened here, it didn’t involve an attack on this house."

Kai moved toward the rear rooms and checked for signs of concealed passages or emergency exits. He found none, and Starbreaker detected no unusual spatial distortion inside the building.

The family had simply disappeared.

The group continued through the district, examining several more homes before moving toward a nearby public square. The same pattern repeated throughout the neighborhood. Personal belongings remained in place, workshops contained unfinished projects, and the public transportation system had been left intact.

Lily eventually stopped beside a maintenance terminal embedded in the wall of a public building. Its display was dark, but Starbreaker identified a surviving connection to the city’s internal network.

"I’m getting information from the local systems. The storage devices are damaged, but some of the maintenance records have survived."

She connected her equipment and began retrieving the available data. Several minutes later, a collection of medical, transportation, and public-service records appeared on her display.

The information revealed that the city had not suffered a sudden collapse in its final days. Hospitals had continued operating, public transportation had remained available, and the city’s essential services had been maintained until the final stages of its shutdown.

Gabriel studied the medical records.

"There are no reports of a mass-casualty event. The hospitals weren’t overwhelmed, and there are no surviving records of a major epidemic or widespread injuries."

"Does that mean the population survived?" Sera asked.

"Not necessarily," Gabriel replied. "The absence of casualties in these records only tells us that the medical system wasn’t recording a disaster. We still don’t know what happened to the people themselves."

Kai agreed with her assessment. They had found no bodies in the homes, streets, hospitals, or public shelters, and there were no large burial grounds anywhere in the district. However, those facts alone could not establish whether the population had escaped, been removed, or disappeared through some unknown process.

The team needed evidence of what the inhabitants had done before they vanished.

Lily returned to the maintenance records and examined the final entries more closely. The city’s systems had been shut down in stages, beginning with residential networks and local transportation. Public services followed, then industrial facilities, and finally the central power distribution system.

The sequence had been orderly and carefully managed.

"This wasn’t a sudden failure. Someone issued shutdown instructions across the entire city, and the systems followed them in a planned sequence."

Aren leaned over her display.

"Can you determine how much time passed between the first shutdown and the last?"

"Not precisely. Several timestamps are missing, but the records suggest the process took days rather than minutes. They had enough time to prepare the city before its systems went offline."

That changed the team’s interpretation of the evidence. The city had not merely been abandoned; its inhabitants had deliberately prepared it for a future without them.

Aren searched the remaining transportation records and eventually found an inventory listing stored supplies, maintenance equipment, and transport capacity. The quantities were far greater than what a small expedition would require.

He brought the inventory to Kai.

"This city prepared for a large-scale departure. The transport records list enough supplies to support a substantial population, but the destination fields have been damaged."

Kai studied the figures. They could not determine exactly how many people had lived in the city, but the supplies and transport arrangements were inconsistent with a small group escaping ahead of an approaching enemy.

The inhabitants had planned to move many people.

The question was where they had gone.

The team followed the transportation network toward the city’s central district. Unlike the residential areas, this part of the city contained large public buildings and several structures connected by elevated platforms. At the center stood a circular building surrounded by thick metal supports.

Starbreaker recognized the structure’s basic design.

ANCIENT TRANSIT SYSTEM DETECTED

STATUS: INACTIVE

Kai approached the entrance, allowing the relic to examine the framework. The system identified traces of dimensional interaction, but the readings were incomplete. Whatever the structure had once done, its primary functions were no longer operational.

Lily examined the outer ring and compared it with the records recovered from the Archive.

"The construction is similar to the Gate system. The dimensions are different, but the underlying structure uses the same principles."

Aren looked around the chamber.

"So this city wasn’t simply preparing to evacuate its population through ordinary transportation. They were using an ancient transit system."

"That’s the most likely explanation," Kai said. "But we still need to establish whether this was the destination, the departure point, or only one part of a larger route."

They entered the building and discovered several empty platforms arranged around a central ring. Each platform was connected to a network of metal channels that disappeared beneath the floor, while the walls contained control panels and storage compartments.

The structure had been built to transport people or objects through a system that modern technology could not fully reproduce. However, the central mechanism was inactive, and there was no indication that it could be restored with the information they currently possessed.

Lily examined the control panels while Kai activated Starbreaker’s Recognition function. The relic detected traces of the ancient network, but the damaged records prevented it from reconstructing the route.

"There’s still information here, but the main system has been shut down for so long that we can’t determine its original destination. If we want to understand how this city left, we’ll need to find a record that survived the shutdown."

Gabriel searched the surrounding walls and discovered a narrow compartment hidden behind a protective panel. Inside was a small storage device, sealed beneath several layers of material that had preserved it from the deterioration affecting the rest of the facility.

Lily carefully removed the device and connected it to her equipment. Most of the stored information was unreadable, but a single message remained intact.

The text appeared above the platform.

WE CHOSE TO LEAVE BEFORE THE SKY OPENED.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Sera looked from the message to the enormous ring surrounding the chamber.

"So they knew something was going to happen, and they decided to leave before it did. That sounds less like an evacuation and more like a decision made in advance."

Aren shook his head slightly.

"We still don’t know what they were escaping. The message doesn’t mention an enemy, and it doesn’t say the city was under attack. It only tells us that they chose to leave before a specific event."

Gabriel remained focused on the inscription.

"The Observatory tracked something beyond the world, and the Forge contained weapons designed to interact with dimensional boundaries. Now we’ve found a city that deliberately departed before the sky opened. These discoveries are connected, but we cannot yet say exactly how."

Kai considered the possibilities. The inhabitants might have been preparing for the presence detected by the Observatory, or they might have anticipated a larger event that forced them to abandon their world. The failure of the Forge’s weapons could also have influenced their decision.

None of those explanations had enough evidence to be accepted as fact.

He looked again at the inscription.

"Whatever happened, they believed leaving was safer than staying. We need to find out where they went before we can understand why."

Lily returned to the storage device and recovered a final set of records from its damaged memory. Most of the entries contained inventory numbers and incomplete transport data, but one document included a surviving departure manifest.

It listed several groups of passengers, the supplies assigned to them, and references to a transit network. The destination fields were missing, but one symbol remained intact beside the final entry.

Starbreaker recognized it immediately.

The symbol matched the marking found at the Gate ruin, the same one that had appeared at the end of several Candidate records in the Archive.

Lily compared the two records, then looked up at Kai.

"This confirms that the city used the same transit network we’ve been investigating. The symbol appears in both the departure manifest and the Archive’s records, so these aren’t separate systems that happen to look alike."

Aren examined the recovered manifest.

"Then the Gate wasn’t just an isolated structure. It was part of a network that connected multiple locations, and this city may have used it to transport its population somewhere beyond our current map."

"Can we identify the destination?" Sera asked.

"Not yet," Lily replied. "The most important fields are missing. We know they prepared to leave, and we know the transit network was involved, but we don’t know where the route led or whether the journey succeeded."

Kai stored the recovered data and marked the transit chamber for further investigation. The city had provided a concrete lead, but its most important question remained unanswered.

As the team left the chamber, Starbreaker suddenly activated. A thin line of light appeared across its interface, tracing a connection between the Grave and the Gate ruin they had visited earlier.

ANCIENT ROUTE DETECTED

CONNECTION STATUS: DORMANT

Kai stopped and examined the reading. The route had not been visible during their initial exploration, suggesting that the recovered departure records had provided Starbreaker with information it previously lacked.

The Grave was not an isolated city with an unusual history. It had been connected to the ancient transit network, and its inhabitants had deliberately shut down their systems before leaving.

Kai looked back toward the preserved city, where empty homes and untouched streets remained beneath the protective dome. The absence of destruction no longer seemed like a sign that nothing terrible had happened. It suggested that the inhabitants had prepared for something they believed was coming and had chosen to leave rather than face it.

The team now had a destination for its next investigation: the Gate network. If the ancient builders had left a record of where the population went, it might reveal whether their departure had succeeded and what lay beyond the world they had abandoned.
