Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1679 - 1653: As Far as the Eye Can See, Everlasting Love: The Silly, Confused Woman
The next morning, while eating, Joseph Lancaster’s good mood was apparent.
Perhaps it’s in a man’s nature to be magnanimous; Joseph Lancaster’s expression revealed nothing unusual, while Violet Zimmerman seemed a bit afraid to lift her head, especially after seeing Joseph, she instinctively closed her legs.
Before falling asleep last night, Daxton Lancaster had specifically reminded her to keep her legs together, to make sure she didn’t lose the "seeds" that were stolen... so she hadn’t dared to bathe until this morning.
"Vesper, feel free to come over and stay anytime. Look at how happy Joseph is after you spent just one night here,"
Lorelei Howard enthusiastically helped Vesper Carter with food, and Vesper instinctively glanced at Joseph Lancaster, politely curving her lips and saying only "Thank you" without adding anything else.
Joseph had a good appetite today, having two bowls of rice. The usually refined eater was, for once, eating ravenously.
After the meal, Joseph drove Vesper to the office. Seeing his smiling profile, she asked with a smile, "Manager, why are you in such a good mood today? Did you have a good dream last night?"
"Mm," Joseph replied with a sound that, despite being just a nasal tone, couldn’t hide his good mood.
"Oh? What kind of good dream? Tell me so I can share the joy,"
Vesper asked with a smile, secretly observing Joseph’s reaction.
"Dreamt I got married and had a son. With such a fulfilled life, how could I not be happy!" Joseph looked ahead, his smile growing wider.
Vesper felt a pang of bitterness. Having been married for half a year, she knew well what Joseph’s reaction meant; it resembled that of her husband’s after a night of activity; a satisfied man is a happy man the next morning.
Suppressing her discomfort, Vesper forced a smile, "Is that so? Well, congratulations."
The words were clearly perfunctory and unconsidered; it was just a dream—what’s there to celebrate?
But surprisingly, Joseph agreeably echoed, "Yes, it is something to celebrate."
Vesper...
Felt a wave of bitterness rising in her heart.
At first, it was for the sake of appearances that she helped out.
But through this period of "interaction," she ended up getting into the role; every time she followed Joseph home, receiving the warm treatment from Lorelei, there was an illusion she truly was Joseph’s girlfriend.
However, each time she returned to her own home, reality reminded her it was just an act, a show for the manager’s family.
She knew Joseph was outstanding, so perfect that no faults could be found, unlike her husband, who even hinted at her for the sake of living...
With a pretend light-heartedness, Vesper asked, "Manager, if you so hope for a happy family, why don’t you officially find a girlfriend?"
"Sigh..." Joseph sighed and said, "Dreams are just dreams. In reality, being alone is better, carefree with no constraints."
Despite his words, Joseph’s mind was replaying the scene of Violet Zimmerman’s constraint from the previous night.
"...no drinking alcohol from now on..."
Recalling Violet’s assertive demeanor, his phoenix eyes couldn’t help but soften.
Watching Joseph’s reaction, Vesper’s expression turned a bit dazed. If she wasn’t mistaken, the girl he liked should be a servant from his home. His family was wealthy; prominent families like his cared a lot about status, so he was forced to ask her to pose as his girlfriend to deal with his family.
"Vesper, I’m planning to transfer you to work at the H City branch. If you’re willing, you can bring your husband along; a couple working together, there’s better understanding."
Joseph said while driving, a decision he made after careful consideration.
Vesper’s husband had character issues, but ultimately Joseph felt responsible. If he hadn’t asked Secretary Vesper for help, the couple wouldn’t have ended up in this predicament.
Feeling guilty for causing her trouble with her husband, Joseph made this decision as a way to make amends.
By transferring Vesper to another city, she wouldn’t have to come home and report every week, and as for her husband, his extortion was just a means to get by.
Since that was the case, why not let her benefit, the branch there needed an assistant, and Vesper had the capability, her husband was a college graduate, making him a secretary under her should be more than feasible.
After Joseph finished speaking, Vesper was stunned. She turned to look at him, cautiously asking after a while, "Manager, is it because my work isn’t satisfactory?"
"No, precisely because your performance is outstanding, we’re assigning you over there,"
Joseph said plainly, "They need an assistant manager over there, and after much thought, you’re the most suitable, so we’re preparing to transfer you there. If you and your husband are willing, he can be your secretary, and his salary can match yours when you were my secretary. If your husband performs well, there will also be chances for promotion."
Looking at Joseph’s profile, Vesper couldn’t quite tell what she was feeling. She understood Joseph’s intentions, promoting her on one hand while sending her away on the other.
Vesper lowered her eyelids to hide the bitterness in her eyes and asked with a smile, "When will I start there?"
"They’re currently short on help, so the sooner the better. But you can go home and discuss it with your husband and reply to me in two days."
"Alright, I will." Vesper nodded.
Joseph smiled and said, "Once you’re there, I’ll have the company arrange accommodation for you. Don’t worry, you won’t have to live in the office and survive on instant noodles anymore."
Enduring the bitterness in her chest, Vesper said, "Thank you, manager."
"No need to thank me—I should be the one thanking you. After all, your troubles with your husband arose because of me. Vesper, I’m sorry for giving you such a headache."
Joseph said sincerely, secretly letting out a sigh of relief from within.
He wasn’t oblivious; ever since David Sterling came to the company causing trouble, Secretary Vesper’s attitude towards him changed a bit. Several times he caught her secretly looking at him.
Since it was impossible, there shouldn’t be false hope, it’s best to snuff it out in the cradle.
"Manager, you don’t need to blame yourself. If not for you...I wouldn’t have realized that David is like that."
Vesper said earnestly.
Joseph smiled slightly and said, "Vesper, you’re still too young with insufficient social experience. It’s said that poverty can make even couples despair; sometimes, one has to bow down for a little grain."
"Maybe that’s true." Vesper once again lowered her eyelids, concealing her disappointment well.
Having arranged things for Secretary Vesper, Joseph felt unprecedentedly relieved, occasionally chuckling during work throughout the day.
His woman is really clueless; she didn’t even know if there were any of his seeds left in her body in the end.
Sigh, a careless and fuzzy woman, he wondered how she managed to raise their son.
