Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1680 - 1654: As Far as the Eye Can See, It’s Eternal: Not Wanting Her to Be Jealous
People who haven’t lived through that era will never really understand how hard it was to get a divorce back then.
If you were unemployed and staying home, even after persuading your family you still had to go to the neighborhood office for an approval letter; if you had a work unit, it was even harder.
Getting your leader to sign off and agree to the divorce was practically harder than reaching the sky.
With her family opposing it and the leaders constantly mediating, Vesper Carter had no choice but to take David Sterling and move to another city. On Joseph Lancaster’s side, a newly promoted male secretary had been assigned to him specifically so Violet Zimmerman wouldn’t get jealous.
After dinner, Violet went into the bathroom to take a shower. In this season she used to bathe twice a week.
Daxton Lancaster was in the bedroom teaching his son how to walk.
He set Robert Lancaster down a bit farther away from himself, then squatted on the floor and opened his arms to him. "Son, come here, come to Daddy..."
"Daddy, Daddy," Robert stretched out his little hands, calling "Daddy" as he toddled toward Daxton.
The kid had just turned one, his walking was still wobbly. He’d gone not even ten steps when his little body tilted, and Daxton, reacting fast, rushed over and caught him.
He set the little guy down properly, then backed away again to squat on the floor.
"Son, come over."
"...Our life is full of sunshine, full of sunshine..."
In the bathroom, Violet was lathering herself up while unconsciously humming a tune. Just from the sound you could tell she was in a good mood.
Daxton’s eyes narrowed a little as he stared ahead, lost in thought. Opposite him, after Robert had walked a few steps his little body went unsteady again.
Daxton was too caught up in his thoughts and didn’t notice the little guy was about to fall. Only when a loud "Waaa..." burst out did he snap back to himself.
Robert was sprawled on the floor, looking at Daxton with aggrieved eyes, crying and calling out, "Daddy... hold me..."
Daxton drew in a breath, stood up, and hurried over to pick the little guy up, patiently soothing him. "Robert, don’t cry. Robert’s a man. It’s all Daddy’s fault, Daddy didn’t watch you properly..."
Hearing her son’s hurt little cries, Violet didn’t even have time to rinse off the soap. She yanked open the bathroom door and asked anxiously, "Daxton, what happened to Robert?"
When little kids feel wronged, the first thing they want is comfort from their parents. The moment he saw Violet, Robert reached his small hands out to her again, his mouth puckering in grievance as he called, "Mommy, hold me... Robbie fell..."
Daxton had been patiently coaxing his son, but when he saw Violet standing in the bathroom doorway without a stitch on, he actually forgot to keep comforting the boy. He just stared blankly at Violet, the look in his phoenix eyes clearly changing.
A child is always the flesh of his mother’s heart. Robert’s crying was so aggrieved his nose was running, and Violet’s heart ached. Not thinking of anything else, she started toward him to take the child.
"Violet, go put your bathrobe on, don’t catch a cold." Daxton reminded in a low voice, his tone already different.
Violet glanced down at herself. With a startled "Ah..." she bolted back into the bathroom in a panic.
Watching Violet’s flustered, at-a-loss expression, Daxton couldn’t help the curve that lifted his lips. The gloom he’d been feeling a moment ago vanished on the spot.
"Mommy, Mommy..." With Mommy not comforting him, Robert cried even more pitifully. He turned back, anxiously patting Daxton’s shoulder, his little body straining forward with effort.
"Daddy... go! Go! Find Mommy... hold me..."
"Okay, Daddy will take Robert to find Mommy," Daxton agreed good-naturedly, carrying his son toward the bathroom.
