Chapter 1579 - 1570: Where the Gaze Falls, There Lies Eternity: A Woman Who Acts Spoiled

Violet Zimmerman had just slipped half of her clothing sleeve off when Joseph Lancaster stopped her. He frowned slightly and said sternly.

"What are you doing? Even if you don’t think of yourself, you should think of the child in your belly!"

It wasn’t something a younger uncle should say, but Joseph Lancaster spoke without a hint of embarrassment or uncertainty, as though they were truly a married couple. At this moment, he resembled a husband concerned for his wife.

"Oh, is the young lady expecting? It’s so cold outside, you should wear more, just like your husband said, so you don’t catch a cold. I’ve heard that medications and injections aren’t good for the baby."

The store clerk chimed in as though they were quite familiar with the couple, and Violet Zimmerman felt her face grow even hotter, lowering her head, wishing she could find a crack in the ground to hide.

Joseph Lancaster’s demeanor was natural, his brow slightly furrowed, as if displeased that his "wife" was being disobedient.

He helped Violet Zimmerman put on her army coat again and buttoned two buttons, then wrapped the newly purchased scarf around her neck.

Inside her gloves lined with aviation cotton, Violet Zimmerman tightly curled her hands.

In the envious gaze of the store clerk, Joseph Lancaster took Violet Zimmerman by the hand and headed towards the grocery section.

In that era, food was scarce, so regardless of wealth, the selection was limited.

"See if there’s anything you like to eat," Joseph Lancaster said as they arrived at the grocery counter. His cold hand still gripped Violet Zimmerman’s wrist.

The store was heated with earthy warmth from a central iron stove, though it barely felt warmer than outside.

Perhaps due to the layers, warmth spread in Violet Zimmerman’s heart. She surveyed the few available fruits and pointed.

"I want that one."

Seeing Violet Zimmerman point at the sour pears, Joseph Lancaster frowned slightly, "Isn’t it sour?"

He had eaten them in winters past, and the sourness was as potent as vinegar essence. Just glancing at them now caused his mouth to water.

Violet Zimmerman licked her lips, her eyes fixated on the sour pears, repeating somewhat unhappily, "I want it."

Joseph Lancaster laughed, turning his gaze to the woman pouting unhappily, and replied with a smile, "Alright, let’s buy some. We’ll buy plenty and freeze the leftovers outside if we can’t finish them."

The youth’s expression and speech showed unconscious tenderness. Although Violet Zimmerman continued to pout unhappily, the corners of her mouth betrayed a smile.

Joseph Lancaster spent quite a bit, buying two bags of sour pears, apples, and oranges, and instructed Violet Zimmerman to hold them inside her army coat as they got on the bicycle to protect the fruits from the wind.

By the time they returned home, the sky was nearly dark, and the streetlights along the Lancaster Family yard’s path had already lit up.

During dinner, Daxton Lancaster hadn’t returned yet, and Violet Zimmerman called his office but couldn’t get through.

After dinner, Violet Zimmerman returned to her room, lay on the bed, eating sour pears while listening to the tape recorder.

Joseph Lancaster had told her that the pregnancy manual said prenatal education was crucial for the baby, and listening to music would make the baby smarter.

Pregnant women tend to be sleepy. After listening to music for a while, Violet Zimmerman fell asleep, leaning against the front of the bed, with half of the sour pear still in her hand.

The tape recorder was placed on the bedside cabinet, playing soothing music.

"Violet... I’m home!" Joseph Lancaster’s voice echoed in the corridor, slurring slightly as he staggered in.

Violet Zimmerman was sleeping soundly, not hearing Daxton Lancaster calling her.

The drunk man staggered to the bedside, squinted his almond-shaped eyes at the sleeping Violet Zimmerman, then threw himself onto the bed.
