Chapter 31: Oak Room

  • Next Chapter

The Oak Room was a fortress of old money and quiet power. It sat in the heart of the financial district behind an unmarked heavy oak door.

There were no neon signs and no bouncers. The establishment relied entirely on generational wealth and exclusive memberships to keep the public out.

Lucas stepped through the front entrance.

The air inside smelled of aged leather, expensive cigar smoke, and single malt scotch. A ma?tre d’ in a flawless tuxedo immediately moved to intercept him.

Lucas did not hesitate. He utilized the residual confidence of his Sophisticated Etiquette skill.

He offered a polite nod, bypassed the podium, and walked directly into the dimly lit lounge as if he owned the building.

He spotted Harrison sitting in a secluded leather booth in the far corner.

The lead investor of Verman Development was sipping a glass of amber liquid. He watched Lucas approach with cold, analytical eyes.

He did not look angry. He looked like a man preparing to squash a minor insect that had crawled onto his pristine dining table.

Lucas slid into the booth across from him. He took the thick manila envelope out of his jacket and placed it flat on the table.

"You did not bring your luggage," Harrison observed. His aristocratic voice was smooth and laced with quiet danger.

"I am not leaving the city," Lucas replied.

He activated his Micro-Motive Perception. The blue visual overlay washed over the older man.

Harrison’s posture was relaxed, but his underlying psychological motivation was flashing bright yellow with protective caution. Harrison did not care about Camilla’s romantic feelings.

He cared about the stability of the board and the safety of the company’s stock.

"You are a very arrogant young man," Harrison said softly. He tapped a finger against his crystal glass.

"I hold timestamped photographs of you drinking scotch with Victoria Sterling in her executive suite. One hour after you left Camilla’s office. You are Victoria’s plant inside my company. If I make one phone call, Camilla will see exactly where your loyalty lies."

"If you make that call," Lucas countered, "you will burn millions of dollars of your own money."

Harrison raised a silver eyebrow. "Excuse me?"

"You are a pragmatist," Lucas said. He leaned forward and let the dark, persuasive resonance of his Silver Tongue skill bleed into his voice.

"If you expose me, Camilla is publicly humiliated. The press will run a month-long cycle about how the great Camilla Verman was seduced and conned by a twenty-one-year-old spy from her biggest rival."

Harrison’s jaw tightened a fraction of an inch. Lucas was hitting the exact structural weakness his Leverage Inversion skill had highlighted.

"The board of directors will lose faith in her judgment," Lucas continued relentlessly. "Her corporate rivals will smell blood in the water. Verman Development stock will plummet by fifteen percent on Monday morning. You will incinerate your own portfolio just to get rid of a fake fiancé."

"I can weather a temporary dip in the stock to excise a parasite," Harrison stated coldly.

"But I am not a parasite," Lucas said. He met the older man’s gaze without blinking. "I am the man who just handed Verman Development the financial district expansion."

Harrison froze. The crystal glass stopped halfway to his mouth. "What did you just say?"

"Call your acquisitions director," Lucas instructed. "Call Mads," Lucas instructed.

"Ask him where that zoning contract you’ve been trying to audit actually came from."

Harrison stared at him. The absolute certainty in Lucas’s eyes made the older investor hesitate. He set his glass down, pulled a sleek smartphone from his breast pocket, and dialed a number. He pressed the phone to his ear.

"Mads," Harrison said. "The zoning package Mr. Vintage delivered. Whose work is it?"

Harrison listened. The silence in the booth was heavy. Lucas watched the microscopic shifts in the investor’s facial muscles. The cold disdain slowly evaporated, replaced by a profound, calculating shock.

"Vertex Management," Harrison murmured into the phone. "Victoria Sterling’s own legal team. And it has already been filed with the city?"

Harrison ended the call. He slowly lowered the phone and looked at Lucas as if a ghost had just taken a seat at his table.

"You stole Victoria Sterling’s crown jewel," Harrison whispered.

"I used my position at Vertex Management to access her secure physical servers," Lucas lied seamlessly. He was weaving a narrative that perfectly aligned with Harrison’s corporate worldview.

"She trusts me. She never checks on me.

So I walked into her records room, copied her most lucrative real estate contract, and handed it directly to Camilla."

Harrison processed the new information. He looked down at the manila envelope on the table. The photographs of Lucas toasting with Victoria suddenly meant something entirely different.

Harrison did not see Victoria’s plant anymore. He saw a ruthless double agent who had robbed a four-billion-dollar empire while its founder poured him scotch.

"Then why were you in her suite this afternoon?" Harrison asked slowly.

"Because Victoria still believes I am hers," Lucas said. "I went up there to keep her believing it. She toasted me and promised me a seat on her board. As long as she trusts me, I can keep feeding Verman Development everything she plans. She will never see the hit coming."

The tension in the booth shifted. The hostility dissolved into a dark, mutual respect.

Harrison was a ruthless capitalist. He respected leverage, and he respected results.

A twenty-one-year-old who could smile at Victoria Sterling while he gutted her empire was not a liability. He was a terrifyingly useful asset.

Harrison reached across the table and picked up the manila envelope.

"I will personally ensure the remaining copies of these photographs are incinerated," Harrison said softly. He tucked the envelope into his suit jacket. "Your secret is safe with me, Mr. Vintage. But Camilla must never learn about these meetings. She would never understand."

"I appreciate that," Lucas replied.

"But understand this," Harrison warned as he leaned closer. "You belong to Verman Development now. If I ever suspect your double game runs the other way, and you are really feeding our secrets to Victoria, I will not just expose you. I will ruin you."

"Victoria will never get a single Verman secret from me," Lucas said.

A bright blue window shattered the air next to Harrison’s head.

Lucas stood up from the leather booth. He adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke suit and offered the lead investor a polite nod.

"Enjoy your scotch, Harrison," Lucas said.

He turned and walked out of the dimly lit lounge. He navigated the heavy oak doors and stepped back onto the bustling city sidewalk.

The crisp autumn air filled his lungs. He had just survived a lethal blind spot in his operation by turning Camilla’s most dangerous watchdog into an ally.

He pulled his cracked smartphone from his pocket.

He had a text message waiting for him. It was from Camilla.

The press release for the expansion goes live on Monday. Come to the penthouse. The door is unlocked.

Lucas felt a familiar spike of heat in his chest. The corporate war was paused for the weekend.

Victoria was waiting for her trap to spring, and Harrison was busy reviewing his newly acquired assets. The board was satisfied.

He hailed a taxi and gave the driver the address to Camilla’s private residence.

He arrived at the towering glass fortress and rode the private elevator up to the top floor. He did not need to enter a security code this time. The heavy metal doors slid open and he stepped into the massive, sprawling penthouse.

The sun was beginning to set, casting long golden shadows across the Italian marble floors.

"Lucas."

He turned toward the sound of her melodic voice.

Camilla Verman was waiting for him in the center of the living room. She had changed out of her dark green corporate dress.

She was wearing a sheer, floor-length silk robe in a deep crimson hue that left very little to the imagination. She held two crystal glasses of red wine.

She walked slowly toward him. The confident, predatory sway of her hips was mesmerizing.

"You successfully scrubbed your servers?" Camilla asked softly as she handed him a glass.

"Every trace is gone," Lucas said. He took the wine but did not drink it. He set the glass down on the nearest console table. "Victoria Sterling cannot touch me anymore."

Camilla smiled. It was a look of pure, territorial satisfaction. She reached out and grabbed the lapels of his charcoal suit jacket.

She stepped into his space, letting the heat of her body radiate against him. The scent of dark cherry and vanilla enveloped him.

"So it’s just you and me now," Camilla whispered.

"It is," Lucas agreed.

He wrapped his arms around her narrow waist and lifted her off the marble floor.

Camilla let out a soft, delighted laugh and wrapped her legs around his hips.
