Chapter 32: Monday Market

  • Next Chapter

The weekend faded into a blur of tangled silk sheets and hushed conversations in the dark.

Monday morning arrived with a sharp golden light cutting through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse. Lucas stood near the glass.

He wore his tailored trousers and a fresh white dress shirt, leaving the top two buttons undone. He held a cup of black coffee and watched the city wake up below.

Camilla walked up behind him.

She wore a short black silk slip that hung loosely from her shoulders. She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her chin against his back.

Her physical affection was no longer a calculated performance for her security team or the press. It was genuine.

Lucas had her now.

"The market opens in an hour," Camilla murmured. Her voice was thick with sleep and anticipation.

"Are you ready for the fallout?" Lucas asked.

Camilla let out a soft laugh. She pressed a kiss to the space between his shoulder blades. "I have been waiting for this day for three years. When my press release goes live, her board of directors is going to demand answers she does not have."

Lucas took a sip of his coffee. The dark roast was bitter on his tongue.

He had spent the last two days letting Camilla believe she had secured the ultimate victory.

He had not mentioned the environmental liability clause hidden on page forty-seven. He had not mentioned that Victoria Sterling was sitting in her own high-rise office, waiting to spring a trap designed to bankrupt her.

He just had to trust that his Corporate Espionage Forgery skill had worked. If he altered the routing numbers incorrectly, Camilla was going to lose her empire by lunch.

"Get dressed," Camilla instructed as she stepped away. She walked toward the master bathroom. "Harrison wants us in the boardroom when the news drops."

An hour later, they walked into the Verman Development headquarters.

The corporate atmosphere was electric. Junior analysts and senior architects were crowded around the glass-walled boardroom.

Camilla sat at the head of the massive marble table. She wore a sharp emerald suit that matched her eyes. Lucas sat in the chair directly to her right.

Harrison sat across the table. The lead investor looked at Lucas and offered a single, imperceptible nod.

Harrison still believed Lucas was a mastermind who had robbed Vertex Management blind to secure this deal.

Mads, the acquisitions director, stood near a large digital monitor displaying the major financial news networks. He held a tablet in his sweating hands.

"Five seconds," Mads announced. His voice trembled with excitement.

Camilla leaned forward and rested her manicured hands on the marble table. She did not look at the screen. She looked at Lucas. She offered him a fierce, triumphant smile.

"Execute," Camilla commanded.

Mads tapped the screen of his tablet.

The press release hit the wire services. The digital monitor in the boardroom flashed. A breaking news banner crawled across the bottom of the screen on a major financial network.

Verman Development Secures Exclusive Financial District Expansion.

The boardroom erupted.

Executives clapped and cheered. Mads let out a loud breath of relief. Harrison picked up his phone as it immediately began to ring with calls from other hungry investors.

The Verman Development stock ticker on the corner of the screen ticked upward in real time.

Camilla turned to Lucas.

She ignored the crowded room and grabbed the lapels of his suit jacket. She pulled him in and kissed him hard. It was a chaotic, public display of ownership and gratitude.

Lucas kissed her back. He felt the heavy weight of the moment pressing against his ribs. She was celebrating a victory that was currently armed with a detonator.

His cracked smartphone vibrated in his jacket pocket.

Lucas pulled away from Camilla. He glanced at the screen.

Victoria Sterling.

"The press is already calling," Camilla noted as her own phone began to light up. She looked at the ringing device in his hand. "Is that a reporter?"

"A minor consultant," Lucas lied smoothly. "I need to take this. I will be right back."

"Do not take too long," Camilla said. She turned her attention back to the cheering executives.

Lucas stepped out of the glass boardroom. He walked down the sleek corridor until he found an empty alcove near the elevators. The noise of the celebration faded into a muffled hum. He swiped the green icon and brought the phone to his ear.

"Ms. Sterling," Lucas answered.

"She took the bait," Victoria said. Her voice lacked its usual icy control. It vibrated with a dark, predatory thrill. "I am watching the news networks. She just publicly claimed ownership of the expansion."

"The market is reacting," Lucas replied.

"Good," Victoria sneered. "The higher her stock climbs this morning, the harder she falls when the liability hits the ledger. My legal team is executing the regulatory default right now. The environmental penalty clause is active."

Lucas closed his eyes. The trap was sprung.

"How long until the asset transfer completes?" Lucas asked.

"The banking protocols are automated," Victoria explained. "The contract forces Vertex Management to process the penalty fee from the liable party. It will drain her liquidity and route it directly into my primary holding reserve. It should take less than three minutes."

Victoria paused. The sound of a keyboard clacking echoed over the phone line.

"Get back to Vertex," Victoria instructed. Her voice dropped to a low, triumphant purr. "You earned your seat at the table today."

"I am on my way," Lucas said.

The line clicked dead.

Lucas lowered the phone. He leaned his shoulder against the cool glass wall of the alcove.

He did not move toward the elevators. He just waited. He mentally opened the System interface and stared at the empty blue space, waiting for the verification.

Two minutes passed. The celebration in the boardroom down the hall continued to roar.

A sharp, high-priority notification suddenly shattered the air in front of his face.

[Massive Liquidity Shift Detected.]

[The forged routing numbers on page forty-seven have been successfully processed by the automated banking protocol.]

[Amount: $85,000,000 transferred.]

[Origin: Vertex Management Corporate Reserves.]

[Destination: Camilla Verman Offshore Trust.]

Lucas let out a slow, heavy exhale.

The forgery held. The automated system had read the liability clause just as Victoria intended, but it followed the altered routing numbers.

Instead of siphoning money out of Camilla’s accounts, Vertex Management had just paid an eighty-five million dollar environmental penalty directly to Camilla’s untraceable offshore trust.

His phone began to vibrate violently in his hand.

It was Victoria again.

Lucas braced himself. He hit the answer button and raised the phone to his ear. He did not speak.

The silence on the line was terrifying. There was no triumphant purr. There was no sound of typing. There was only the sound of shallow, ragged breathing.

"Lucas," Victoria whispered. Her voice sounded hollow.

"I am here," Lucas said. He maintained his Somatic Composure.

"Eighty-five million dollars just left my primary reserve," Victoria stated.

The cold corporate monarch was gone. She sounded like a woman who had just watched her house catch fire.

"The system routed a penalty payment out of my accounts. It is gone."

"That is impossible," Lucas injected the perfect amount of shock into his voice. "You said the contract was designed to seize her assets."

"It was," Victoria snapped. The panic morphed into sudden, lethal rage. "Someone altered the routing numbers in the physical contract before she signed it. Someone redirected the blast zone."

Lucas kept his heart rate steady. "Could Camilla’s legal team have caught it?"

"If her lawyers caught it, they would have voided the deal," Victoria hissed. "They would not have countersigned a forged liability clause. This was an inside job. Someone in my legal department sabotaged the paperwork before I handed it to you."

Lucas realized the genius of his Corporate Espionage Forgery skill.

He had altered the document so flawlessly that Victoria did not even suspect him.

She believed he was just the messenger who carried a poisoned file. She thought her own elite legal team had betrayed her.

"Where are you?" Victoria demanded.

"I am leaving her building now," Lucas lied.

"Get here," Victoria ordered. The venom in her voice was thick enough to choke on. "I am locking down the executive floor. Nobody leaves the legal department. You are going to help me find the mole who did this, and when I find them, I am going to ruin their life."

The call ended.

Lucas slipped the phone back into his pocket. He stood in the quiet alcove and stared at the floor.

He was holding the leash to Camilla Verman. He had the respect of a ruthless board investor.

And now, he had the founder of Vertex Management begging him to help hunt down a ghost.

He was close to taming another fierce woman.
