Milf Acquisition System
Chapter 30: Physical Paper Trail
Lucas held the heavy biometric lockbox in his hands. The sleek black metal felt cold against his palms.
He looked at Evelyn. His landlady was standing a few feet away with her arms crossed tightly over her chest.
She was purposely avoiding eye contact. The memory of her midnight phone call hung heavily in the narrow hallway between them.
She was wrestling with her own guilt and the sudden intrusion of this strange corporate package only made her more uncomfortable.
"I signed for it because the courier was going to leave it on the stoop," Evelyn murmured. She took another step back toward her basement stairs. "I did not want someone to steal it."
"Thank you, Evelyn," Lucas said gently. "I appreciate you watching out for me."
Evelyn offered a tight, polite nod. "Just keeping the hallway clear. Have a good afternoon, Lucas."
She turned and hurried down the stairs to her apartment. The heavy door clicked shut at the bottom of the stairwell, sealing her safely away from whatever corporate warfare he had dragged into her building.
Lucas carried the lockbox up to his own apartment.
He locked his deadbolt and set the heavy box on his wobbly dining table. The System had warned him that Harrison’s private investigator bypassed the digital firewall.
Victoria’s elite cyber security team could erase server logs and forge Ivy League alumni registries, but they could not erase the physical world.
He pressed his right thumb against the glowing biometric scanner on top of the box.
The scanner flashed green. A hydraulic hiss sounded as the thick metal lid popped open.
Lucas stared at the open lid. Harrison had never taken his fingerprints. Then he remembered the coffee cups.
He had carried dozens of them through the Vertex lobby every morning and tossed the empties in the street bins outside. Anyone patient enough could have lifted a clean print off one of them.
Lucas looked inside. There was no bomb and no dramatically placed weapon. There was only a thick manila envelope and a cheap prepaid burner phone resting on top of it.
He reached in and pulled out the envelope. He opened the clasp and slid the contents onto the table.
Three high-resolution photographs spilled across the scratched wood.
Lucas stared at them. His stomach dropped.
The first photo showed him walking through the front doors of Vertex Management this afternoon. The second was shot with a long lens from the building across the street.
It showed him standing in Victoria’s executive suite, tapping his glass of scotch against hers.
The third photo was the worst. Victoria stood close to him with her hand resting flat on his chest. A digital timestamp glowed in the corner of every frame. He had walked into Vertex barely an hour after leaving Camilla’s office.
Harrison’s private investigator had not bothered trying to hack the Vertex servers. The investigator had followed the paper trail to the Vertex lobby. Then he had simply followed Lucas. He sat in the building across the street with a camera while Victoria poured the scotch.
The digital firewall was flawless, but the physical paper trail had damned him.
The cheap burner phone inside the lockbox suddenly began to ring.
The harsh electronic tone cut through the quiet apartment. Lucas stared at the device. He knew exactly who was waiting on the other end of the line.
He picked up the phone and pressed the answer button.
"Mr. Vintage," Harrison’s voice echoed through the speaker. The lead investor sounded calm, aristocratic, and completely in control. "Or should I say, Victoria Sterling’s man?"
"Harrison," Lucas replied. He forced his breathing to remain steady, calling on his Somatic Composure.
"Your digital footprint is a masterpiece," Harrison noted. The older man did not sound angry; he sounded thoroughly unimpressed.
"My risk management analysts hit a military-grade firewall when they tried to look into your international portfolios. So I hired a man who prefers to knock on doors instead of pinging servers.
He found your paper trail in a filing cabinet. Then he followed you."
"What do you want?" Lucas asked.
"I want to protect Camilla’s investments," Harrison stated flatly. "She is a brilliant developer, but she has a massive blind spot when it comes to her own ego. She thinks you left Victoria for her. But you walked out of her office and went straight back to Vertex to drink with your real boss.
You are Victoria’s plant inside Verman Development. I will not let a spy sleep in my lead developer’s bed."
Lucas processed the threat. Harrison was acting purely on what he knew.
The lead investor did not know about Victoria Sterling’s poisoned trap, and he certainly did not know that Lucas had just altered that trap to make Camilla richer.
Harrison simply thought Lucas was still working for Victoria.
"I am not working for Victoria," Lucas said smoothly.
"You are a liability," Harrison countered. "And I eliminate liabilities. You have exactly three hours to pack your bags and leave this city. Do not call her.
Do not text her. You vanish completely.
If you are not gone by sunset, I will place those photographs directly on her desk, and then I will have you arrested for corporate espionage."
The line clicked dead.
Lucas lowered the burner phone. The trap was closing in on him from a completely blind angle.
If he ran, Camilla would assume he had betrayed her and stolen her secrets. She would hunt him down. Victoria would also hunt him down for abandoning the mission.
If he stayed and Harrison showed Camilla the photos, the entire engagement narrative would shatter.
Camilla believed he had betrayed Victoria and chosen her.
The timestamps would tell her he had never defected at all. She would realize she had surrendered her body and her trust to Victoria’s spy.
Her pride would demand his absolute destruction.
He needed to confront Harrison directly. He could not run, and he could not hide. He had to face a ruthless board member and force him to stand down.
Lucas mentally opened the System interface.
[Current AP Balance: 800]
He scrolled through the Skill Shop. He needed a psychological weapon capable of disarming a man who held all the physical leverage.
[Leverage Inversion (Level 1) - Cost: 500 AP]
[Description: Grants the Host the strategic intuition to weaponize an opponent’s threat against them. Automatically highlights the structural weaknesses in an enemy’s blackmail material.]
Lucas confirmed the purchase.
The familiar warm pressure bloomed behind his eyes. His mind rapidly processed the new strategic frameworks.
He looked down at the photographs of himself toasting with Victoria.
The panic that had been gripping his chest evaporated. He saw the exact flaw in Harrison’s threat.
Harrison cared about the money. He cared about the stability of the Verman Development board.
If Harrison exposed Lucas, the massive PR scandal would tank the company’s stock. Harrison would burn his own investments just to get rid of a fake fiancé.
Lucas picked up his cracked personal smartphone and dialed the number he had memorized from Camilla’s board registry.
Harrison answered on the second ring. "I told you to pack, Mr. Vintage."
"I am not leaving," Lucas said. His voice carried the dark, persuasive resonance of his Silver Tongue skill. "And you are not going to show her those photos."
Harrison scoffed. "Are you calling my bluff?"
"I am calling a meeting," Lucas corrected him. "You want to protect Camilla’s money. So do I. If you blow up this engagement right now, the press will destroy her reputation and your stock portfolio will bleed out by Monday morning. You need me just as much as she does."
Silence hung on the line. Harrison was a man of cold logic, and Lucas had just hit him directly in the wallet.
"The Oak Room," Harrison finally said. "It is a private club in the financial district. Be there in thirty minutes. If you waste my time, I make the call."
"I will be there," Lucas said.
He ended the call and tossed the burner phone into the trash can. He gathered the photographs, sliding them back into the manila envelope. He needed to bring the evidence with him.
He walked into his bathroom and splashed cold water on his face. He checked his tailored charcoal suit in the mirror.
He did not look like a man who had been caught. He looked like a man ready to walk into the lion’s den and negotiate with the predator.
A bright blue window shattered the air next to his reflection.
[High-Stakes Confrontation Generated!]
[Target: Harrison (Lead Investor)]
[Objective: Neutralize the blackmail threat without exposing your double-agent status to Camilla Verman or Victoria Sterling.]
[Reward: 600 AP and Board Level Influence.]
[Failure Penalty: Total exposure and financial ruin.]
Lucas adjusted his cuffs and stepped out of the bathroom.
He was going to sit down with Camilla’s most dangerous investor and convince him that Victoria Sterling’s man was the best thing that had ever happened to his company.
