Chapter 14: Lockout and the Leftovers

  • Next Chapter

The luxury town car dropped Lucas off at the corner of his street.

He watched the sleek black vehicle disappear into the city traffic before turning to face his decaying apartment building.

The contrast gave him a strange sense of whiplash.

He had spent the evening dining with a millionaire in a restaurant where the appetizers cost more than his monthly grocery budget.

Now he was standing under a flickering streetlamp on a sidewalk covered in damp autumn leaves.

He walked through the cracked glass doors of his building and began the familiar climb up the three flights of stairs.

The bespoke charcoal suit felt heavy on his shoulders. He was exhausted. Playing psychological chess with Camilla Verman had drained every ounce of his mental energy.

He reached his floor and walked down the narrow hallway toward his door. He reached into his trouser pockets to grab his keys.

His fingers brushed against empty silk lining.

Lucas froze. He checked his jacket pockets and then patted himself down again. A sinking feeling settled in his stomach as his tired brain retraced his steps. He had thrown his keys onto the kitchen counter yesterday afternoon.

Then he packed his cheap canvas duffel bag and took it to Camilla’s penthouse.

The keys were currently sitting behind a locked door and his only spare set was inside a billionaire’s closet across town.

He rested his forehead against the peeling paint of his apartment door and let out a long breath. He had successfully outmaneuvered two of the most dangerous women in the financial district but he had defeated himself with basic logistics.

He was locked out.

Footsteps echoed from the stairwell. Lucas turned his head and saw Evelyn walking up the final flight of stairs.

His landlady was holding a clipboard and a ring of heavy brass keys.

She was doing her late night rounds to check the hallway radiators. She had traded her floral wrap dress for a pair of soft gray sweatpants and an oversized knitted sweater that hung loosely off one shoulder.

Her hair was down and cascaded in thick brown waves past her collarbone.

She stopped walking when she saw him standing motionless in front of his door. Her sharp eyes swept over his tailored suit and the defeated slump of his shoulders.

"Did the big corporate promotion forget to issue you a personal door opener?" Evelyn asked. Her voice held a hint of dry amusement.

"I left my keys inside," Lucas admitted while gesturing to the locked deadbolt. "I packed a bag for a work trip and left my ring on the counter. Do you have the master key on you?"

Evelyn looked at the heavy ring in her hand and sighed.

"These are just the boiler room and utility keys. The master lockbox is in the basement office and the electronic keypad on that door jammed this afternoon. I am waiting for a locksmith to come fix it tomorrow morning."

Lucas rubbed his tired eyes. He had nowhere else to go. Returning to the penthouse was not an option since Camilla had explicitly told him to go home.

He was supposed to give her space to process his massive emotional bluff.

Showing up at her door an hour later because he forgot his keys would ruin the entire illusion he had built.

"I can just sleep on the stairs," Lucas offered. "It will not be the worst night I have ever had."

Evelyn stared at him for a long moment. She crossed her arms over her chest. The oversized sweater shifted and drew his attention to the generous curves hidden beneath the thick fabric.

She looked at his expensive suit and then back up to his exhausted face.

"Do not be ridiculous," Evelyn murmured softly. "You look like you are about to pass out standing up. Come downstairs. You can sleep on my couch."

"Are you sure?" Lucas asked. "I do not want to intrude."

"You fixed my radiator," Evelyn said while turning around and heading back toward the stairs. "Consider this a return of the favor. Do not make me offer twice before I change my mind."

Lucas followed her down to the ground floor.

He stepped into her apartment and the warm air immediately washed over him. The iron radiator beneath her window was humming with steady heat.

The small living space smelled like sweet vanilla and roasted garlic. It was a grounded and comforting atmosphere that felt miles away from the ruthless corporate warfare he had been fighting all week.

"You can put your jacket on the chair," Evelyn instructed as she walked into her small kitchen. "Have you eaten?"

"I had a dinner meeting," Lucas said while slipping off his bespoke jacket. He draped it carefully over the back of a dining chair. "But I did not actually eat much."

He realized he had spent the entire time at The Obsidian Room calculating his words and analyzing Camilla’s body language.

He had barely touched his expensive seafood. His stomach chose that exact moment to let out a loud rumble.

Evelyn laughed. It was a warm sound that made the tired lines around her eyes soften.

"Sit at the table," she said while opening her refrigerator. "I made roasted chicken and potatoes earlier. I can heat up a plate for you."

Lucas unbuttoned the top two buttons of his dress shirt and sat down at the small wooden table. He watched her move around the kitchen.

She moved with a relaxed domestic grace. He appreciated the quiet intimacy of the moment. He did not have to filter his words or worry about hidden microphones in this room.

A few minutes later she placed a steaming plate of food in front of him. She poured two glasses of water and sat down across from him.

"Thank you Mrs. Higgins," Lucas said before taking a bite. The food was simple but it tasted better than anything the private chef had prepared at the luxury restaurant.

"Call me Evelyn," she corrected him gently. She rested her chin on her hand and watched him eat. "You look different tonight Lucas. And I do not just mean the expensive clothes. You look older. You carry yourself differently than the boy who was begging for a rent extension two days ago."

Lucas paused with his fork halfway to his mouth. "My new job requires a lot of confidence. I spend my days dealing with people who will eat you alive if you show weakness. I guess I am just trying to adapt to the environment."

Evelyn reached out and picked up her water glass. "It suits you. But you should be careful. Rich people play games with rules they change whenever they start losing. Do not let them turn you into something you hate."

"I will try my best," Lucas promised.

They fell into a comfortable silence.

Lucas finished his plate and pushed it forward. He felt the heavy weight of the day finally catching up to him. His muscles ached and his eyes burned.

Evelyn stood up to grab his empty plate. She reached across the small table. Her hip brushed against the edge of the wood and her hand grazed his forearm as she picked up the ceramic dish.

The physical contact was fleeting but he felt the warmth of her skin through his thin dress shirt.

She paused. She did not immediately pull her hand away.

She looked down at his arm and then met his eyes. The tired landlady persona seemed to crack for a fraction of a second. She was standing very close.

The sweet scent of vanilla filled his lungs. He noticed the faint flush of pink rising on her neck.

A sharp digital chime rang inside his skull.

The world tinted blue as a high priority notification materialized in the air directly between them.

Lucas blinked rapidly but the glowing text remained anchored in his vision.

[Acquisition Quest Generated!]

[Target: Evelyn Higgins]

[Objective: Capitalize on the target’s current vulnerability and establish intimate physical dependency.]

[Task: Get a handjob from the target before sunrise.]

[Reward: 400 AP and Skill Evolution.]

[Failure Penalty: The target will rationalize her attraction as a mistake. Permanent decrease in target interest and loss of romantic momentum.]

Lucas stared at the hovering words.

His tired brain struggled to process the absurd demand the System had just dropped into his lap.

He was sitting in his landlady’s kitchen. She had just kindly offered him her couch and a plate of leftover chicken because he was locked out of his apartment.

The System was now ordering him to convince this strict exhausted forty-six-year-old woman to give him a handjob before morning. ℴ

If he made the wrong move she would not just kick him out of her apartment. She would likely evict him from the building and call the police.

Evelyn tilted her head slightly. She noticed his sudden stillness.

Her hand was still resting lightly against his forearm.

"Lucas?" Evelyn asked softly. "Is something wrong?"

Lucas looked at her brown eyes and then glanced back at the glowing blue text demanding he escalate the situation.

He wasn’t sure what to do.
