Chapter 13: Unbroken Snare
The Obsidian Room grew quieter as the evening stretched on.
The ambient lighting dimmed and cast warm shadows across Camilla’s face.
The harsh lines of her aristocratic features softened as she finished her second glass of wine.
She had spent the last hour asking Lucas about his supposed travels and his opinions on market trends.
Lucas wove the lies of his forged background with genuine pieces of his own personality.
He talked about his ambition and his desire to build something permanent.
Camilla listened with a steady intensity that made him feel like he was the only person in the crowded restaurant.
It almost felt like they were actually bonding, as though fake relationship was bleeding into dangerous territory.
Camilla rested her chin on her hand and offered a soft genuine smile. "You are much more interesting than I anticipated Lucas. I expected a nervous corporate drone willing to do whatever I said for a paycheck. You actually have a spine."
"I try to keep it straight," Lucas replied while taking a sip of his wine.
A sharp buzz vibrated against the table.
Camilla glanced down at her phone resting near her glass. The soft smile vanished from her face in an instant.
Her green eyes locked onto the illuminated screen and her posture went entirely rigid.
Lucas activated his Advanced Body Language Reading.
He watched the subtle flex of her jaw and the sudden erratic spike in her breathing.
She was expecting a message from her digital forensics team confirming that Victoria had panicked and moved the offshore funds.
She was expecting the final piece of evidence she needed to destroy her rival and secure her victory.
The screen displayed a short encrypted text message.
No closed account linked - Target has not moved. Trap is empty.
The world seemed to stop for Camilla Verman.
Her mind raced as she processed the information.
Her entire master plan was built on the assumption that Lucas was a loyal spy who would immediately run to Victoria with the blackmail material.
She had brought him into her home, into her bed.
She had left the tablet out.
She had given him the perfect window of opportunity. The trap was flawless.
But Victoria had not acted because Lucas had not told her.
Camilla slowly lifted her gaze from the phone and looked at Lucas.
Her eyes were wide with a mixture of confusion and shock.
Her grand plan had failed, simply because the man she expected to betray her – did not do it.
"Why?" Camilla asked all of a sudden. Her voice was barely a whisper.
Lucas set his wine glass down and frowned. "Why what?"
"What you saw on my tablet this morning," Camilla said. The corporate mask had completely fallen away. She was not acting anymore. She was staring at him like he was an unsolvable puzzle. "The medical records. The accounts. You saw them. You could have told it all to Victoria. Why didn’t you?"
Lucas stayed quiet for a long moment.
He felt the heavy weight of the moment pressing down on him.
This was the turning point. If he gave the wrong answer she would realize he knew it was a trap and she would discard him.
He needed to spin this into a massive emotional victory.
He mentally opened the System interface and spent his remaining points.
[Silver Tongue (Level 1) - Cost: 200 AP]

The skill activated with a warm rush of clarity.
He looked at Camilla and let the heavy silence stretch just long enough to build the tension.
"I should have," Lucas said softly.
His voice carried a rich and steady resonance that commanded her full attention.
"If I took that information to Victoria I could save her career. I could demand enough money for it to set myself up for life. I could demand enough to make that audio recording you have against me entirely useless."
Camilla swallowed hard. Her hands gripped the edge of the table.
"Then why didn’t you?"
Lucas leaned forward slightly. He let his eyes drop to her lips before meeting her gaze again.
"I have been asking myself the same question the whole day," Lucas said as his voice dropped to a rougher register. "And I think I have an answer now...."
"I still remember the heat of your body against mine, the feel of your skin on my palm when I gripped your hips in bed."
Camilla parted her lips but no sound came out. The sheer audacity of his words hit her like a physical blow.
"What the hell are you saying?" Camilla whispered breathlessly.
"I am saying bringing you down is what Victoria wants," Lucas continued with unwavering eye contact. "And destroying her is what you want. But me..."
"You?" Camilla asked. Her voice trembled slightly. "What do you want?"
Lucas reached across the table but did not grab her hand. He let his fingers rest lightly against her wrist.
"I want you," Lucas stated with absolute conviction.
Even he couldn’t believe how perfectly he delivered that line. And he wasn’t done yet.
"And I know this is only pretend. But if I can get paid to hold you in my arms every night then I would not trade this job for anything. Not even all the money Victoria could offer me."
The silence that followed was deafening.
Camilla stared at him.
Her chest rose and fell with rapid uneven breaths.
She was a multi millionaire who controlled massive real estate empires and ruined men for sport.
But right now she looked completely disarmed.
She did not know how to process a man discarding millions of dollars just for the chance to be near her.
She pulled her hand away and stood up from the booth.
Lucas stood up as well.
He prepared himself for an explosion of rage. He assumed a possibility he had pushed the boundary too far.
Camilla stepped close to him. She ignored the other patrons in the restaurant.
She raised her hand and placed her palm gently against his cheek.
Her skin was warm and her thumb brushed lightly against his jawline. She looked deeply into his eyes searching for any sign of a lie.
Thanks to his System skills he projected nothing but calm genuine desire.
"Go home Lucas," Camilla said. Her voice was thick with an emotion she was desperately trying to suppress. "The gala is this weekend. I will have someone come get you."
She dropped her hand and turned around.
She walked out of the dimly lit restaurant without looking back.
Her security team immediately fell into step behind her.
Lucas stood alone by the table. He let out a long shaky exhale and rubbed his jaw where her hand had rested.
"Did I just get kicked out of her house?" Lucas muttered to himself. He felt a sudden wave of panic.
He had played the romantic angle too aggressively and she had sent him packing.
A bright blue window suddenly shattered the air in front of his face.
[Critical Emotional Strike Successful!]
[Target’s worldview has been shattered. The target genuinely believes you sacrificed a fortune out of raw physical and romantic desire for her.]
[Target Dependency Level increased by 40%.]
[Loyalty Tier Upgraded: Acquaintance -> Intrigued Asset.]
[Reward: 500 AP awarded.]
Lucas stared at the massive notification.
The System was confirming what his anxiety refused to believe.
She had not kicked him out because she was angry.
She had sent him away because he had successfully breached her defenses and she needed time to panic in private.
He smiled as he picked up his jacket.
The millionaire was finally starting to crack.
