"There are too many reasons."

The little action was simple.

But the people around them saw it.

The current city lord, several elders and thousands of cultivators all watched in complete silence.

One young male cultivator lowered his head, clearly unable to look directly at them.

Someone whispered, "They really are still together."

Another person replied, "Of course they are."

Mo Yuxin’s attention shifted to them.

The whispering stopped immediately.

She sighed.

"Everyone is staring."

Su Yubing smiled.

"Let them stare."

Then she took Mo Yuxin’s arm and leaned against her.

"We are married."

Mo Yuxin’s lips curved upward.

"Exactly."

The city lord looked like he did not know whether he should laugh or cry.

"Please, Ancestors, come inside."

Mo Yuxin looked at Su Yubing.

Su Yubing nodded.

They walked through the gate.

The instant they crossed the threshold, the entire city changed.

A bell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then hundreds of bells throughout the city started ringing together.

The sound traveled through the streets and over the mountains.

Golden light rose from the ground.

Every formation in the city lit up.

The roads began glowing with ancient patterns.

The black tower in the distance trembled.

And on the surface of the city walls, four enormous words appeared.

THE RETURN HAS BEGUN.

Luo Tianhe’s face changed.

"That should not have happened."

Mo Yuxin glanced at him.

"What should have happened?"

"The city has never reacted like this before."

Su Yubing looked amused.

"So your city has a personality?"

"No."

Luo Tianhe swallowed.

"It has a history."

Mo Yuxin looked toward the black tower again.

"Tell us everything."

Luo Tianhe took a breath.

"Not here. There are too many eyes."

Mo Yuxin looked around.

"You mean there are people inside the city who shouldn’t hear this?"

The city lord nodded.

"Yes."

Mo Yuxin smiled slightly.

"Then take us somewhere private."

The old man looked relieved.

"Of course."

They followed him deeper into the city.

Homeward City was much stranger than it first appeared.

At the outer edge, everything looked almost normal. There were ordinary shops, restaurants, inns and markets. Cultivators bargained over spirit herbs. Mortals sold food. Children ran through the streets. Weapon shops displayed flying swords behind glass panels. A group of young disciples argued loudly over who had cheated during a card game.

It looked exactly like the kind of cultivation city that appeared in countless novels.

Then they passed the second district.

The spiritual energy became thicker.

The roads widened.

Floating markets appeared overhead.

There were giant arenas where cultivators fought for resources.

One enormous restaurant had three floors suspended in the sky, connected to the ground by floating staircases.

Several sect disciples were standing outside arguing with a waiter because someone had charged them too much for a bottle of spirit wine.

Mo Yuxin looked at the scene.

"Very normal."

Su Yubing nodded.

"Too normal."

They walked on.

At the third district, the atmosphere became completely different.

There were no mortals.

Almost everyone here was at least Core Formation.

A group of Nascent Soul cultivators were talking near a stone pavilion.

When Mo Yuxin and Su Yubing walked past, the group fell silent.

One cultivator stood up.

His face was filled with disbelief.

"Impossible."

Mo Yuxin kept walking.

The man suddenly rushed after them.

"Senior!"

Mo Yuxin stopped.

Su Yubing sighed quietly.

"Here we go."

The man stopped several steps away.

"Are you really..."

He couldn’t finish the sentence.

Mo Yuxin waited.

He swallowed.

"Are you really Mo Yuxin?"

Mo Yuxin’s gaze became slightly sharper.

"How do you know my name?"

The man immediately lowered his head.

"The records."

"What records?"

Before he could answer, Luo Tianhe stepped forward.

"Enough."

The man shut his mouth.

Mo Yuxin’s expression remained calm.

She knew they were missing a huge piece of the story.

But she was not in a hurry.

They had plenty of time.

At least, that was what she thought.

The city lord eventually brought them to an isolated residence near the central mountain.

It was not extravagant.

There was a small courtyard, a tea room and a pond filled with golden fish.

Luo Tianhe invited them inside.

Mo Yuxin and Su Yubing sat together on one side of the table.

The old man sat across from them.

He poured tea with trembling hands.

"Before I explain, there is one thing you need to understand."

Mo Yuxin lifted the cup.

"Go on."

"Homeward City is not part of the normal Southern Continent."

Su Yubing looked at him.

"Then what is it?"

"A refuge."

Mo Yuxin said nothing.

Luo Tianhe continued.

"Long ago, a catastrophe almost destroyed the cultivation world. It wasn’t a war between sects. It wasn’t a demonic invasion. It wasn’t even a heavenly tribulation. Something much older awakened beneath the world."

Su Yubing frowned.

"An ancient beast?"

"No."

"A formation?"

"No."

"A remnant soul?"

"No."

Mo Yuxin put down her tea.

"Then what?"

Luo Tianhe looked toward the black tower.

"A door."

The room became quiet.

"A door?"

"A door that should never be opened."

Luo Tianhe’s voice became lower.

"The oldest records say that there are places outside this world. They are not other continents. They are not secret realms. They are places beyond the normal flow of time. Once, something opened one of those doors. The things that came through nearly ended everything."

Su Yubing leaned back.

"And we built this city to guard it?"

Luo Tianhe shook his head.

"You built it."

Mo Yuxin stared at him.

"Still saying that."

"Because it is true."

The old man reached beneath the table and brought out an old jade scroll.

It was so ancient that the surface had turned almost black.

He placed it on the table.

"This is the oldest surviving record of the city."

Mo Yuxin touched it.

The jade immediately reacted.

Golden light flashed.

Words appeared in the air.

Two names were written at the top.

MO YUXIN.

SU YUBING.

Below the names was a sentence.

THEY WILL RETURN WHEN THE CITY FORGETS WHY IT WAS BUILT.
