Maybe My Soulmate! (GL)
Chapter 299: Skyfall city 11.
Then Su Yubing whispered, "I think our trip became a little more complicated."
Mo Yuxin squeezed her hand.
"A little."
Behind them, the road disappeared.
Ahead, the impossible city waited.
And somewhere inside it, something that had known their names for countless lifetimes was already walking toward them.
The first gate opened wider.
The stars went dark.
And the journey truly began.
Mo Yuxin stared at the three words above the gate for a long moment.
WELCOME HOME.
They were not carved into stone. They were not painted onto a wooden board. The words seemed to be floating in the darkness above the enormous gate, formed from pale golden light. Each character carried a faint pressure that made the air tremble, yet neither Mo Yuxin nor Su Yubing could feel any killing intent from them.
That was what made the situation even stranger.
Normally, when cultivators encountered something beyond their understanding, the first thing they did was become alert. Mo Yuxin had developed that habit long ago. She would look for formations, hidden killing intent, soul fluctuations, spatial distortions and anything else that might turn a harmless-looking road into a death trap.
This time she did all of that.
Then she stopped.
There was nothing.
No killing formation.
No illusion.
No hidden beast.
No spiritual energy fluctuation that matched any known cultivation technique.
The city in front of them was simply there.
And somehow, thousands of people inside it had looked at the two of them and bowed as if they had been waiting for their arrival for a very long time.
Su Yubing gently pulled on Mo Yuxin’s hand.
"You have that face again."
Mo Yuxin looked at her.
"What face?"
"The face you make when you are trying to figure out whether something is worth destroying."
Mo Yuxin blinked.
"I don’t have such a face."
Su Yubing smiled.
"You absolutely do."
Mo Yuxin thought about it for a moment before nodding seriously.
"Then you should keep holding my hand."
Su Yubing’s smile widened.
"Why?"
"So I don’t accidentally destroy anything."
"That’s a terrible excuse."
"It worked."
"Unfortunately, yes."
Su Yubing moved a little closer until their shoulders touched.
Mo Yuxin’s expression softened immediately.
The road behind them had already vanished. Even if they wanted to retreat, there was nowhere to go. The only thing left was the gigantic city ahead.
The people inside had not moved.
They remained bowed.
Thousands of cultivators.
Some looked young.
Some looked old.
Some were clearly mortal.
Some were at the Foundation Establishment stage.
Some were Core Formation cultivators.
There were even several Nascent Soul cultivators among them.
Mo Yuxin noticed that immediately.
She also noticed something else.
None of those Nascent Soul cultivators were looking at her cultivation level.
They were looking at her face.
More precisely, they were looking at the two of them as if they were looking at people they had not seen in a very long time.
One elderly man standing at the front slowly raised his head.
He was wearing a gray robe with a small silver city emblem on his chest. His hair was white, his eyebrows long and his face full of wrinkles. Yet his eyes were extremely clear.
He looked at Mo Yuxin first.
Then Su Yubing.
Then their intertwined hands.
The old man’s lips trembled.
"It really is you."
Mo Yuxin calmly asked, "Who are you?"
The old man froze.
The people behind him also looked stunned.
One young woman whispered, "She doesn’t remember."
A middle-aged man beside her shook his head.
"How could she?"
The old man quickly raised one hand and silenced them.
He walked toward the gate.
Mo Yuxin did not move.
Su Yubing leaned close to her and whispered, "This feels like one of those ancient inheritance plots."
Mo Yuxin whispered back, "There is usually a dead old man involved."
Su Yubing glanced at the elderly man.
"He seems alive."
"For now."
The old man stopped several steps away.
He bowed deeply.
"I am Luo Tianhe, current city lord of Homeward City."
Mo Yuxin raised an eyebrow.
"Homeward City?"
"Yes."
"Is that its real name?"
Luo Tianhe hesitated.
"It has had many names over the years. Homeward City is the name used now."
Su Yubing glanced at the city walls.
"Why did everyone call us Ancestors?"
The old man’s expression became complicated.
"Because this city was built by you."
Silence.
Mo Yuxin looked at Su Yubing.
Su Yubing looked back at her.
There was a brief moment in which both women came to exactly the same conclusion.
This was either an extremely elaborate joke or something far beyond the normal rules of the cultivation world.
Mo Yuxin turned back to Luo Tianhe.
"We have never been here."
"In this life, no."
The old man’s words made the air become quiet.
Su Yubing narrowed her eyes.
"What do you mean by that?"
Luo Tianhe looked toward the city.
"Please come inside. There is much you need to see."
Mo Yuxin did not answer immediately.
She quietly released part of her spiritual sense.
It spread through the city.
The city was huge.
Much larger than any ordinary cultivation city they had visited on the Southern Continent.
The walls alone were several hundred kilometers long.
Within them were mountain peaks, rivers, lakes, countless streets, huge markets, sect residences, floating platforms and what looked like entire neighborhoods built for cultivators of different levels.
At the very center stood a massive black tower.
Mo Yuxin’s spiritual sense stopped at the tower.
Something inside it looked back.
Her eyes narrowed.
The feeling lasted less than a heartbeat.
Then it disappeared.
Su Yubing noticed the change in her expression.
"Something?"
"The black tower."
Su Yubing looked toward it.
"Dangerous?"
"Unknown."
Su Yubing thought about it.
"Then we won’t go there unless we have to."
Mo Yuxin smiled.
"That’s why I married you."
Su Yubing gave her a look.
"You married me because I am beautiful."
"That too."
"Only that?"
Mo Yuxin stepped closer and quietly tucked a loose strand of hair behind Su Yubing’s ear.
