Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 69 Two Valid Anchors
Seamline pulled Tarek off his feet when the hidden foundation opened beneath the west stands.
The floor split along his chalk mark, revealing a service chamber sliding east under the registered building.
'Two foundations sit beneath one arena, while the lower one just started stealing the upper,' Ossian caught Tarek's coat, 'keep the chain out of his throat.'
Living silk ran from Seamline into the opening, where a Loomback Spider dragged itself across a wall that moved with it.
The creature stood wider than the service chamber, forcing its jointed legs through concrete before converting each broken edge into pale thread.
Every strand joined the second foundation, pulling the arena west one measured piece at a time.
Calista ordered the south tunnel sealed while Bastien moved all twelve trainees beyond the arena boundary.
Seyra remained at the seated map station under ankle restriction, marking each floor shift instead of entering the fight.
Maelle drove her hammer through Tarek's loose chain, pinning it before the next pull took his shoulder into the gap.
"One anchor is attached to a monster," Tarek said, cutting Seamline free from her hammer, "that does not make it valid."
The spider struck the chamber wall with two front legs, turning a concrete section into woven strands around Maelle's feet.
Ossian pulled her back as the floor softened beneath both of them, while Hollow Raven filled his sight with routes that no longer matched.
The remembered service chamber had occupied four positions before the arena was condemned.
Its first position placed the west wall above solid foundation, while the second carried maintenance pipes beneath the centre ring.
The current room entered a third position absent from every old route, then returned to the first after eight seconds.
'Raven remembers the cycle before the spider changed it,' Ossian watched the chamber start another slide, 'use the return, not the map.'
[A rival nest-builder is relocating an available lair]
[Territorial loss will reduce Court shelter capacity]
'The system worries about shelter after calling the spider a rival landlord,' Ossian accepted lair without correcting it, 'Fracture first, joke later.'
Calista crossed the opening when the chamber returned, placing her spear between one leg joint and the wall.
Glass Mantis found the shortest cut, but the spider changed the concrete around her spear into thread.
Her thrust passed through the collapsing surface without leverage, leaving the hooked leg free to strike her ribs.
Ossian used Raven's remembered step to reach her before the chamber slid, taking the blow across Dreadweight's empty right plate.
The impact drove both of them against the registered foundation while the gauntlet kept its fingers closed.
'Empty right hand protected us, but Raven cannot hold the next hit,' Ossian counted the chamber return, 'ten seconds for Ironback.'
He began the full transfer while Calista guarded his body through the first four exposed seconds.
The spider pulled three wall sections into silk, widening the chamber before Tarek could choose another surface.
At six seconds, one rear leg swept toward Ossian while his body remained between masks.
Tarek drove a needle anchor through the leg's outer plate, then let the attached chain redirect its path into the floor.
The anchor held for one strike without stopping the creature, buying Calista enough time to catch its next joint.
Ironback settled over Ossian at ten seconds, widening his shoulders as the chamber reached its first remembered position.
Dominance urged him to seize Tarek from the danger line, treating the unawakened contractor as loose equipment.
'Tarek knows the load better than I do,' Ossian opened both hands instead, 'ask for the line.'
"I can hold whatever you make valid," Tarek said, recovering the chain from beneath the hooked leg.
Maelle struck the living silk with her cold hammer face and found each strand carried the west wall's full weight.
Burning through it would drop the stands before the spider lost its connection to the hidden foundation.
Calista marked the creature's rear plate, where three silk channels entered armour before leaving through separate legs.
The Loomback turned toward her spear, placing all three channels beyond Ossian's reach.
Seyra called one movement from the map station through Odelia's floor taps, identifying the chamber's next westward shift.
Her route changed no fighter's command, but it showed where the spider had to place its rear body during the return.
'One predictable position, two anchors, plus a wall turning into rope,' Ossian braced against the registered foundation, 'make the monster one surface.'
He caught the hooked front leg when the chamber returned to its first position.
Ironback stored the pull through his body while both feet sank into thread replacing the floor.
Odelia sent one sharp pulse through the remaining concrete, giving Tarek the instant before that surface changed.
Tarek drove his first needle into the registered foundation outside the spider's silk reach.
The second anchor remained embedded in the creature's rear plate, but three moving legs kept changing its angle.
"Both points hold now," Tarek said, drawing Seamline across the Loomback's body, "do not let it turn."
Ossian pulled the front leg toward himself instead of resisting the spider's next step.
The creature committed its remaining weight west, tightening Seamline from its rear plate to the original foundation.
Silver segments cut across the three silk channels Calista had marked, forcing the load back through the monster's abdomen.
Its wall-threading ability reached for the registered foundation, but Tarek's first anchor sat beyond the converted edge.
The Loomback could soften every surface it touched without changing the distant point holding its own body.
'That is Tarek's line, and the spider built the force inside it,' Ossian released Ironback's stored pull, 'open the rear plate.'
He spent the captured load through the creature's front leg, twisting its body against Seamline.
The rear armour split where the second anchor entered, exposing a pale core beneath stretched silk channels.
Calista pinned one free limb before it could cover the opening, keeping her spear inside armour instead of the changing wall.
Maelle struck her hammer against the floor, marking when Ossian could heat Dreadweight's loaded left plate through Furnace.
Ossian drove the hot left gauntlet through the exposed rear plate while his empty right hand held the chain away from Tarek.
The Loomback pulled once more toward the second foundation, using its last movement to deepen the strike into its own core.
Its eight legs stopped converting concrete, leaving half-formed strands hanging from the chamber walls.
Seamline remained tight until Tarek checked both anchor points and ordered Ossian to release the body.

The new face settled behind Ossian's ribs with an urge to close every gap before learning why it existed.
'I own six faces for three body places, while the newest mask already hates cracks,' Ossian removed Ironback, 'do not wear Loomback inside this building.'
The spider's death released the west wall, but the hidden chamber began sliding away beneath them.
Tarek pulled his second anchor from the corpse and searched for another surface before the opening narrowed.
The registered foundation remained valid, while the hidden foundation passed beneath it for less than eight seconds.
He kicked the freed needle into the second structure, stitching both foundations together through Seamline without claiming either one.
The chain stopped the chamber with enough space for Maelle to enter beneath the west stands.
Calista held the opening while Ossian kept his empty gauntlets beneath the upper floor, ready for another shift.
Maelle followed the spider's load-bearing silk to a black frame buried inside the hidden foundation.
Its jointed bars surrounded an empty central space shaped for something larger than a support column.
No rust marked the buried material, yet each bar carried pale sockets matching the architecture inside Dreadweight's palms.
"This frame was waiting before the spider found it," Maelle said, placing her cold hammer against one dormant joint.
The joint opened one finger's width and drew heat from the relic without waking the rest.
Tarek warned that his two anchors had six seconds before the moving foundations tore Seamline between them.
Maelle recorded the frame's first socket, then cleared the chamber before he released the hidden point.
The service room slid away while the black structure remained connected to both foundations through cut living silk.
A system screen opened over the closing gap as Ossian carried Maelle back onto the registered floor.
