Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 70 The Building Nobody Wanted

  • Next Chapter

The claim directive held its screen after the moving foundation sealed itself beneath the west stands.

[Claim directive: Stitch the frame into your territory]

Loomback pressed behind Ossian's ribs, urging him to close the buried gap and own the building before any person counted its cost.

'The mask wants this place stitched shut by morning,' Ossian stepped back from the sealed hatch, 'the owner asked one credit and I still cannot tell Paloma why one credit is the wrong price.'

Paloma had the arena's safety file open on the depot table when they returned, with the one-credit offer clipped to its cover and a red line struck through the printed figure.

"One credit to the owner, plus 121,999 in municipal safety debt that becomes yours the second you sign," she turned the file to face his hands, "you are not buying a headquarters, you are taking on the funeral costs of a building that tried to walk off its own foundation."

Ossian held the survey page down with his thumb, where Tarek's chalk lines marked a second foundation that no city diagram had ever recorded.

"I want a structure people can leave without losing their treatment," he kept his voice level against her red line, "the depot has one shutter, twelve trainees sleep in a loading bay, and the district office routed its own workers through our corridor an hour ago."

Paloma tapped the safety-debt figure twice with the back of her pen before she answered.

"The district used your corridor because their beam failed in eighteen minutes, not because this guild is legitimate," she pulled the file back across the table, "buy this wreck and every buried secret inside its walls becomes a liability we pay for out of 177,600 spendable credits."

'That is 122,000 of debt against 177,600 spendable, leaving 55,600 free with the 32,400 training reserve untouched,' Ossian ran the number before she finished speaking, 'the guild I built six weeks ago can buy a headquarters or keep twelve trainees, not both.'

He turned the survey page toward her, letting the two foundations sit where Tarek had drawn them.

"The city certified one foundation on this building and sold it with a second one pulling the walls west, plus living silk no survey recorded," he held her stare, "that nondisclosure is worth more than 121,999 to whoever ends up holding the rot."

[A concealed lair defect raises claim value when territory is taken without contest]

[Hostile survey omission detected]

'The system calls the city's fraud a feature that lifts the lair's value,' Ossian watched Paloma reach the same conclusion with a contract pen, 'the joke is that the system is not wrong.'

Paloma spent forty minutes converting the undisclosed foundation into an indemnity clause instead of a discount.

"The guild assumes the 121,999 safety debt plus one credit to the owner, while the city keeps liability for every defect its survey never recorded," she initialed the clause, "including whatever Maelle pulled out from under the west stands."

"That indemnity leaves the buried level with the building," Maelle said from the workshop door with a cold hammer resting on her shoulder, "the city cannot excavate what it never disclosed without admitting the survey was built to lie."

Loomback screamed at the delay while Ossian signed beneath both clauses, the mask wanting the territory claimed in one act that the slow signature refused.

[Loomback Spider synchronisation: 17%]

[A primary lair has been claimed through formal tribute]

[Court shelter capacity increased]

[Available tribute: 88,000]

'Primary lair is the system's name for a building I just bought with debt, and tribute is its name for the money I no longer have,' Ossian set the pen down, 'Paloma is already billing me for the ink.'

Loomback dragged his attention to every crack in the new concourse before his own eyes found them, pulling his gaze toward settling plaster and a seam in the north wall that the mask wanted sealed at once.

Bastien walked the same corridor with a chalk tally, marking seven gaps as monitoring points instead of defects.

"You watch a crack for a week before you fill it, because half of them are carrying load the wall still needs," Bastien did not look up from the tally, "a porter who seals every gap on the first walk-through is the one who brings the ceiling down."

'Loomback wants the gap closed before I learn what it carries,' Ossian pulled his stare off the north seam, 'Bastien just handed me the mastery trial in chalk.'

Tarek arrived with his one-day contractor stamp still on his vest and ran Seamline from the registered foundation to the sealed hatch without speaking.

"The buried level sits inside the indemnity clause now, which means the city cannot order it opened without reopening its own survey fraud," he coiled the chain around his wrist, "your engineer found a frame the municipal record says does not exist, and the contract says that is now your problem."

Twelve trainees carried the depot's salvaged kit through the south tunnel under Bastien's count, while Seyra mapped the new training floor from a chair with her braced ankle raised above the danger line.

Odelia ran a single low hum through the arena's old speaker ducts, finding four dead channels and one that carried her voice to every room at once.

[Court assets have entered the primary lair]

[Dependent creatures relocated to shelter: 12]

'The system calls twelve paying trainees dependent creatures seeking my shelter,' Ossian watched the south tunnel swallow the last crate, 'before winter it will call the heating bill a feeding tax.'

Calista found him on the west concourse after the move, where Paloma's floor plan spread over a survey table beside the sealed foundation hatch.

Ossian had written her name beside his on the two command rooms before the plan was printed, giving the field-command line and the route-command line one owner each.

"You gave me half the building before asking whether I wanted a room here," Calista flattened the plan with her spear hand, "command space on a floor plan is not the same as a decision."

The rehearsed answer died before it reached his mouth, every version of it stiff with contract language.

"I meant the kiss in medical," he said, and the words landed smaller than the plan deserved, "I put your name on the room because you are the only person here who can pull me off a route, not because of what happened between us."

She held the plan flat against the table for one long breath before she spoke.

"Then the command stays earned and the rest stays separate until one of us earns the right to mix them," Calista folded the plan in half so both command rooms touched, "I am not moving into a room you handed me to settle what a kiss made complicated."

Bastien put Ossian in the east-concourse room for its clean structural readings, then checked the door himself before leaving for the night.

Ossian woke past midnight to a corridor light falling across his bed at the wrong angle.

Every door on the concourse now faced his room, turned along grooves the original builders had never cut, with their locks pointed inward at the place where he slept.

The floor had not moved, yet each frame sat in a fresh channel cut clean through concrete that had cured before the arena was ever sold.

Ossian stood in his doorway in the dark, counting fourteen locks aimed at the bed he had just left.

Each bolt had drawn itself softly into place without a sound, guided by the buried frame beneath the floor.

[A primary lair has oriented its accesses toward the registered host]

[First territorial function: active]

[Identity Fracture: 57%]

'The building knows where I sleep, and I am standing here counting its doors instead of leaving,' Ossian kept his hand off Dreadweight at his side, 'a month ago I would have been out of the corridor before the count reached five.'
