Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 68 The Tailor at the Ruin
The load-bearing west wall moved another four millimetres while Paloma held the arena purchase offer above its widening foundation gap.
'One credit buys a headquarters if we ignore the wall leaving first,' Ossian watched Maelle set her hammer beside the crack, 'legitimacy may require a building that stays in one place.'
Buying the arena would make The Unmasked responsible for every hidden defect, including movement no city diagram admitted existed.
[A damaged lair is available for territorial claim]
[Weak ownership may be replaced for one unit of tribute]
Ossian read one unit of tribute as a bargain before noticing the system had ignored the attached debt.
'The lair price sounds cheap when the system leaves out structural death,' he closed the screen, 'inspect before wanting it harder.'
Maelle drove two temporary plates across the foundation gap and heated their inner edges with her awakened hammer.
Her first load test held while the gap widened from fourteen millimetres to seventeen.
"The wall is moving west while the floor drops north," Maelle said, lowering the hammer before another strike fed the fold.
Bastien cleared the west stands, then sent the inspection images to every structural contractor who still answered his old porter number.
One reply rejected both visible surfaces as the same moving object, then requested access through the south tunnel.
The man entering five minutes later wore a fitted grey work vest with chalk held inside stitched wrist loops.
His formal work card named Tarek Saavedra once, followed by an emergency structural-seam certification built on his suit and restraint work.
Tarek carried a segmented measuring chain around his waist, with one broad needle anchor locked against each hip.
He stopped outside Maelle's repair line and studied the fold before looking at anybody's face.
"Heat joined the brace to two surfaces that disagree about direction," he said, placing chalk against the lower plate.
"The city plan calls both surfaces fixed," she replied, pointing at the stamped foundation mark near his foot.
Tarek measured the mark against the wall rather than accepting the document, finding a three-degree change across its scratched edge.
"Then the city plan is dressed better than the building," he said, unhooking the first needle anchor.
'He insulted the survey through tailoring while Maelle holds a hot hammer,' Ossian moved beyond the chain's return path, 'give them room.'
The temporary plate tore before Tarek finished extending Seamline, sending one heated corner toward Maelle's unguarded leg.
He kicked the first anchor through a sound column beside her, then pulled the segmented chain across the failing brace.
Its second needle needed another valid surface, yet every point near the foundation gap shifted under his measuring tension.
Tarek rejected the closest support, crossed behind Ossian, plus drove the remaining anchor into the arena's central access beam.
Seamline tightened between both points and caught the metal corner before it reached Maelle.
The returning load cut through Tarek's vest sleeve, leaving a red line where his own chain struck his upper arm.
He kept both hands off the moving segments until the foundation gap stopped at twenty-three millimetres.
'Two anchors held the wall without magic, while his chain charged him for choosing the distant one,' Ossian checked the cut, 'ordinary skill first.'
Maelle cooled her failed plates before approaching the line Tarek had established.
She tested the access beam, then admitted his distant anchor carried force her brace had trapped inside the wall.
"Your seam buys twenty minutes before that beam starts twisting," she said, wrapping his cut without praising the blood.
Tarek corrected her estimate to eighteen, then asked whether the arena still contained apprentices near the west storage rooms.
Bastien showed the cleared count, proving all twelve trainees remained beyond the south tunnel with Seyra under ankle restriction.
An alarm from the neighbouring district office interrupted the inspection when its lower evacuation ramp shifted shut against the arena wall.
District control ordered them to wait for a municipal brace team with a thirty-eight-minute arrival estimate.
Tarek looked at his chain, where the access beam had begun turning four minutes earlier than either estimate allowed.
"This seam fails before their team arrives," he said, marking the twist with one chalk line.
Calista opened the arena's south tunnel while Bastien moved the trainees into its cleared storage recesses.
Odelia used low floor taps to guide the trapped office workers toward the wall adjoining The Unmasked's staging route.
The district supervisor objected until Paloma placed the authority's earlier licence refusal beside the current emergency order.
That refusal had called the arena route unsuitable for guild-controlled public movement during The Unmasked's first application.
"Use another route if your finding remains accurate," Paloma said, holding both documents under his body camera.
The supervisor read the moving-beam estimate and amended the order without looking toward the camera.
Its new text directed evacuation through the Unmasked-controlled staging domain under Calista's field command.
'They refused our legitimacy until their own door stopped opening,' Ossian watched the first worker cross, 'make the route safe before enjoying the paper.'
Calista held the narrow junction while Seyra directed movement from a seated map station beyond the ankle-danger line.
Odelia separated the workers into pairs through distinct floor pulses, preventing the damaged ramp from taking one combined load.
Maelle supported Tarek's central anchor with a cooled plate, but waited for his measurement before adding Furnace heat.
Their repair methods disagreed across every step, yet neither changed the other's work without permission.
Tarek released Seamline in three controlled sections, keeping the returning chain away from the public route.
Maelle fused his release plate after the last segment cleared, leaving the wall free to settle without tearing the beam apart.
The district order closed with every office worker safe and no injury added to Bastien's count.
Paloma filed the routing document before the supervisor could replace Unmasked-controlled staging domain with temporary access area.
The public record now showed the authority using the same route it had cited while refusing their earlier licence.
[Dependent territory has accepted evacuation through the host lair]
[Court legitimacy has increased through involuntary recognition]
'Involuntary recognition may be the system's best definition of government paperwork,' Ossian accepted legitimacy before correcting lair, 'that took too long.'
Tarek inspected his cut while Paloma drafted a one-day structural-contractor agreement with The Unmasked holding route authority.
The arena owner accepted Tarek's emergency fee in writing, leaving the guild account unchanged.
His contract covered foundation measurement without tying the work to supernatural power or guild membership.
"I repair structures after people agree which shape they need," Tarek said, signing beneath the limited scope.
Maelle signed as technical witness, then added that disagreement remained permitted inside every measurement review.
Tarek looked at her failed plate before accepting the clause without removing it.
'He proved useful before the system could price his body,' Ossian added his mark, 'keep the next offer out of today.'
The new contractor returned to the west gap with Seamline relaxed between both hands.
He fed one narrow segment beneath Maelle's cooled brace, expecting the chain to touch foundation after nine centimetres.
Seamline continued for another half metre without striking concrete, then stopped against something softer than soil.
Tarek drew it back with a pale strand wrapped around three silver links.
The strand tightened after leaving the gap, pulling toward the buried space instead of sagging under its own weight.
Maelle touched one end with the cold face of her hammer, making the material contract around Seamline like living tissue.
"That silk is carrying load," she said, watching the west wall move against Tarek's fixed chalk marks.
He changed the chain angle and found tension leading away from the foundation shown on every city plan.
Ossian wore Hollow Raven long enough to search the arena's remembered service routes, but none placed structure beneath that direction.
The wall shifted one millimetre toward the buried tension while Seamline traced a second straight edge below the floor.
Tarek marked both foundations on the plan, leaving an empty space between lines that should never have existed together.
Something below them pulled the living silk again, drawing the arena away from its registered foundation toward the second one.
Seamline snapped tight in Tarek's hands as a Loomback Spider began moving beneath the building.
