Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 63 Four Beats
The arena floor shifted six feet east while twelve trainees remained between the centre ring and the south evacuation tunnel.
Two practice markers slid into the new gap, revealing a moving track beneath flooring that had passed inspection that morning.
Bastien stopped the outer machinery through the contract panel, yet the inner mechanism continued under power from an unregistered Gate residue.
Calista's straight route ended against a wall that had not occupied that position during the paid trial.
'A real Site Event started during a training contract,' Ossian counted twelve heads while the floor shifted again, 'insurance will call this educational enrichment... keep trainees behind the blade cords.'
Seyra threw one Orbit Blade around a support post, creating a curved boundary before the next floor section moved.
Her first completed movement changed the trainees' safe position, making white Crane residue flare beneath the path she had taken.
Odelia planted Resonance Spine without using her healing throat, sending a low Chorus rhythm through the floor instead.
The pulse aligned willing breathing rather than controlling movement, giving every trainee the same warning before the arena shifted again.
[A territorial trial has become a live hunt]
[Twelve lesser Court assets remain inside the moving lair]
'Lesser assets, sure.., while I nearly let that wording pass again,' Ossian wore Hollow Raven, 'find the current tunnel, not the remembered one.'
Raven offered nine previous arena layouts, including exits sealed years before the condemned-site order, while One remembered map showed a west service door, but the current wall behind it held fresh concrete without hinges.
Another route ended beneath seating that had collapsed during the original breach, offering speed only to a body willing to abandon trainees.
Ossian rejected eight stored paths, keeping the present south tunnel visible through Odelia's vibration line, while Calista ordered the trainees into two straight columns, but the next moving wall divided both groups at their centre.
Seyra crossed the split through a low turn, moving her second Orbit Blade from forearm to calf as a shield.
The second white mark recorded a useful movement that altered defense plus position, while Calista told Seyra to hold the line and braced her spear against the closing wall.
"Your line moved," Seyra replied, hooking a trainee's harness with the magnetic cord, "mine can follow people."
'They are arguing different problems while the floor keeps choosing,' Ossian pointed Calista toward the hinge before another section moved, 'let each command own a purpose.'
Calista accepted the division without liking it, driving her spear through the hinge to delay the wall for eleven seconds.
Seyra's third movement ran along the opening, pulling two trainees through while her cord remained clear of their throats.
Odelia changed Chorus timing when Seyra's ankle shortened one step, matching the fighter's current body instead of forcing the original count.
The Crane rose from the centre ring through a circle of white plates, its thin legs folding around a body taller than Ossian.
Four jointed wings copied the angles of Seyra's blades, while its head turned toward every face watching from the upper platform.
The monster wanted witnesses before attacking, measuring which movement drew their eyes, while its white plates brightened under each watching face until Odelia raised the evacuation cards.
Calista used that change as evidence, assigning each trainee one physical route task that kept eyes away from the monster.
Ossian lowered his gaze to the Crane's feet while the upper platform turned away, 'Looking elsewhere protects the trainees... provoking the monster may bring its first strike.'
The Crane repeated Seyra's opening roll beneath the barrier, crossing the arena without touching the moving wall.
Its copied step came faster than hers, placing one cutting wing beside the trainee she had rescued first.
Seyra made her fourth distinct movement by throwing both blades across different heights, one defending the trainee while the other changed her attack angle.
Four white marks lit around her feet, increasing acceleration enough for her to reach the monster before its wing closed.
Odelia's Chorus steadied the movement count through the floor, but left every choice of direction with Seyra.
Calista saw the Crane follow attention and ordered the trainees to watch the south tunnel instead of the fight.
'Four Beats increase speed when every move does real work... no decorative steps, no repeated entry,' Ossian watched Seyra's ankle bend, 'prepare a catch.'
The Crane copied her second movement, shifting one wing to its leg before kicking the wooden support apart, while Seyra's magnetic cord returned along a broken path and struck her damaged ankle.
Her Rhythm Chain reset when pain forced her to repeat the same recovery step she had used near the barrier.
Seyra named the reset herself, preventing the watching trainees from mistaking lost power for hidden control.
She asked Odelia for a reduced count before attempting anything new, choosing useful timing over false recovery, while the four white marks vanished, leaving her with less speed while the monster retained every copied movement.
Ossian changed to Ironback body form through ten exposed seconds, trusting Calista to hold the wing line during his pause.
She took one shallow cut across the shoulder but kept the Crane away from Seyra until his wider body settled.
'A ten-second switch still costs somebody else blood, while extra power does nothing to shorten the vulnerable part,' Ossian caught a wing, 'spend strength on space.'
Ironback wanted him to drag Seyra behind his body, treating her as a weak asset that had failed command.
He lifted the broken post instead, restoring a return point for her Orbit Blade without deciding her next movement.
Seyra used a new rising step around the post, beginning a second chain while Odelia changed Chorus to match.
The first Beat drew the monster away from two trainees crossing the south tunnel.
Her second placed an Orbit Blade beneath a falling floor panel, holding it long enough for another trainee to crawl free.
The third changed her attack line under the Crane's copied wing, cutting one white joint without repeating the earlier roll.
Calista delayed her own thrust, waiting until Seyra's fourth Beat forced the monster across the spear line she had chosen.
Inside his head, 'Calista holds one perfect route while Seyra bends the enemy into it... good, neither method has to become the other,' he released the post, 'move the last four.'
All twelve trainees reached the south tunnel, though the arena sealed its outer gate before Bastien could pull them beyond the Site boundary.
The bars left four inches between each rail, enough for medical supplies but too narrow for an adult shoulder.
Odelia counted injuries through written cards: Calista's shoulder cut, Seyra's ankle strain, plus two trainees with minor bruising.
The Crane watched the survivors through the tunnel bars, learning which four movements had produced the strongest rescue response.
Its plates changed position in the exact sequence Seyra had completed, compressing four Beats into less than one second.
Odelia marked the copied order on four cards, giving Calista a physical record she could use without relying on spoken timing.
Bastien reached the sealed outer gate with a manual spreader, but the lock required twelve seconds without another arena shift.
Seyra showed every trainee which movement the Crane had stolen, removing surprise before the monster could turn recognition into panic.
Ossian kept Ironback between the copied sequence and the tunnel bars, refusing its urge to make frightened trainees kneel for easier protection.
Seyra raised both Orbit Blades while her damaged ankle shook against the floor, refusing to hide the weakness from her team.
The Clockstep Crane copied her first four useful movements and performed them faster than any prepared fighter could answer there.
Its compressed sequence struck the tunnel bars in four places before one human body could react, bending the centre rail toward the trapped trainees while Bastien's spreader remained outside.
Calista planted her spear beneath the bending rail as the second sequence began.
