Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 62 Seyra Refuses to Stand Still

  • Next Chapter

Seyra stepped out of the strength-test square whenever Bastien called the starting count, invalidating three attempts without dropping either Orbit Blade.

Calista marked the fourth refusal on her clipboard while eleven trainees watched from behind the depot safety line.

'She completed yesterday's course faster than everyone, yet four taped corners stop her before the count begins,' Ossian checked her feet, 'ask what the square removes.'

Seyra slid one blade from her forearm to her calf, using its locked edge as a guard while circling the test weight.

The flat ring left both hands free for a harness pull, while the calf position turned her next step into protection rather than ornament.

Calista tested the exposed side with her spear, forcing Seyra to move the blade again before any point entered the score.

"Repeated drills reward people whose strongest movement looks identical every time," she said, changing direction before Calista could close the lane.

"A standard test proves whether your body follows a standard instruction," Calista replied, keeping the clipboard against her wrapped palm.

Seyra touched the first weight, defended against Calista's practice spear, plus crossed behind Ossian without repeating one foot placement.

Every motion changed her position, attack angle, or available exit even before supernatural power entered the trial.

Her vanity showed when she corrected a trainee's turn mid-argument, but the correction kept his knee away from a broken floor seam.

'Not decoration... every step buys space, which makes Calista's irritation partly wrong,' Ossian moved the square tape, 'test purpose instead of posture.'

He offered one paid evacuation-course trial through a condemned arena, where changing routes would matter more than lifting the same weight.

Paloma stated the fee at 1,200 credits plus injury coverage, refusing to make future employment part of the offer.

The agreement paid six hundred before entry with another six hundred after the final safety count, even if the course showed Seyra unsuitable for guild work.

Seyra added a replacement-cost ceiling for both Orbit Blades, preventing one broken weapon from becoming permanent debt to The Unmasked.

Beside them, seyra read the image-rights clause first, then struck out any guild ownership of footage showing her Orbit Blade technique.

"My old team sold a rescue with somebody else's face over it," she said, pressing the amended line flat.

"movement credit stays mine," while The system measured her request before Ossian had considered offering a mask.

'The system turned one good interview into a binding route before lunch,' Ossian closed it while Seyra checked the payment clause, 'paid work first... keep Crane out of the contract.'

Seyra noticed his pause and accused him of planning an impressive reveal instead of answering the clause.

Ossian admitted he had a dangerous power match in mind, then stated that no result would alter today's pay.

Calista added the known instinct risk from the Crane file, including its pressure to perform while observed.

"I asked for a work test," Seyra said, fastening both blades around her forearms, "save the life sentence for after I earn lunch."

Her response made three trainees laugh, though Bastien ended it by checking whether lunch had entered the course supply list at all.

The arena contract offered territory access instead of credits, granting six months of Gate staging rights if the evacuation test succeeded.

That access included storage near three entrances, priority booking for two windows each week, plus liability for every damaged staging room.

Bastien priced the storage before Paloma valued the routes, calculating how many transport hours the closer equipment position removed.

Paloma valued that access above 40,000 credits while warning that it could not cover next week's payroll by itself.

'Territory worth more than cash while the account pays sandwiches... real craftsmanship from the market,' Ossian signed the work order, 'bring food.'

At the condemned arena, twelve trainees entered through the north gate while Calista controlled a straight evacuation line toward the south tunnel.

Seyra began at centre floor with five weighted rescue markers placed between collapsed seating sections, her first movement rolled beneath a hanging barrier, shifting one marker away from the fall zone without losing either blade.

Beside them, seyra called the movement a floor change, then made the watching trainees explain which danger had moved in physical terms.

One identified the falling barrier, while another noticed her new position had also opened a clean line toward the second marker.

The second turned a returning magnetic cord around a post, creating a handrail for two trainees crossing loose steps.

Calista called the path wasteful until Seyra's third change blocked a practice projectile from the upper platform.

'The first three movements changed real risks... she isn't avoiding instruction, she is refusing a test that deletes her method,' Ossian followed the cord, 'record function.'

Odelia timed the course through written cards while her throat remained under medical silence, while Each card named what Seyra's movement changed, preventing visual flair from receiving credit without a rescue result.

The fifth turn placed Seyra behind the final marker, where she used both Orbit Blades as a sled under its base.

Her damaged right ankle faltered after the lift, revealing an old brace hidden beneath the calf lock.

Calista saw the weakness and shortened the route, but Seyra rejected help until one trainee began copying her unsafe landing.

She stopped, corrected the trainee, plus accepted Calista's shoulder for three steps without treating support as defeat.

Inside his head, 'She hates becoming irrelevant more than she hates pain, and Crane will feed that fear through an audience,' he marked the brace, 'disclose it before any offer.'

The five rescue markers reached the south tunnel in eleven minutes, beating the standard route by two while preserving every safety check.

Seyra's former team arrived before the course ended, carrying a contract they had failed twice inside the same arena.

Their manager asked for her movement planning by name but offered half the fee listed for their sponsored hunter.

Seyra placed her paid trial sheet beside their offer and increased her price to 2,400 with full technique ownership.

"You need the route I built, so the name stays where viewers can read it," she said, leaving the pen on their copy.

The manager accepted after Paloma confirmed The Unmasked would preserve the negotiation record without claiming representation.

'A public reversal that pays Seyra instead of making us heroes... good, legitimacy can belong to somebody else,' Ossian signed only as site witness, 'keep her terms.'

Calista removed the failed square-test marks from Seyra's file, replacing them with a functional movement assessment and ankle restriction, while the paid trial ended without membership or a compatibility promise.

Seyra signed the completion count only after all five markers reached storage, treating rescued equipment with the same ledger discipline Bastien expected from people.

After lunch, Seyra requested the Crane risk file once everyone else received their own results.

Odelia tapped twice through Resonance Spine, feeling a vibration beneath the condemned arena that did not match any trainee footfall.

White residue traced a four-step pattern under the floor, ending where no human body had landed, while Vaska tested the trace from outside the Site boundary and found monster keratin.

The arena authority denied any registered creature entry, yet its morning inspection contained four missing minutes in the internal movement record.

Seyra compared the pattern with her first course steps and found each mark copied a useful change rather than her decorative transitions.

Ossian cancelled the departure count, preserving all twelve trainees within the cleared south lane while Calista established a guarded perimeter around them, while the Clockstep Crane was already inside the arena, copying Seyra from below.

The contract changed from one paid trial into a live Site Event, placing twelve trainees under Bastien's count while the arena authority locked every outer gate.

Seyra drew both Orbit Blades before the floor shifted beneath her injured ankle.
