Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 64 Eight Beats
The Clockstep Crane repeated Seyra's four-movement rescue chain before Calista could pull her spear free from its damaged wing.
Its first copied roll crossed beneath the tunnel bars, putting the monster among twelve trainees whose outer gate remained sealed.
'Every repeated move becomes the Crane's weapon, while Seyra has to invent on one bad ankle,' Ossian grabbed the broken post between two trainees, 'map the tunnel.'
The south tunnel ran thirty feet toward the sealed gate, with storage recesses on both sides and the Crane blocking the arena end.
Bastien waited beyond the outer bars with one manual spreader, though its jaws needed twelve uninterrupted seconds against the lock.
Three trainees carried bruises from the first arena shift, leaving Calista responsible for a line that could not absorb another collision.
Calista took centre width, giving the trainees space behind her while refusing to chase the monster into Seyra's route.
Odelia planted Resonance Spine against the tunnel wall, using silent floor pulses to mark timing without spending her recovering voice.
Seyra began a new Rhythm Chain by sliding one Orbit Blade along the wall, changing its return path around Calista's spear.
The first Beat placed a moving guard between the Crane and the nearest trainee, while her second movement stepped onto a storage recess, raising her attack angle without repeating the arena jump the monster knew.
[A performing creature is building a useful hunt sequence]
[Four distinct movements will improve pursuit speed]
Inside his head, 'The system praises performance while the instinct turns witnesses into a trap,' he braced the post without watching Seyra's face, 'watch her injury... keep the return cord clear.'
The Crane copied her old kick against the wall, but Calista had left no body on that expected line.
Her spear met its chest when the copied movement ended, proving a known sequence could become a weakness once the team waited for it.
Seyra crossed behind Calista through a low side step, earning a third Beat while changing the attack relationship.
The fourth movement detached her second Orbit Blade toward the ceiling, where its magnetic cord caught a loose lighting frame.
Acceleration entered her body at four Beats, sharpening every turn enough to expose how much the ankle lagged.
Odelia changed the floor pulse by one count, giving Seyra room to shorten the injured landing without resetting her sequence.
'Chorus supports timing but doesn't order her feet... good, Odelia keeps choice inside coordination,' Ossian saw the Crane lower its wings, 'prepare for the copied throw.'
The monster launched one plate along Seyra's first blade path, expecting the tunnel wall to guide it around Calista.
Ossian lifted the broken post into that path, letting the plate cut wood instead of the trainee behind him.
His shoulders took the remaining force without an active Ironback body, sending pain through the rib injury he had promised not to hide.
Calista noticed the flinch but kept her spear line, trusting the later argument to survive the current attack.
Seyra's fifth movement used the hanging lighting frame as a pivot, carrying her above the copied plate without repeating an aerial turn.
Her sixth wrapped both magnetic cords around separate wing joints, changing defense into restraint as the Crane tried following her rise.
The monster pulled downward, forcing her damaged ankle against the wall while every trainee watched the contest.
Her brace clicked under the strain, and the medical strip changed from green to amber along the outer joint.
Seyra looked toward the watching faces before she checked the warning, proving the Crane's pressure had found her existing fear.
Clockstep instinct entered through the residue before she owned any mask, making retreat feel humiliating under twelve pairs of eyes.
'She wants to keep the pose until the ankle tears, and audience pressure found her before any binding,' Ossian stepped into view, 'give retreat a job.'
He ordered three trainees to follow Seyra's next withdrawal rather than stare at the fight, turning retreat into route leadership.
She released one cord and dropped toward the left recess, using the seventh movement to open a path for those trainees.
The choice preserved her ankle brace, though the Crane copied her earlier landing and reached the recess before her.
Odelia struck Resonance Spine twice against the wall, warning Seyra that the monster occupied her intended position.
Seyra changed the eighth movement in mid-fall, kicking one Orbit Blade off Calista's spear shaft toward the Crane's feet.
Eight white marks opened around her, leaving a delayed echo to complete the discarded landing after her real body turned away.
The echo drove the Crane out of the recess, straight across Calista's waiting spear line.
'Eight Beats create one delayed movement echo... no copy can know which body finishes first,' Ossian wore Ironback through the protected pause, 'close the arena end.'
Calista pierced the injured wing joint, then used Seyra's magnetic cord to pull the monster toward Ossian's wider body.
Ironback stored the Crane's collision in muscle rather than Dreadweight, since the current gauntlets remained empty receiving plates, while Dominance urged him to pin Seyra with the enemy, removing two moving problems with one grip.
Ossian released her cord instead, allowing Seyra to choose another exit while he held only the monster.
The Crane changed its plates into her eight-movement order, preparing to compress every useful action against the trapped trainees.
Maelle arrived above the tunnel through a maintenance hatch, carrying a cold charge built to break the sealed outer gate.
Her hammer struck the lock once, opening enough clearance for Bastien to pull the first four trainees outside.
'A rescue course earned real territory by becoming a real monster contract... apparently the paperwork predicted danger better than us,' Ossian tightened both arms, 'finish before it learns eight.'
Seyra built one final movement from the open gate, sending both Orbit Blades along opposite cords around the Crane's neck plates.
The motion changed its relationship to every fighter, forcing its copied sequence toward Calista instead of the trainees.
Calista lowered her spear after the monster committed, opening a path that ended at Ossian's stored Ironback force.
He drove the Crane into the tunnel floor, spending the collision through its exposed chest seam while Seyra pulled both cords clear, revealing a narrow mask shaped from the creature's folded face.
Ossian waited until Vaska confirmed no living residue remained inside the plates before touching the new face, maelle sealed two broken joints for later study, keeping evidence separate from the mask that entered his inventory.
[Clockstep Crane has been defeated]
[Clockstep Crane has entered the host inventory]
[Owned faces: 6]
The new face entered Ossian at 9% synchronisation, filling his legs with an urge to repeat every movement that had earned attention.
'Six faces again while the body still prepares three,' Ossian kept the new mask unequipped as the medical count began, 'inventory grows faster than safe use.'
All twelve trainees cleared the gate, while Seyra's ankle required a brace replacement without new structural damage.
The arena authority granted six months of staging access under the completed contract, valued at 40,000 credits without entering the account.
Beside them, the access covered three nearby Gate entrances, one equipment room, plus priority booking that could produce repeated contracts instead of one payment.
Bastien recorded the territory beside its repair liability, preventing the new asset from entering the ledger without the broken tunnel attached.
Seyra received named credit for the rescue route before any guild filing, compatibility test, or permanent power offer entered her record.
Beside them, seyra checked the rescue footage ownership before allowing medical staff to cut away her old brace.
Her former manager had funded the opposition team that delayed the outer-gate release, with payment routed from Solenne's remaining archive accounts.
The Crane mask opened against Ossian's chest, demanding sixteen useful movements from a fighter who used the same short entries in every close fight.
Accepting that demand would expose every efficient habit he had treated as proof that porter training prepared him for anything, while Seyra offered to teach him before the medical staff finished replacing her brace.
