Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 59 Odelia Chooses Her Last Voice
The transport wheels kept turning inside Dead Air, carrying five prisoners toward a ramp whose lower supports had been cut.
Odelia struck Resonance Spine against the floor outside Veyra's field, but no vibration crossed the line between audible space and silence.
'Five people see the wrong exit while nobody can warn them,' Ossian ran toward the rear door before the ramp dropped, 'get a body across... use signs.'
Calista caught his coat before he entered, pointing at four black spikes visible through the vehicle windows, three more sat beneath the chassis, completing a closed field that stored every wheel impact as future force.
Veyra stood on the transport roof with both hands open, giving the prisoners a safe-route sign toward the trapped ramp.
She did not lie with speech, though her hands sent them toward a collapse Solenne had prepared.
Odelia wrote LET ME CHOOSE AFTER RISK on Ossian's forearm with a grease pencil, pressing each letter into skin while the vehicle rolled past them.
Her throat specialist had listed permanent silence first, loss of pitch second, plus altered tissue growth third, while Cathedral offered power that might rebuild her throat into something no surgeon could remove without killing her.
'Ten seconds will change Odelia's body for life, while the transport reaches the cut ramp in forty-two,' Ossian checked the wheel marks, 'give her every failure anyway.'
He placed Cathedral against her palm while writing all nine registry failures across the back of a route card.
Odelia read rejection, partial merger, instinct dominance, tissue conflict, skill loss, memory damage, sensory change, fracture transfer, plus death.
She crossed out skill loss, then wrote that her damaged voice had never belonged to an employer in the first place.
Calista showed the medical page beside it, keeping the worst throat projection visible even as the transport reached thirty-five seconds.
Vaska marked the three buried spikes with Orchid scent, using green powder that remained visible after sound vanished.
"The choice remains yours if every answer costs somebody," Ossian said, making sure Odelia could hear him before she crossed the boundary.
Odelia wrote four conditions down his arm in letters that reached from wrist to elbow: NO COMMAND THROUGH VOICE, STOP ME AFTER BLOOD, MY SILENCE REMAINS AN ANSWER, plus NO PERFORMANCE CONTRACTS.
Ione witnessed every condition through a body recorder, while Calista copied them onto the medical page for enforcement after the emergency.
Vaska added her name beneath the blood limit, agreeing to remove Odelia from danger if Ossian became unable to act.
Nobody treated the written conditions as decoration around a brave decision, since each one assigned authority that could stop Odelia later.
'She wrote rules while five lives count down... not obedience, not gratitude, a contract on my damn arm,' Ossian held Cathedral flat, 'answer cleanly.'
"Accepted," he said, while Odelia touched the mask and named what she wanted the power for.
"I want every trapped person to receive a route they can choose," she said, using her natural voice one final time before the transfer began.
Cathedral softened against her fingers, spreading silver-black material over her throat rather than covering her whole face.
The first second stopped her damaged vocal cords from shaking, while the second pulled stored pain into the mask's ridged neck.
At four seconds, Odelia's knees bent and Ossian supported her elbow without closing his grip.
The Cicada instinct called into the silence through his system, demanding an answer from its future host before surrendering ownership.
[A compatible caller has named her hunt]
[Compatibility: 89%]
[Permanent transfer will consume one owned face]
Inside his head, 'The system calls rescue a hunt now, and I read three lines before noticing,' he felt Cathedral pull away, 'keep counting.'
At six seconds, the mask rebuilt the scar tissue around Odelia's throat into dark flexible rings.
The specialist's monitor lost her natural pitch reading, then found a lower vibration running through tissue that had never moved before.
Odelia squeezed Calista's fingers once to confirm awareness, preserving a human signal while the supernatural change crossed her airway.
At eight, her mouth opened without sound while every nearby loose bolt turned toward her body.
The transport remained twenty-one seconds from the ramp when Cathedral left Ossian's inventory for good.
[Cathedral Cicada has chosen a permanent bearer]
[Owned faces: 5]
[Permanent awakenings: 4]
[Identity Fracture: 51%]
Beside them, the loss opened a cold space in Ossian's mind where every station voice had been filed for use.
'Cathedral is gone but the compartments stayed... no, those calls belonged to people,' Ossian read the names on Odelia's route cards, 'move her now.'
Odelia entered Dead Air carrying Resonance Spine, and every sound disappeared from her steps at the boundary, while Calista pushed the rear door open while Vaska pointed at the green marks beneath the chassis.
Inside, the five prisoners followed Veyra's false route until Odelia planted the staff in the transport floor.
No voice came from her altered throat, yet her eyes widened as stored wheel vibration climbed both prongs.
Dead Air blocked sound from travelling through space, but each black spike remained connected to the floor it was draining.
Odelia touched two fingers to her throat, felt the trapped pressure, plus changed her grip before the instinct could make her call without judgment.
'She can feel every stolen impact inside the spikes... don't decide what that means for her,' Ossian climbed through the door, 'protect the count.'
He held up five fingers, then pointed toward Calista's safe exit at the back of the vehicle.
The first prisoner understood, turning the others away from the ramp while Veyra watched Odelia with recognition rather than surprise.
Veyra touched the ridges around her own altered throat, revealing the same surgical placement beneath a different monster graft.
For one second, neither woman attacked, and Ossian saw an argument about voice carried through scars rather than spoken claims.
Odelia shaped one silent Click through the floor, sending a compact pulse into the nearest marked spike.
The pulse did not break it, but the black shaft flashed with enough stored force to reveal its full depth.
Odelia changed the staff angle instead of repeating the failed Click, proving the new instinct had not reduced her to one louder answer.
Her breath count fell from nine safe forms to six after the test, placing a real limit beside the power before anyone called it mastery.
She marked all seven locations by touching Resonance Spine against the floor in different positions, while Vaska copied each point onto Ossian's arm beneath Odelia's four conditions, replacing guesses with a readable attack map.
The transport reached fourteen seconds from the cut ramp as Calista moved the first two prisoners through the rear door, veyra pressed both palms downward, ordering the spikes to tighten their field around Odelia alone.
'She wants the new voice contained before the prisoners... good, let Veyra spend attention on us,' Ossian changed to Ironback body form, 'carry people without making them obey.'
His shoulders widened inside the vehicle, while the dominance instinct judged the slowest prisoner as a problem to drag.
Ossian offered both forearms instead, waiting until the injured woman chose how to use his strength, while she hooked one arm around him, allowing Calista to guide her feet across the gap.
Odelia remained beside the planted staff with blood beginning beneath one nostril, though no sound had left her mouth.
Her new throat felt every trapped vibration inside Veyra's seven spikes, including enough stolen impact to fold the tunnel around them.
The altered throat did not grant free power, since the first silent Click had reduced her safe Breath count from nine forms to six.
Veyra touched the graft around her own neck, recognizing Cathedral's structure while refusing to release the stolen vibration inside her spikes.
Calista moved the final prisoner toward clean air as Ossian held Odelia's written conditions where every rescuer could read them.
She opened her eyes, pointed at the floor, plus shaped one signal Ossian could not hear, the word formed against her mouth without sound as one clear command: Break.
The transport reached the final floor marker while Veyra closed both hands around the stored force beneath it.
