Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 58 Destroying Valuable Things

The first stable fragment sat inside a clear case worth more than every object The Unmasked had purchased since its founding.

Maelle gave the archive a replacement value of six hundred twenty thousand credits while the west transport idled behind its locked doors.

'One archive buys a headquarters while those cases keep twelve people wearing Solenne's commands,' Ossian studied the release panel, 'people first... take the expensive answer again.'

The underground transfer site divided into three lanes, with prisoners behind glass on the left and the fragment archive across the right wall.

Each case displayed a stability date, a sale code, plus the living initials of somebody whose body remained connected elsewhere.

The nearest fragment carried Adra's old courier number even though she had escaped the control bridge less than an hour before.

Maelle photographed the code without touching the case, giving Ione proof that the archive tracked people after physical release.

Veyra guarded the central transport through seven black spikes, though their tips had not yet closed the silent field.

Odelia held the rear route through taps, while Calista moved toward the prisoner doors with Mantis reading every firing angle.

Maelle stopped beside a case containing copied Furnace channels, her stolen safety work visible beneath black ownership seals.

"I can preserve enough to prove derivation," she said, setting her hammer against the first lock without striking it.

Ossian heard Cathedral Cicada inside his prepared thoughts, pushing for one command that would make every frightened captive move together.

[Twelve unstable retainers are available for coordinated withdrawal]

[A single Court answer would improve survival efficiency by 18%]

'Twelve people don't become one animal when the exit narrows,' Ossian opened Odelia's channel as Cathedral pressed against his throat, 'the mask still wants a choir that can't refuse.'

Four prisoners wanted the left maintenance door, where Vaska had marked clean air through Orchid scent, while Three chose the vehicle ramp, since two could not climb and one refused to leave a sister behind.

Five gave conflicting answers through taps, gestures, plus written cards held against the glass, while Calista pointed to the fastest lane, but stopped after recognizing Mantis had ranked the people before their chosen exits.

"Separate teams," she said, changing her own plan, "I take the ramp, Vaska takes maintenance, Ossian holds the glass."

'No perfect convoy... good, confusion belongs to living people,' Ossian wore Cathedral, feeling vibration map every footstep, 'listen before leading.'

He sent three different rhythms through the floor, giving each group a timing pattern without forcing their pace into one answer.

The Cicada instinct fought him through his throat, demanding that the weak voices be folded beneath the strongest beat.

Odelia answered with uneven taps from behind, preserving the smallest group whenever Ossian's rhythm began swallowing it, while Synchronisation climbed from 34% to 57% after the first four prisoners reached Vaska's maintenance lane.

Veyra drove the second spike into the floor, removing sound from the ramp while stored impacts entered its black shaft.

Calista shifted to hand signs, guiding two injured prisoners around the vehicle without waiting for Ossian's voice.

'Cathedral wants a louder call where sound gets eaten... useful advice from a mask built around voice,' Ossian planted one gauntlet against the glass, 'make the floor carry choices.'

He changed the second rhythm into foot pressure, allowing the three ramp prisoners to feel their own timing beneath silent feet.

Behind him, Maelle opened the archive controls and found eighty-seven stable fragments linked to active grafts across the city.

Removing the cases without breaking those links would preserve the research while leaving every distant wearer under command authority.

Vaska tested one remote link through Orchid and found a heartbeat answering from three districts away.

The wearer had never entered this transport site, yet every change Maelle made to the archive coolant altered that distant pulse.

Keeping the hardware meant preserving a hand around eighty-seven bodies, even if the guild promised to study that control with care.

"The archive can be copied in four minutes," Ossian said, watching Veyra reach for the third spike, "Four minutes belongs to the people attached to it," Maelle replied, placing the decision key into his palm.

He put the key back in her hand without reading the salvage valuation a second time.

'Her work, her theft, her grief... don't make permission another thing I perform for her,' Ossian faced the glass, 'let Maelle choose the ruin.'

Maelle struck the archive coolant line, flooding every case with Furnace heat from her awakened hammer.

Ossian held the breaker open while she worked, giving each remote link a physical release route before heat destroyed its control channel.

The first twenty links failed across separate indicators, followed by thirty-one more as Vaska confirmed their living pulses remained present.

Stolen diagrams curled inside the screens, while eighty-seven ownership links failed open instead of preserving their remote commands.

Paloma's sealed voice came through Odelia's copper line, announcing that the guild had just destroyed recoverable evidence worth six hundred twenty thousand.

"Your salary argument can wait until the monster leaves," Bastien replied through the same line, dragging a prisoner sled under the opening glass.

Without softening, "Your salary is why monsters keep finding you at work," Paloma said, recording the destroyed value while Veyra lifted another spike.

'They are negotiating pay beside seven silence charges... sure, this became a real guild at the worst possible time,' Ossian pulled the last glass panel free, 'count people.'

All twelve prisoners reached separate chosen routes, with Odelia maintaining three signals instead of compressing them into one call.

Cathedral Cicada stopped demanding a dominant answer after the final prisoner refused Ossian's timing and still reached safety.

[Cathedral Cicada synchronisation: 100%]

[Mastery retained half of the creature's attributes]

[Identity Fracture: 50%]

Ossian staggered as every trapped vibration became a useful compartment in his mind, each voice filed where a person should have remained.

'Mastery feels clean while my head turns people into stored calls... no, name them before the system does,' he read twelve wrist cards, 'keep every person separate.'

Ione arrived beside the archive wreckage with a registry order requiring Odelia's old discharge officer to verify her current capability.

The officer had classified Odelia as unfit for life after the station injury, yet the rescue record showed command coverage above his own licensed grade.

His hand paused over the countersign until Ione placed the twelve completed route cards beneath it, while Odelia watched without smiling while he approved her reclassification from support-disabled to Resonance Specialist, Grade Three.

"That record fixes access, not my throat," she said, taking the signed page before anyone offered celebration.

Maelle stood over the ruined archive, where two years of stolen work had become black slurry under her feet.

"I'm attracted to you," she told Ossian, keeping her eyes on the wreckage, "but grief doesn't get to pay either of us tonight."

'Calista named attraction this morning, now Maelle does it over six hundred thousand in ash,' Ossian kept his answer plain while heat reached his face, 'romance scheduled itself beside the destroyed archive.'

"You made the choice I couldn't make for you," he said, leaving the space between them untouched.

Maelle nodded once, then recovered her decision key as evidence that the destruction had been hers.

Veyra drove the remaining spikes into the transport walls before Ione's containment line could reach her.

The final archive indicator failed after eighty-seven remote heartbeats remained active, proving destruction had released bodies without killing the people attached to them.

Ione sealed Maelle's decision key beside the countersigned reclassification, keeping one record of destroyed property and another of restored professional standing.

Odelia folded the new Grade Three page into her route case, refusing the officer's offered photograph while prisoners still crossed the loading site.

Ossian counted twelve separate escape cards again, using their names to resist the useful voice compartments that Cathedral mastery had left behind.

The seventh spike closed Dead Air around the last vehicle, taking every warning, command, plus impact sound with it, while Odelia reached for Resonance Spine before the field erased her final tap.

Its wheels kept turning toward the trapped ramp, carrying the remaining prisoners beyond every route Odelia could reach through ordinary sound.
