Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 60 The Note That Broke the Clinic

  • Next Chapter

Veyra's seven spikes released their stored force into the transport floor while three prisoners still occupied the rear half of the vehicle.

The first impact lifted every wheel from the tunnel, yet Dead Air swallowed the sound and left Ossian feeling motion through his feet.

'Seven spikes can fold the tunnel, while Odelia has nowhere safe to send their force,' Ossian braced the injured woman beneath the roof, 'clear bodies first.'

Calista pulled two prisoners through the rear door, using Mantis to choose stable footing without deciding who deserved the next place.

Ironback wanted Ossian to seize the final man and drag him across, but the man's graft tightened whenever another body touched his shoulder.

Ossian held out Dreadweight instead, giving him an unmoving rail that carried no command, while The man chose the empty right gauntlet, crossed the gap, plus rolled into Vaska's marked clean corridor.

Odelia remained inside with Resonance Spine planted through the floor, every stolen impact climbing its two prongs.

Veyra drove one heel against the roof and sent another silent detonation toward the cut support beneath the ramp.

'The ramp falls in nine seconds, and Odelia can't overpower the stored force head-on,' Ossian read Vaska's seven green marks, 'give her one path.'

Vaska struck the first mark with Thurible, spreading Orchid roots around the spike without feeding on living tissue nearby.

Calista pierced the second shaft through a window, while Mantis placed her spear tip inside a gap thinner than one finger.

Ossian changed from Ironback to Hollow Raven through the full ten-second transfer pause, leaving Calista to guard his unresponsive body.

Remembered routes opened inside the tunnel, most showing old service corridors that no longer existed after Solenne's alterations.

He closed each obsolete path until Raven left one direction through the floor toward an abandoned clinic below.

[The Court caller may release captured force through a forgotten lair]

[Structural survival projection: 41%]

'A clinic becomes a lair when nobody is using it... no, twelve patients are beneath that floor,' Ossian corrected the memory, 'route force away from beds.'

The forgotten clinic still contained twelve sedated counterfeit victims, making the downward route another sacrifice rather than an answer.

Maelle marked the reinforced block behind Veyra, where it could absorb a directed strike before failing, while Ossian pointed Odelia toward the housing, then traced all seven spikes across his forearm.

She nodded without producing sound, changed her staff angle, plus used the floor to collect each trapped vibration one at a time.

The first six pulses entered Resonance Spine as uneven pressure, making blood run from Odelia's nose onto her new throat rings.

Beside them, the seventh made Cathedral urge her to keep calling until the whole field answered.

Odelia looked at the condition on Ossian's arm, STOP ME AFTER BLOOD, then handed him the lower staff grip.

'One more Break Note comes after Odelia asked me to stop her,' Ossian set both gauntlets before fear changed the agreement, 'hold the limit... one release.'

Veyra recognized the Break Note and pulled every spike inward to crush Odelia before she could shape it.

Calista crossed the vehicle, taking the closing field across her Mantis armour while the numb hand lost another strip of skin.

Odelia opened her altered throat, releasing no audible song until Resonance Spine drove the vibration through the floor.

The Break Note struck all seven marked shafts from beneath, disrupting their shared timing by less than half a second.

Sound returned as one violent report, throwing Veyra against the roof while the prisoners covered their ears beyond the rear door.

Ossian wore Ironback again after the required pause, stored the engine's first rebound through his body, plus drove Dreadweight into its cracked housing.

The transport engine broke around both gauntlets, absorbing the remaining detonation before its axle tore through the clinic ceiling.

'No saved force in the empty plates... good, my arms get the honest version,' Ossian pulled free from the wreck, 'count everyone.'

Calista cleared the last prisoner before the ramp collapsed, while Vaska dragged Odelia outside Dead Air through the staff harness.

Ione's team contained Veyra beneath Caliper restraint, though she ordered medical care rather than an execution shot, while the prisoner signed SOLENNE before the device closed.

Ione compared the seven spikes with the destroyed archive links, then entered Veil Court as the Directorate's primary irregular threat.

The rescued count reached twelve at the archive site, plus five from the transferred vehicle, with no deaths during the final movement.

'Seventeen alive here, with twenty-two protected before this site... keep groups separate or my head files them as stock,' Ossian repeated every name, 'thirty-nine protected people in full.'

Paloma recovered Veil Court accounts, transport assets, plus mandatory liability payments with a gross value of seventy-four thousand seven hundred fifty credits.

Her twenty percent share removed fourteen thousand nine hundred fifty, raising the guild account from 150,200 to 210,000 credits.

[Current tribute reserve: 210,000 credits]

Ossian accepted the word tribute before noticing Calista watching his expression from beside the medical line.

The three-mask prepared body loadout remained proven under field switching, though Dreadweight stayed at Second Evolution without a new socket.

Odelia kept Cathedral for life, leaving Ossian with five owned faces and four permanent awakenings across the people beside him.

Medical staff counted thirty-nine protected candidates across the Veil Court operations, none of whom entered the six filed guild names by rescue.

Twelve asked for protection after discharge, but Paloma recorded them as prospective paid trainees rather than loyal followers.

'They want The Unmasked after seeing our worst hour, and legitimacy has brought insurance forms,' Ossian signed only the medical guarantees, 'no membership tonight.'

The clinic released Odelia after sealing her throat for forty-eight hours without voice use, and Calista waited until the last stretcher left.

No audience remained except a broken transport engine, two empty sleds, plus the paper count in Bastien's hand.

Calista caught Ossian by the front of his coat before he could inspect a pain spreading beneath his ribs.

"The medical count is finished," she said, checking his face once before pulling him close, and her mouth met his in one brief kiss chosen without Mantis speed.

'She kissed me after thirty-nine names... don't make the count part of the reward,' Ossian kept both hands where she could refuse them, 'let her set distance.'

Calista stayed close enough for his forehead to touch hers, while her numb hand rested against the coat seam over his injured ribs.

"You hid pain again," she said, moving her fingers until his body flinched, "You opened your hand inside a closing silence field," Ossian replied, seeing the missing skin along her palm.

"My injury doesn't erase yours," she said, stepping back without giving up command of the exchange.

"The kiss doesn't erase the argument either," he replied, hating how relief made the words feel easier.

Calista checked his ribs, ordered an image scan, plus refused to soften the instruction when he tried standing straight.

'Attraction survived, the kiss happened, and she still orders me onto a clinic bed... wonderful, this may be the healthy version,' Ossian obeyed, 'argue after imaging.'

Bastien entered with twelve signed training requests and a registry estimate that exceeded the recovered money by thirty-six thousand credits, while the rescued candidates did not ask for masks, ownership, or repayment for survival.

Each request carried a treatment choice separate from the training application, preventing future guild access from becoming payment for medical care.

Paloma made that separation the first condition of any expanded licence before allowing Ossian to answer them.

Their requests left every protected person free to reject work without losing the clinic guarantees already signed during the rescue.

They asked The Unmasked to become a real guild that could protect them after the raid ended under the new liability order.

Paloma opened a registration file before Ossian could promise what their current licence could not provide.
