The matter involving Henry and the others at the Osborn Carnival was settled with a phone call from George Stacy, the New York City Police Commissioner. After asking a few questions, the call ended there.
It was less an expression of concern than George assessing whether he needed to call them in to give statements.
Henry explained his part in just a few words: he had helped some people and only provided basic first aid. Nothing particularly serious had happened, so there was no need to summon him for questioning.
For one thing, there had simply been too many witnesses at the Osborn Carnival who had seen Spider-Man and another man wearing green armor and riding a flying glider. Just recording all those people’s statements was enough to keep the NYPD swamped.
Calling in one additional person wouldn’t help much. It wasn’t as though Henry’s testimony would immediately allow them to arrest Spider-Man or that green-skinned guy.
So Henry had narrowly escaped trouble.
Unfortunately, he was celebrating too early.
Henry had never considered that he had already caught the Green Goblin’s attention. It was only because the Goblin had been occupied by Spider-Man that he hadn’t had time to come after Henry.
Before long, Henry tossed the insignificant little incident to the back of his mind, thinking that as long as he stayed far away, trouble wouldn’t come looking for him.
But Henry had overlooked one thing: when there’s a car accident, it isn’t necessarily because you drove into another car. Sometimes another car comes and crashes into you.
Although Skye had started school again, Catherine Hepburn was worried that the girl was becoming too much of a shut-in. So every Saturday and Sunday, whenever it was time to take the tiger out for a walk, she dragged the girl along as well.
Henry abandoned his hellish idea of finding a white bedsheet, cutting two holes in it, throwing it over himself, and then going outside with the Three Ks.
He obediently watched the old woman and the girl fight over the privilege of walking the tiger.
Skye had initially been somewhat resistant. But once she took hold of Kitty’s chain and experienced what it was like to walk a tiger down the street, she discovered that it was absolutely wonderful!
Back when she had been leading the sewer children and looking for opportunities to prank Henry and Kitty, her biggest fear had been that the tiger would be let loose and charge into the group of children, biting everyone in sight.
Now that she was the one walking the tiger, she felt like Moses parting the Red Sea. Wherever she walked, people scattered as though fleeing gods and demons.
No one dared walk in front of her!
Only then did Skye understand why an old woman like Catherine Hepburn enjoyed taking the tiger for walks so much.
Because it felt damn good!
Now that the girl was happy, the old lady was unhappy.
They say old people can become like children, and Catherine Hepburn certainly wasn’t willing to have her own fun taken away. She would frequently fight with Skye over who got to hold Kitty’s leash.
The sight was enough to make Henry wonder whether he should simply adopt another tiger, so the two of them could each walk one.
Kitty already weighed over six hundred pounds and was steadily approaching seven hundred. It wouldn’t be long before she became some kind of tiger-pig hybrid.
Finding her a tigress as a mate should help her lose weight, at least from every conceivable perspective.
Whether through mating exercise or being chased around by a tigress...
But Henry’s idea remained just an idea. He never put it into practice.
Raising one tiger was already troublesome enough. To voluntarily raise a second one? He’d have to be seriously out of his mind.
Besides, both Skye and Catherine Hepburn unanimously rejected the proposal!
Walking another tiger and walking Kitty were two completely different things.
It was precisely because it was Kitty that fighting over the leash was fun. If they each had another tiger, there’d be no point.
Fine.
The Kryptonian couldn’t understand that line of thinking, so he decided not to interfere.
Another day of sketching in Central Park.
Henry helped Catherine Hepburn set up her easel and arranged her painting supplies on the worktable. The old lady was selecting a suitable landscape, preparing to showcase her less-than-impressive—in fact, downright clumsy—painting skills.
Skye, meanwhile, took a metal flying disc and ran a little farther away, playing fetch with Kitty.
The reason the flying disc wasn’t plastic should have been obvious.
An ordinary flying disc couldn’t survive a single bite from Kitty. A few tooth marks and it would be ruined. So they had to use metal, specifically an alloy.
Besides, this activity had been introduced by Skye.
The little girl had far more energy than the old lady, who would reach her destination and then simply let the tiger go graze on its own(?).
Skye had tried all sorts of ways to play with Kitty. In the end, throwing a flying disc was the one activity that could actually get the tiger to cooperate.
The scene before him was so harmonious that Henry was about to lie down on the grass in Central Park, bask in the autumn sunshine, and take a short nap when a familiar roar approached from the distance.
He had heard that sound not long ago.
The Green Goblin’s flying glider.
But he didn’t hear the familiar sound of Spider-Man swinging by on webs, so the Green Goblin wasn’t after the little spider for another round of their mutually abusive relationship.
Then where was this guy going?
Should he follow him and watch the fun?
Those two questions had barely surfaced in Henry’s mind when he realized the Green Goblin’s flying glider was heading straight toward him!
"Kate, get down!"
Henry shouted as he sprang forward.
With a deft application of force, he knocked the old woman off the little stool and onto the soft grass.
The Green Goblin hadn’t even arrived yet.
The pumpkin bomb came first!
Henry slapped the bomb upward, and it exploded in midair a moment later.
Fortunately, the thing wasn’t a fragmentation weapon. Detonating it in the air didn’t increase its lethality. Instead, it kept the explosion as far away from the people on the ground as possible.
The relentless Green Goblin then used the tremendous impact force of his flying glider to smash straight through the unfinished painting.
The two pointed prongs at the front were like lances on a charging knight. They impaled Henry and carried him into the air.
Thrown skyward, Henry didn’t dare reveal his true abilities with an overly dramatic move.
All he could do was curse.
"Are you insane?!"
Four strange notes of laughter rang out.
The Green Goblin bent down until his face was close to Henry’s.
"I once gave you a chance to make the most of your talents at Osborn Industries and live a good life. But you turned it down.
"I’ll admit, though, the technology you provided was excellent. It couldn’t improve my predicament, but everything I’ve suffered today is thanks to you. Hahaha! Yes, that’s right. It’s all because of you!"
Henry gritted his teeth and identified the man.
"Norman Osborn!"
Only then did Henry realize where he’d miscalculated.
The Green Goblin had killed those Osborn Industries directors because the two sides were enemies. Those bank representatives had been trying to swallow his company.
Henry didn’t know the details, but he estimated the situation was probably similar to the clues from the movie. And if not, well, the bank-appointed directors probably weren’t exactly innocent victims.
But what about himself?
Henry had assumed that by providing the formula and related technology for the Alzheimer’s drug, he’d already done Norman a favor.
Surely the Green Goblin wouldn’t come after him anymore, right?
In reality, Henry had refused Norman’s invitation and hadn’t joined Osborn Industries. He hadn’t helped perfect the Green Goblin serum, nor had he helped Osborn Industries overcome the difficulties imposed by the military and its internal board members.
Under the influence of the Green Goblin personality, that had become another reason for Norman Osborn to hate him.
What the hell kind of nonsense was this?!
He hadn’t emptied his pockets to help someone all the way to the end, and somehow that had become his fault?
