Spider-Man, of course, wasn’t going to stand by and let the Green Goblin attack innocent civilians and police officers. He hurriedly knocked the flying glider off course. But if Henry hadn’t stepped in, these two officers would have been dead nine times out of ten.
Although American superheroes were committed to keeping casualties at zero, villains weren’t exactly cooperative.
The fact that they didn’t directly take innocent people hostage was already a sign of considerable morality. Expecting villains to worry about civilian lives and avoid collateral damage? You might as well tell them to wash up and go to bed.
Now that the red-and-green combatants had moved elsewhere, Henry finally had a chance to ask the fallen officers, "Are you two all right?"
"I’m fine."
"My leg’s been shot. I can’t stand."
"Officer, I’m going to drag you somewhere safe now. It’s going to be a little rough. Is that all right?" Henry asked the fallen, heavyset officer.
"Do it, kid. Better than staying here and serving as a target."
"Here we go."
Henry moved behind the heavyset officer, hooked both hands under his armpits, and dragged him backward.
The female officer beside them raised her gun and covered their retreat.
In fact, the reason she’d been moving so slowly earlier was because she’d been trying to hold her gun in one hand while pulling her colleague with the other. She simply didn’t have enough strength in one arm to drag her hefty partner.
Once Henry took over, he still made sure to restrain his strength, efficiently pulling the injured officer behind cover. He then examined the man’s leg.
"Looks like a closed fracture. I’ll make a temporary splint to immobilize it. You need to get to a hospital."
Henry performed a simple diagnosis. He didn’t need X-ray vision. The abnormal bend in the fat policeman’s leg and the obvious redness and swelling were enough to tell him something inside had gone wrong.
He didn’t perform any overly miraculous treatment, either. He simply used ordinary first-aid procedures. He broke off two wooden boards from the carnival decorations, pulled out some severed electrical wire and ribbons, straightened the officer’s leg, and secured it with the makeshift splint.
The female officer standing guard nearby had already called for an ambulance over the radio. But her eyes remained fixed on Spider-Man and the Green Goblin in the distance, afraid that their fight might come back in her direction.
After finishing the heavyset officer’s first aid, Henry went on to help several civilians and police officers who had been knocked unconscious or injured inside the combat zone. He first moved them somewhere safe, then provided basic first aid.
Throughout the entire process, he behaved like an ordinary person. Aside from blocking the bullets for the two officers earlier, Henry didn’t display any other extraordinary abilities.
That was also thanks to Spider-Man doing his best to restrain the Green Goblin’s destruction. Although there were casualties among the people nearby, none were severe enough to warrant a black triage tag and abandonment of treatment.
...Well, except for the high-rise balcony that had taken the brunt of the Green Goblin’s attack. It was too far away for Henry to say whether anyone up there had been killed.
There was, however, a woman clinging to the edge of the collapsing balcony, screaming at an octave three levels higher than normal and calling for someone to save her.
Spider-Man had tried to make a move several times, only for the Green Goblin to intercept him and knock him somewhere else.
Could that woman be the legendary Mary Jane Watson? Spider-Man’s secret crush? Or his girlfriend?
Henry immediately abandoned the idea of rescuing her.
He didn’t want to steal someone’s girl, nor did he want to expose his abilities in front of so many people. And he didn’t even know the woman.
Whether he ran up there or flew up there, he’d be far too conspicuous.
It was better to stay on the ground and do what an ordinary person was capable of doing.
Henry’s obsession with "zero casualties" wasn’t nearly as strong as that of traditional superheroes. Do what one can and leave the rest to fate.
The battle between red and green didn’t last much longer.
Spider-Man seized an opportunity and reached under the Green Goblin’s feet, grabbing at the flying glider.
He pulled out a bundle of wires and components.
Half of the flying glider’s functions immediately died, and its maneuverability plummeted.
Seeing that the situation was no longer favorable, the Green Goblin fled in a flash. If he didn’t leave now, once he lost his mobility, even the police would be able to join the pursuit.
Spider-Man, meanwhile, was busy rescuing the woman who had fallen from the balcony. He had no time to chase the Green Goblin down and beat him to the ground.
After saving her, Spider-Man disappeared somewhere, presumably to find a quiet place to whisper sweet nothings.
In any case, the Osborn Industries-sponsored World Carnival was left in complete disarray.
The two masked men responsible for the greatest destruction had departed. The police officers who had been forced into hiding by the machine guns mounted on the flying glider gradually emerged and began helping restore order.
Henry had just finished treating the wound of an injured man and was applying pressure to stop the bleeding.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to provide more extensive treatment. He simply didn’t have any clean gauze at hand, and the man’s injury wasn’t serious.
There was no point in having the man die from an infection after narrowly escaping death from blood loss. That would be a case of good intentions causing harm.
Besides, Henry could already hear the sound of ambulances approaching.
And there was more than one.
Clearly, a large number of emergency responders were beginning to converge on the devastated plaza. Once they arrived, there would certainly be professionals who could treat the civilians’ injuries properly.
At this moment, Skye emerged from the shelter with Catherine Hepburn and reunited with Henry.
The condition of the plaza might have been terrible, but for Skye, a child who had once lived in the sewers of New York, it didn’t feel particularly remarkable.
Catherine Hepburn, however, was another matter.
"This is awful. I’ve lived through World War I and World War II, and New York was never this bad during either of them."
Henry didn’t have time to join in Catherine’s lament and make a few sarcastic remarks about the world’s so-called beacon of freedom.
Someone else interrupted.
"What happened to him?"
It was an official paramedic carrying a first-aid bag.
She was a white woman with long hair, around thirty years old, and looked mature and capable.
Henry stepped aside.
"Looks like he was cut by flying debris. I’m not sure whether there are still fragments in the wound, so I just applied pressure to stop the bleeding for now."
"Okay, let me take a look. Sir, are you conscious? I’m going to move your hand now and take a look at the wound."
The female paramedic spoke to the injured man as she took gauze, bandages, and other supplies from her first-aid kit, efficiently treating his injuries.
Seeing that the professional’s treatment was proceeding without any obvious problems, Henry didn’t need to interfere. Even if there were problems, it wasn’t the place of an amateur like him to criticize a professional.
In any case, Henry was preparing to leave with the old woman and the girl.
"Hey, you’re Henry Brown, aren’t you?"
The female paramedic stopped him.
"Do you want that wound on your back treated?"
Henry turned his head and looked at the back of his thin jacket.
After blocking the machine-gun fire earlier, it hadn’t been shredded into rags, but it certainly looked rather miserable.
Still, it was only the clothes that looked bad.
Henry waved his hand.
"No need. I’m fine."
"Looks like you’re really just like the rumors say."
The female paramedic sighed before introducing herself.
"I’m Cathy Webb. You helped provide first aid to the people here, didn’t you? I want to tell you—you did a good job."
Henry froze.
He hadn’t expected to be praised and had no idea what she was getting at.
The female paramedic, however, didn’t seem embarrassed or shy in the slightest. She simply used the same soothing tone one might use with a child or an injured patient.
"I know what you did during 9/11. I believe people who do good things at least deserve to hear someone say, ’Well done.’"
"Oh. Thank you."
"All right, I’ve got to help the others. If you have any trouble, I’m sure you’re more familiar with the police station than I am."
The female paramedic quickly headed toward another injured person.
By then, more ambulances and paramedics had arrived. A group of firefighters and fire trucks also arrived on the scene.
"Henry."
The old lady came up beside him and slipped her arm through his.
"I’m suddenly very interested in what you did during that incident. You’ve never told me."
"Same thing as most of the volunteers. I helped out. I just happened to know George, so I was a little more noticeable."
The Kryptonian offered his excuse.
