Chapter 372: Why Are You Looking at Me Like That?

David Hayes was also there today.

After his promotion, he was now able to attend some of the Fawcett Group’s more important meetings.

He sat to the side, watching as Caleb Summers publicly contradicted Charles Prescott, whose expression immediately soured.

When titans clash, a mere mortal like him couldn’t get involved at all.

Having been publicly humiliated by Caleb Summers, Charles Prescott had a dark expression on his face as he left the meeting room.

David Hayes hadn’t left either. He first went to greet Nathan Fawcett, "Brother-in-law."

Nathan Fawcett glanced at him, said nothing, and left with Caleb Summers.

David Hayes stood to the side, frowning as he watched Nathan Fawcett dismiss him without a second glance.

’I mean, I’m married to Sharon Sutton,’ he thought. ’Doesn’t that make me part of their family?’

’That makes me family with Nathan Fawcett too!’

’And yet he won’t even look at me.’

’Acting as if he completely looks down on me.’

David Hayes clenched his fists, unable to suppress his growing resentment.

He returned to his office and his phone buzzed. It was a message from Lucy Todd. "David, how are things with you and Sharon? She’s not still mad at you, is she?"

He hadn’t even been thinking about it, but now that Lucy Todd had brought it up, he was reminded that Sharon Sutton was still angry with him.

David Hayes sat down, feeling pissed off as he thought about how he had to put up with crap from everyone he met.

He texted back, "She’s still pissed!"

"Then you should try to cheer her up," Lucy Todd replied. "Women get emotional easily when they’re pregnant. She’s carrying your baby, you know! You shouldn’t let her get upset."

Hearing Lucy Todd’s words, David Hayes suddenly thought, ’This woman is so understanding.’

’When I’m with her, I never feel as suffocated as I do when I’m with Sharon Sutton.’

David Hayes asked, "What time do you get off work tonight?"

Lucy Todd replied, "Six o’clock."

"I’ll come pick you up!"

"Oh?" Lucy Todd sounded both surprised and flattered.

Sure enough, David Hayes really did come to pick her up after work.

She was surprised to see him. She walked over, got in the car, and asked, "Are you in a bad mood?"

David Hayes said, "Ever get the feeling that no matter how hard you try, people will still look down on you?"

Lucy Todd said, "How could that be? You’re so exceptional. Who would dare look down on you?"

"What’s the point of being exceptional?" David Hayes said. "In their eyes, I’m just some guy who was parachuted in, someone who’s riding his wife’s coattails. They won’t even give me a second glance!"

"David." Lucy Todd looked at him tenderly. "It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. In my heart, you’re the best."

David Hayes looked at her gentle expression and said, "Let’s go get something to eat."

He had to admit, he liked how he felt when he was with her.

’At least he didn’t have to placate her all the time, like he did with Sharon Sutton.’

’Sharon Sutton was a spoiled princess who couldn’t do anything for herself. If she was home alone, she still needed someone to wait on her hand and foot.’

’It wasn’t like with Lucy Todd, who always took care of him.’

Lucy Todd asked, "Should we invite Sharon to join us?"

"Why would we invite her?" David Hayes said. "If she comes, she’ll just cause a scene!"

Lucy Todd said, "I’m just afraid she’ll be upset if she finds out."

"Then let’s just not let her find out," David Hayes said, driving off with Lucy Todd to dinner.

That afternoon, when Anne Sutton went to Anna Linden’s office, she heard the sound of things being thrown even before she walked in.

Anne Sutton entered and saw Anna Linden sitting there with a thunderous expression.

It was rare to see Dr. Linden, who was always so composed and proficient at her job, looking like this.

Anne Sutton said, "Dr. Linden?"

Anna Linden looked up. Seeing it was Anne Sutton, she felt a flash of embarrassment, but her expression remained dark. "What is it?" she snapped.

Anne Sutton said, "The files."

She handed the files to Anna Linden. "Did something happen?"

Anna Linden said, "I want to go to Westhaven."

"Why Westhaven?"

’She hadn’t been back to Westhaven since the day she brought Nathan Fawcett over.’

’Anna Linden hated that place!’

Anna Linden didn’t explain, simply saying to Anne Sutton, "You’re coming with me."

Anne Sutton asked, "When?"

"Tonight."

"Isn’t that a little sudden?"

Anna Linden gave her a look, picked up her phone, and told Chloe Chase to book the plane tickets.

That evening, Anne Sutton stood in the airport terminal, calling Ian. "You’ll stay with Grandma tonight," she said. "I have something to do and might not be back."

’They had left in such a hurry, and judging by Anna Linden’s mood, they probably wouldn’t be staying there for long.’

Anne Sutton hadn’t had time to pick up Ian.

Ian replied, "Okay. Are you going on a business trip?"

Anne Sutton said, "Yes, something came up."

While she was on the phone with Ian, Chloe Chase said, "It’s time to board."

Anne Sutton quickly ended the call.

Because Anna Linden’s decision to come was so sudden, Anne Sutton didn’t have time to notify Nathan Fawcett.

So after they landed, she didn’t ask Nathan Fawcett to come pick them up either.

Anne Sutton looked at Anna Linden and asked, "Where are we staying tonight?"

Anna Linden gave her a look. "What do you think?"

"Why don’t we stay at my family’s house?" Anne suggested, knowing how much Anna Linden disliked the Fawcett Family.

’She probably wouldn’t want to stay at the Fawcett Residence even if she was invited.’

Anne Sutton said, "My mother is in Veridia, but the house is empty right now!"

"Fine."

’Surprisingly, Anna Linden didn’t refuse.’

Anne Sutton was quite surprised, but she led her to the Sutton family home.

After they settled in at the Sutton residence, Anne Sutton sent a message to Nathan Fawcett: "I’ve arrived in Veridia."

Nathan Fawcett sent back a question mark. "Here to see me?"

Anne Sutton replied, "I came with your mother."

Nathan Fawcett paused for a moment after reading that. "Then where are you now?"

"At my family’s home. The Sutton residence."

Anne Sutton added, "Your mother probably wouldn’t want to go to the Fawcett Residence, so I didn’t bring her over."

’Even though Nathan Fawcett’s father had been gone for years, Anna Linden had never been able to let go of her grudge and was completely unwilling to set foot in the Fawcett home.’

Nathan Fawcett replied, "Should I come over now?"

Anne Sutton wrote, "Sure, come on over."

She was in the courtyard, admiring the brightly blooming flowers in the garden bed by the lamplight, when Nathan Fawcett walked in and stopped beside her. "What are you thinking about so seriously?"

Anne Sutton looked up at him. "Waiting for you, of course!"

"Where’s my mom?" Nathan Fawcett glanced toward the house.

Anne Sutton said, "She’s inside. You should go in and say hello."

Nathan Fawcett said, "Alright."

"If you’re scared, I can go with you," she teased.

Hearing her, Nathan Fawcett chuckled, walked up the steps, and went inside.

Anna Linden was in the study; Anne Sutton had let her use it.

When she saw Nathan Fawcett walk in, she stated, "Anne Sutton told you I was here."

Nathan Fawcett asked, "Why did you suddenly come here?"

Anna Linden glanced at him and asked, "Where’s Caleb Summers?"

Hearing that his mother was here to find Caleb Summers, Nathan Fawcett said, "He’s probably out somewhere right now. If you need to see him, I can call him and have him come over."

"Then get him over here."

Hearing Anna Linden’s command, Nathan Fawcett stepped aside and made the call.

When Caleb Summers heard that Anna Linden was in town, he rushed right over.

He walked into the study, saw Anna Linden, and said, "Auntie Linden."

Anna Linden stared at him intently. Baffled by her gaze, Caleb Summers asked, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
