Chapter 371: Dealing a Blow to Charles Prescott

"Much better than your mother!" Sharon Sutton said. "At least she won’t go out of her way to upset me."

"Right, right, you’re right," David Hayes said. "So I don’t have a problem with it. It’s a good idea for you to hire a housekeeper to take care of you. So, about buying the house... can you stop being mad at me, okay?"

Sharon Sutton looked at David Hayes. Even though he kept apologizing, she felt utterly disheartened. "I don’t want to have this baby anymore."

When David Hayes heard this, he stared at her. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"I’m suddenly realizing that marrying you was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made."

Hearing this, David Hayes said, "Sharon, don’t be like this. It wasn’t easy for us to get where we are today."

"You mean for *you* to get where you are today, right?" Sharon Sutton looked at him. "I used to think that as long as we had feelings for each other, we could overcome anything. But David Hayes, do you have any feelings for me at all? Why do I get the feeling you’re only with me to use me?"

She used to believe in love.

But now, his attitude truly disappointed her.

In everything he did, he never once considered her perspective.

Hearing her words, David Hayes said, "Why would you think that? Haven’t I sacrificed enough for you? Who do you think I’m working my ass off for, from dawn till dusk! And your family, the way they treat me—I haven’t said a word, have I? I know they look down on me, and I’ve been enduring it all. For you, I even made Lucy Todd get an abortion."

"Don’t you talk about that child!" Sharon Sutton cried. "It makes me sick! If I’d known she was your childhood sweetheart, if I’d known you were with her behind my back, I never would have even started dating you."

She hated...

Hated herself for believing his words.

He said he didn’t love Lucy Todd.

And she believed him!

But now, he was still tangled up with that woman.

David Hayes said, "Fine, I won’t talk about it. Can we just drop it? And you need to stop saying things just because you’re angry. I haven’t done anything to you, but you make it sound like I’m some kind of bully! Tell me, if we really break up, what happens to the baby? Do you really want to abort it? Won’t your mother just have to worry about you all over again? She just got divorced and is already heartbroken. Don’t you think it’s a bad idea to go and add to her troubles right now?"

Sharon Sutton said, "Then I’ll have the baby and raise it myself."

David Hayes countered, "If you really do that, you’ll be a divorcée with a child. What will people think of you? Why would you throw away a perfectly good life? What’s so bad about being with me right now?"

Sharon Sutton looked at the man before her. "Forget it. I can’t get through to you. I want to go stay at my sister’s place for a few days. It’s been a while since I’ve seen my mom, and I want to visit her."

Hearing this, David Hayes froze for a second. "But Veridia is so far away."

"How far could it be?" Sharon Sutton retorted. "It’s not like I’m going to walk there."

David Hayes said, "Sharon, wait until I have some time off, and I’ll go with you! I’ll be worried if you go now! You’re pregnant. How can I rest easy with you traveling all by yourself?"

Sharon Sutton looked at David Hayes and said, "I’ve already made up my mind."

Soon, they arrived home. David Hayes followed her upstairs and through the door, then suddenly wrapped his arms around her.

"What are you doing?" Sharon Sutton was in a terrible mood after everything that had happened that day.

She felt if she didn’t get away for a while, she would eventually be suffocated by her anger.

David Hayes said, "Don’t go to Veridia. I couldn’t bear to be without you! What if you go there and never come back?"

"Wouldn’t that be great?" Sharon Sutton said. "Then there’d be plenty of room for you and Lucy Todd. She went with you to buy the house today, didn’t she? It makes me wonder if she’s the one who’s actually the lady of this house."

"She just happened to know the person selling the house."

"You have money. You can buy a house anywhere," Sharon Sutton said. "Why did you have to go and owe her a favor?"

"What is it you want from me?" Looking at her, David Hayes was starting to get irritated.

But he didn’t dare let her go to Veridia.

He was afraid she would talk recklessly in front of her mother and sister—especially Anne Sutton. If that happened, Anne would definitely come and cause trouble for him.

He had worked too hard to get to where he was. No matter how unhappy he was with the situation, he had to placate Sharon!

Sharon Sutton said, "I just want to visit my mom and sister. Is that so wrong? Why won’t you let me go? You’re busy with your own things every day. Me going to see my family won’t affect you in the slightest!"

"I’m sorry, it’s my fault," David Hayes said. "I’ve just been too busy lately. I’ll talk to my boss and arrange to spend more time at home with you from now on. How does that sound?"

Sharon Sutton looked at this man. When he wanted to be gentle, he could say all the right things.

And just moments before, he had been complaining about how busy he was.

...

Nathan Fawcett was in Veridia for two days. He returned to Westhaven shortly after Charles Prescott brought Leo back.

This time, however, he didn’t bring Ian with him.

Ian wanted to stay in Veridia with Anne Sutton, so Nathan Fawcett let him have his way.

Caleb Summers joined Nathan Fawcett at the Fawcett Group. Previously, Charles Prescott had been in charge of the company’s affairs. Now, with both Caleb and Nathan there—two men who had once been the pillars of the Linden Group—it felt like a gross underutilization of their talents.

On Monday, during a meeting, Charles Prescott stood and presented the sales plan for the current period.

Caleb Summers sat beside Nathan Fawcett, watching Charles Prescott.

Charles Prescott said, "If there are no objections, we’ll execute the plan as I’ve just described."

"I have an objection." Caleb Summers raised his hand.

Charles Prescott: "..."

He looked at Caleb Summers, recognizing him as someone from the Linden Group.

He knew Ethan Linden had been stripped of his position and had come here trying to snatch his job.

But Charles Prescott couldn’t understand why Caleb Summers was here making a scene as well.

However, in front of everyone, he didn’t dismiss Caleb Summers’s objection. He simply said, "Go on."

Caleb Summers smiled and stood up.

He was used to the high-stakes environment of the Linden Group. Being here felt like a massive step down, almost insultingly easy.

Caleb Summers stood to one side and systematically dismantled several of Charles Prescott’s points.

The longer Charles Prescott listened, the darker his expression became.

When Caleb Summers finished, he looked at Charles Prescott and asked, "So, what does President Prescott think of my suggestions?"

Everyone looked at Caleb Summers. Knowing he was a friend of Ethan Linden, they couldn’t help but be impressed.

Whether or not he had convinced Charles Prescott, he had, at the very least, convinced everyone else in the room.

They had always considered Charles Prescott to be incredibly reliable; in their day-to-day work, they couldn’t imagine finding anyone more outstanding.

But after hearing Caleb Summers speak today, they realized...

’As expected of someone from the Linden Group. He’s brilliant!’

Seeing Caleb Summers looking at him, Charles Prescott stood up and said, "Mr. Summers makes some excellent points. I admit I hadn’t considered those factors."

The corner of Caleb Summers’s mouth lifted in a smirk. "Don’t mention it. President Prescott is only human, so it’s normal to have oversights. I don’t mind teaching you a thing or two in the future."

With that, he sat back down.

Nathan Fawcett glanced at Caleb Summers. He knew Caleb was flamboyant and loved the spotlight, but seeing him take Charles Prescott down a peg like this still made Nathan quite happy.
