Chapter 370: It’s All Your Money

He also didn’t mention that he had dropped Lucy Todd off this morning.

Sharon Sutton said, "She still keeps your picture in her wallet. That woman really is hung up on you! I bet she sees you have money now and wants to cozy up to you!"

David Hayes had recently been promoted.

He and Lucy Todd had both come from the countryside; they were just ordinary people.

His recent, exceptional promotion had elevated him to a status his peers wouldn’t even dare to dream of.

’Of course Lucy Todd would want to cozy up to him!’

David Hayes said, "What’s the point of her trying to get on my good side? She doesn’t even work at my company."

"Because you have money now!" Sharon Sutton said. "You’re pretty well-off."

"And isn’t all my money yours?"

"Good, as long as you understand!" Sharon Sutton said. "If you don’t treat me right, my sister will never forgive you."

At this, David Hayes fell silent.

He knew Anne Sutton looked down on him.

Naturally, he wasn’t happy to hear Sharon say something like that.

’He was the one working himself to the bone every day, yet she...’

’...only remembered her sister’s help!’

After dinner, David Hayes dropped Sharon Sutton off at home and said, "You should go to bed. I need to stop by the office to grab something."

"Now?" Sharon Sutton asked. "You’re going to the office at this hour?"

"I’m making more money now, which naturally means more work," David Hayes said. "It can’t be helped. You go on and get some rest. Don’t wait up for me."

With that, he walked straight out the door.

Sharon Sutton sat on the sofa, her spirits sinking as she looked around the empty house.

His salary wasn’t high before, but at least he could often spend time with her.

But ever since his promotion, he’d been coming home later and later. Sometimes he’d even be out working overtime all night.

’She knew his work was difficult, but she was now realizing that even though their life had improved, this wasn’t what she wanted.’

With Mrs. Hayes gone, Sharon Sutton didn’t waste any time. She hired a maternity nurse to come and take care of her at home.

That afternoon, when David Hayes came in and saw a stranger in the house, he frowned and asked Sharon Sutton, "Who is she?"

Sharon Sutton said, "She’s a helper I hired to take care of me."

David Hayes looked at Sharon Sutton. "Didn’t I tell you not to hire anyone?"

Sharon Sutton replied, "Why not? Hiring a helper doesn’t even cost that much."

It was just a little over ten thousand a month.

It wasn’t like they couldn’t afford it now.

Sharon Sutton had grown up in the Sutton Family. They were well-off, and there had always been maids at home to take care of her.

She didn’t see anything wrong with hiring a maternity nurse now.

David Hayes said, "You’re so generous, aren’t you! Without even asking for my opinion."

"Then what was I supposed to do?" Sharon Sutton retorted. "Your mom’s gone back home, and you’re hardly ever here. I’m all alone with no one to look after me. What if something happens?"

"You were the one who made my mom leave."

"..." Sharon Sutton stared at him. "So you think this is a bad thing? Then why did you tell her to go home! I didn’t force you."

David Hayes said, "Of course you think it’s great. I’m the one who works his butt off every day to earn money. Have you ever stopped to think that what my parents make in a month isn’t even enough to pay for your helper?"

After saying his piece, he didn’t say another word and went straight into the bedroom.

Sharon Sutton sat on the sofa, not having expected to get into a fight with him over hiring a helper.

That night, neither of them spoke. The next morning, David Hayes left early.

Sharon Sutton paid him no mind.

In the afternoon, she went to the hospital for a prenatal check-up. On her way back, she had the helper accompany her for a walk.

Now that Anne Sutton and her mother had both gone to Veridia, and she couldn’t possibly go back to her father’s place, she was just happy to have the helper for company.

While they were out, however, she saw Mrs. Hayes and David Hayes together. And with them was Lucy Todd.

Seeing the three of them, Sharon Sutton froze, almost thinking her eyes were playing tricks on her.

Lucy Todd looked at David Hayes and said, "David, you’re amazing, buying such a big house for your mother."

David Hayes said, "Sharon Sutton didn’t want to live with my parents. I had no choice but to buy them a new house."

Besides, he had the money now.

He could afford the mortgage payments!

Lucy Todd said, "Mrs. Hayes, your son is so filial. I’m so envious. You’re already living a life of comfort. Unlike me, I’m such a disappointment."

"Nonsense!" Mrs. Hayes said. "Lucy, you’re very capable yourself. Once we have the house, you can come visit us all the time. Come on, let’s head back!"

Seeing this, Sharon Sutton walked over.

"David Hayes."

When David Hayes saw Sharon Sutton standing there with the hired helper, he frowned. "You’re pregnant. What are you doing running around outside instead of resting at home?"

Sharon Sutton looked at him and said, "If I hadn’t come out ’running around,’ how would I have run into you all? What do you think you’re doing?"

’He sent his mother back to their hometown, and now he’s called her back again!’

’That’s bad enough, but he’s with Lucy Todd!’

Seeing Sharon Sutton’s angry expression, Lucy Todd said, "Sharon, please don’t misunderstand. We were just helping Mrs. Hayes buy a house today. It just so happens that a friend of mine works for the real estate agency, so I came along."

"Buying a house?" Sharon Sutton glanced at the real estate agency’s bag in Mrs. Hayes’s hand, then turned to David Hayes. "You bought your mother a house?"

David Hayes replied, "You didn’t want to live with them, right? I had to buy them a house!"

"You bought a house—something this big—and you didn’t tell me?" Sharon Sutton demanded. "You get angry and give me the silent treatment for a whole night just because I hired a helper, but now you’re buying a house and you bring *her* along?"

She stared at Lucy Todd in disbelief.

Mrs. Hayes cut in, "Why should we tell you about buying a house? My son earned all the money. What did you contribute? Besides, you’re using my son’s money to hire a helper? You’ve got some nerve! I’ve lived my whole life and never had anyone wait on me, but you sure know how to live it up!"

Sharon Sutton looked at Mrs. Hayes’s domineering expression. Ever since David Hayes’s promotion, his mother had made it clear she looked down on her.

’She thinks I just sit at home all day doing nothing.’

’But I’m pregnant!’

’He was the one who told me to rest at home and not go to work.’

David Hayes said, "Forget it, Mom. You guys head back first. I’m going home."

After speaking, he walked over, glanced at Sharon Sutton, and said, "Let’s go. I’ll take you home."

’He didn’t want to make a huge scene with her.’

’After all, he was still a little afraid of Anne Sutton.’

Sharon Sutton watched the man walk toward her and ignored him.

In the car, David Hayes said, "I’ll drop the issue of you hiring the maternity nurse, okay? My parents raised me. I’m just buying them a house so they’ll have a place to live. That way, it’ll be convenient for us to visit them too, right?"

Sharon Sutton said sulkily, "It’s your money. Why are you telling me all this? You’re free to spend it however you want."

David Hayes said, "My mom doesn’t have a filter, but that’s not what I think, so don’t take it to heart. Sharon, we’re the family now, you and I! Don’t treat me like the enemy. You know how much I love you! I was just worried you’d hire a helper who was unreliable. Then the money would be wasted, and you wouldn’t even be taken care of properly."
