Chapter 369: I Worry About You Being Out There Alone

David Hayes said, "You’re being too sensitive! Sharon, things aren’t as bad as you think. Lucy Todd is just a relative."

"She was the other woman, and she was pregnant with your child!"

"That was all years ago," David said. "Do you really think it’s possible for us to get back together now?"

"You’re the only one who knows if you two could get back together. How am I supposed to know?"

David said, "I’m going to take a shower and change. I have to go to the office in a bit. I’m swamped with work right now, I even have to work on weekends, so I hope you can be a little more understanding. My mom is staying here to take care of you. Otherwise, when I’m busy and can’t make it home, there’d be no one to look after you if something happened. So just stop fighting with her. I’ll talk to her, okay?"

After saying that, he went into the bathroom.

Sharon Sutton sat on the bed, watching him. He acted so nonchalant, but she was absolutely furious.

He looked at Sharon Sutton and said, "Let’s go eat. Come on, let’s get some breakfast."

As he spoke, he lifted Sharon Sutton off the bed and led her out of the room.

At the dining table, Mrs. Hayes had already prepared breakfast. She had always doted on David Hayes; after all, in her eyes, her son was the greatest man in the world.

Every day, no matter how early, she would get up to cook breakfast for David.

Lucy Todd was there today as well.

She was sitting next to Mrs. Hayes. When she saw David Hayes and Sharon Sutton walk out, she said, "David, Sharon, come eat."

Sharon Sutton sat down and stared at the woman, who was putting on a soft, weak act, as if Sharon were the one bullying her.

Sharon Sutton said, "So you didn’t leave last night because it was too late. Why are you still here now? You’re really shameless, aren’t you, Lucy Todd!"

At Sharon’s words, Lucy Todd’s face stiffened.

Mrs. Hayes said defensively, "I told her to have breakfast before she leaves. What kind of attitude is that to show my guest?"

Sharon glanced at Mrs. Hayes and said, "Then why don’t you just leave with her? Go stay at her place! Just don’t stay in my house."

Hearing this, David interjected, "Sharon!"

Mrs. Hayes cried, "David, do you see this? This woman... I raised you all by myself, and now that you’re grown up and earning money, you marry a woman who treats me like this! I cook for her every day, and she shows not a single ounce of gratitude! All I did was let Lucy stay for one night because it was too late, and now she wants to kick me out!"

David said to his mother, "Mom, she doesn’t like it. You shouldn’t have let Lucy stay."

"I had Lucy sleep in my room; it didn’t affect you two at all. But her... look at her last night! Did she even care about you? She just let you sleep on the couch all night! This woman doesn’t love you one bit!"

David said, "Alright, that’s enough! I still have to go to work after this."

Lucy said, "Sharon, please don’t be angry. I’ll leave right after I eat. Everything between David and me is in the past. We were young and foolish. Now that you’re with him, I have no intention of causing any trouble."

"See? Just look at her..." Mrs. Hayes said to Sharon. "Lucy is so much more sensible. You’re just so petty."

"I’m petty?" Lucy’s words had been bad enough, but as soon as Mrs. Hayes opened her mouth, every sentence she spoke hit one of Sharon’s nerves.

She said, "Fine! If you won’t make your mom leave, then I will! I’ll just move out, how about that?"

After saying her piece, Sharon stood up and went straight to the bedroom to pack.

David watched her leave and called out, "Sharon."

Mrs. Hayes said, "Let her go. Let’s see where she can even run off to! She’s such an impossibly spoiled brat!"

David finished eating and went into the bedroom. Seeing that Sharon had almost finished packing her things, he said, "Don’t be like this. If you don’t want her here, I’ll ask my mom to go home. Alright?"

Sharon looked up at him. "Make that other woman get lost!"

"I know." David glanced at her. "I have to go now, I really do have something urgent at the office. Don’t cause a scene, okay? Just wait for me to come back."

With that, David left the room and told Mrs. Hayes that she should head back to her hometown for a while.

Mrs. Hayes snapped, "Fine, fine, I’m leaving! It’s not like I enjoy waiting on her hand and foot!"

David walked out of the apartment. A moment later, Lucy followed him. "David."

He glanced at the woman. "What do you want?"

Lucy said, "I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault Sharon is angry."

Looking at her pitiful expression, David’s heart softened a bit. "It’s not your fault," he said.

’If anyone was to blame, it was him!’

’He and she used to be very close.’

’He was the one who had abandoned her to be with Sharon.’

’They hadn’t been in contact these past few years.’

Lucy said, "I know you are where you are today because Sharon helped you. It’s great that you’re doing so well now!"

Hearing this, David said, "You saw her temper. She’s very willful, and she’s been getting more and more spoiled lately. Don’t take it to heart."

"I’ll be fine," Lucy said. "But you, on the other hand... you work so hard all day, and then you have to come home and deal with her tantrums. She’s really being rather inconsiderate."

David said to Lucy, "I have to go."

"Okay, I’ll go grab a cab." She had driven David’s car when she brought him home last night.

"I’ll give you a ride," David said.

Lucy asked, "Is that a good idea? Sharon will be angry."

"Who cares! It’s not like there’s anything going on between us."

With that, David led her to his car.

He dropped Lucy off at her home before driving to the office.

Since Mrs. Hayes had returned to her hometown, Sharon Sutton and David Hayes went out for dinner that evening.

After dinner, once they were in the car, Sharon glanced at David. "So, that Lucy Todd... what’s she doing these days?"

"I’m not sure."

"Really?"

David glanced at her. "I already told you, we just happened to run into each other at dinner last night. I honestly don’t know what she does. And in front of everyone, I couldn’t just kick her out, right? After that, I really did have too much to drink."

"You shouldn’t drink so much from now on," Sharon said. "I worry when you’re out by yourself."

"Business dinners aren’t as simple as you think," David said. "It’s not a situation where I can just refuse a drink! Sharon, I’m working myself to the bone for our family. I really cherish the opportunity your sister gave me. Can’t you be a little more understanding?"

Sharon fell silent. Sitting in the passenger seat, she glanced down at something near her feet. She picked it up and saw that it was a woman’s wallet.

She opened it and glanced inside, where she found a photograph of David. It was from high school; he had a buzz cut and looked quite handsome and clean-cut.

He was standing with Lucy Todd!

Sharon took the photo out, held it up for David to see, and asked, "What is this?"

David glanced at it. "She must have dropped it when she gave me a ride home last night."
